Yamaha's goal is to provide you with the features you'll need to get through present and future technological advances. It has inputs and outputs, front and back, for every component out there from your 30-year-old turntable to the latest 1080p Blu-ray or HD DVD player. And the four SCENE buttons make operating this receiver easier than ever. They are initially set to default settings for DVD Viewing, Disc Listening, TV Viewing, and Radio Listening. Pressing a SCENE button automatically launches a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button. Other SCENE settings are also available, such as iPod Listening, XM Listening, TV Sports Viewing, and Action Game Playing.

Ante Up

For the HTR6080, Yamaha has upped the HDMI ante to 1080p-compatible HDMI v1.2a. This means that not only will your HDMI-equipped components transmit crystal-clear, all-digital multichannel audio via a single cable, but that same cable will transmit a 1080p video signal from components like a PlayStation 3, HD-DVD or Blu-ray player, to your 1080p HDTV. Plus, HDMI v1.2a supports Super Audio CDs. This Yamaha receiver is equipped with high definition video upconversion circuitry that takes 480i/p signals up to 720p or 1080i resolution. A deinterlacer converts 480i signals to progressive scan 480p through the HDMI output.

Not Your Ordinary Digital Signal Processing

Using CINEMA DSP LSI 64-bit floating point quantization technology (pay attention, there'll be a test later), the HTR6080 brings the most out of your music and movies. Conventional multichannel systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using relatively simple matrix and steering techniques to create surround sound effects. Yamaha's CINEMA DSP technology is much more sophisticated. It naturally decodes the Dolby Digital and DTS movie sound formats, but also draws on a huge memory of real-world data from actual venues (especially for the music programs) and input from movie sound technicians. This data is stored and processed on Yamaha-developed LSIs, the most powerful audio chips in the world. One of the main advantages of CINEMA DSP is the large choice of sound field programs available--17 to be exact. The basic program for movies is Enhanced, which greatly improves the sound of surround fields. The most expansive of these sound fields is Spectacle, which recreates the open feeling of large-scale, epic motion pictures. The Sci-Fi, Adventure, and General programs provide the optimum sound fields for those movie genres.

Connections Galore

The HTR6080 offers 2 in/1 out 1080p/SACD compatible HDMI v1.2a switching, providing the most advanced method of delivering high quality video signals to a home theater system to enable the reproduction of DVD and satellite TV sources with HD quality. Compatible with the HDMI v1.1 format, it can also decode digital audio signals from sources such as DVD-Audio, CD, Dolby Digital, and DTS. With optical and coaxial digital audio inputs, this receiver accommodates digital sources such as DVD, CD, MC/CDR, and D-TV/CBL. Optical digital outputs assure the finest possible signal travels from the HTR6080 to your optical-compatible components. The receiver incorporates component video inputs, providing outstanding video connections. You also get S-Video inputs and outputs. In addition to the wide range of inputs and outputs, the HTR-6090 also includes a set of front panel A/V inputs for temporary connections.

Some other major features on the Yamaha HTR6080 include 7-channel discrete amplification (120 W x 7), Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, 17 surround programs, SILENT CINEMA, and a preprogrammed learning remote control. It delivers high power to seven channels and features Yamaha's finely tuned CINEMA DSP. The HTR6080's vitally important digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are extremely high performance Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit type, one for each. They perform accurate sound field reproduction for high quality multichannel sources, and for two-channel stereo, provide outstanding separation and precise musical delineation. On top of all this, the HTR6080 utilizes Pure Direct signal bypass for high quality two-channel and multichannel surround reproduction.

The optional YDS-10 Universal Dock (not included) lets you connect your iPod to this receiver. You can listen to your iPod music and watch iPod images and movies on your monitor via the receiver. You can operate your iPod via the receiver's remote unit with the On-Screen Display and also charge your iPod. The dock works with iPod, iPod mini, and iPod nano. Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

Room Calibration--Look, No Hands!

The YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer--don't forget about that test) system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones that are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the sound pressure level until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. And you don't have to do anything! The HTR6080 has an improved system that is faster (less than three minutes), also adjusts frequency response, and provides three programed EQ patterns, plus the ability to manually adjust parametric EQ settings. Six YPAO settings can be held in memory and recalled via two system memory buttons on the remote control.

Extraterrestrial Radio

Yamaha's HTR6080 makes it easy for you to bring XM Satellite Radio into your home. XM delivers over 170 channels of music (including 69 commercial-free channels), news, sports, talk, comedy, and children's programming. There are even select channels broadcasting in XM-HD Surround 5.1-channel audio. To hear XM you'll need the optional XM Mini-Tuner and XM Mini-Tuner Home Dock, or the older XM Connect & Play tuner/antenna (none of which is included). You also have to subscribe for XM service, subscription and activation fees apply (subscriptions not included).
