Chestnut Hill Sound CHS40001 GEORGE Features

So much more than your average iPod dock

You can get an iPod home dock pretty much anywhere that sells electronics these days. What makes George so much more valuable than all those other docks? For one thing, and perhaps most importantly, the sound. George was designed to reproduce studio sound quality better than all the other docks on the market. It does this through innovative speakers designed to give you professional-quality sound from your iPod dock. Another great feature is the remote. Rather than a credit-card sized clicker full of indistinguishable buttons, George's remote was created full-sized and fully-functional. Designed to work like an iPod, with scroll knob and display screen, the remote which is actually a detachable front panel, provides many features not available on any other iPod dock remote. The alarm clock offers many features not found even on products whose sole function is as an alarm clock. The AM/FM radio is designed better than many car radios, and holds more presets than most. These features all come together to form, arguably, the best home iPod dock on the market today.

Why'd you get it?

One important thing to remember when shopping for an iPod dock, is the original purpose for doing so. One of the first things you should consider when making this purchase is the iPod playback. Most home dock systems give you two or four tiny single-cone speakers which give you artificial high notes and muddy bass. Many become fuzzy if you turn them loud enough to hear from across the room. Chestnut Hill Sound wanted to fix this. That's why they brought in audio professionals to create an iPod dock which would reproduce studio recordings better. To do this, the created a 2.1 channel unit that pairs two coaxial (two-way) speakers designed to outperform highly-equalized single cone speakers with a four-inch downward pointed subwoofer to more faithfully play the original sound recording. They also designed the system to be bigger in size than a typical iPod dock (over 14 inches wide). They did this for two reasons: One, because the advanced technology inside takes up more room than the electronic systems in most, and two, so the speakers would have room to "breathe". All this combines to form the best sound from an iPod dock in the industry. But, since no micro-sound system will be perfect, if you want even better sound, use the pre-amp output to play your iPod on your home sound system through George. It just wants you to be happy . . .

Radio . . . your way

Most iPod docks include a radio simply for the marketing advantage of including a radio. The quality of the reception is substandard, and the usability features date back to the days before television. That wasn't Chestnut Hill Sound's agenda when adding radio functionality to George. To start, they designed the AM portion to be just as good as the FM, because they knew that listening to the game can be just as important as listening to the local rock block. They included an antenna port on the back so you can be sure to get the best signal possible (antenna not included). They allow you to use either the knob or the numerical buttons on the front panel/remote to search for your favorite broadcasts. Once you've found your favorite station, you can simply add it as a preset, without having to worry about running out of presets, since George allows you to store up to 24 different stations, and even lets you categorize what "page" of the remote they're on by the genre. George wants you to have radio, but not just so George can have radio; George wants you to have radio your own way.

Bigger is better . . . sometimes

In the '80s, shortly after the invention of the compact disc, the technology in remote controls was to include a miniature control for virtually any product you bought. Unfortunately, technology in remotes hasn't changed much since then. Most new CD players, radios, iPod docks and even DVD players advertise a "full function remote" on the box, but when you open the package up, you find a credit-card size remote with maybe 12 buttons, none of which you could tell apart without good lighting. George thought that was a problem, so its remote was designed not for size, but for function. Featuring a backlit screen, a scroll knob, and distinctive buttons, George's remote, which is actually a removable front panel, is designed to imitate an iPod both in screen display and in button functionality. George features several innovations, though, that even iPods don't have, including "typing" using the same method as on a cell phone, and "jump" searches so it doesn't take all day to scroll through to the music you want. And, for radio, you can organize your presets by genre. Sure, it won't fit as easily in the palm of your hand, but it's also harder to lose. So, while the trend in other technology is to go as small as you can, in this case, bigger is better.

In the interest of peace . . .

George is smart. It knows that when people are not woken up just right, they can become somewhat irritable, and that crankiness sometimes translates to aggression towards the one who woke you up. So, in its own and your best interest, George lets you choose how you want to be woken up. Whether you're taking a nap, sleeping eight hours, or just need a reminder alarm, George can help you out. It features many different modes including nap and sleep timers, dual, and one-time alarms. It allows allows you to decide whether you want a typical buzzer to break your slumber, or whether you'd rather rise to your favorite radio personality, or even a song from your iPod. What better way to greet the day than with your favorite song? Finally, George got rid of the need to choose between music at night and waking up in the morning. You can set the alarm to play louder than your ambient music so you can settle down to a soothing melody and wake up to something a little louder and more intense. So please, please don't hit George. It actually voids the one-year limited warranty . . .

A+

Little George would have been the one in iPod dock school to always be sure to put an apple on the teacher's desk. Not only is it smart out-of-the-box, it can also "learn" by updating software using the USB port on the back. Do I hear valedictorian?
