Pioneer DV-48AV Features

This just in! — Elevate your DVD experience

February 19, 2008 may have spelled the end for HD DVD — on that day, Toshiba announced that it would no longer develop, manufacturer, or market this hi-def video format — but it's not the end for HD DVD players. In fact, it's a new day for your DVD library. While you can enjoy any HD DVD titles released before this announcement, you can also see your standard DVDs like never before with an HD DVD player. How, you might ask? One word: upconversion. Your DVD collection delivers lower-resolution (480i) video content while your huge flat-panel HDTV is capable of displaying a high-definition 1080i or 1080p resolution. Video upconversion enhances lower-resolution video content, by means of a technique known as interpolation, so that it displays at high-definition on your HDTV. So, investing in a DV-48AV HD DVD player means investing in better performance from the media you already have.

Best of both worlds

Pioneer's DV48AV offers you today's most spectacular audio and video formats. It plays DVD-Audio (DVD-A) and Super Audio CD (SACD), which represent the highest level of audio on disc. The recordings are bigger, more detailed, and more open, and they're here now. A DVD-A disc holds 4.7 GBs of data, seven times that of a regular CD. This massive capacity allows it to reproduce all of the music intended by the artist, without the limitations of a normal CD. The warmth of a DVD-A recording is reminiscent of the sound from vintage vinyl albums. Audio on a DVD-A can be formatted into two channels (stereo) at a 192 kHz, 24-bit rate, creating a full surround field that swirls around you. SACDs also deliver exceptionally detailed sound with the warmth of analog recordings. They hold about 4 GBs of data and currently come in three types (all three can be played in the DV48AV). Single-Layer discs have one layer of high-density data dedicated to either very high-resolution stereo (two-channel) or multi-channel music. Dual-Layer discs give you even more great music. And Hybrid Discs consist of two layers, but one is for high-density SACD music, the other for regular CD audio. The CD audio layer is the only type of SACD audio that can be played on a regular CD player. So you can play the high-density layer in your SACD-compatible home player, and the CD layer in your car or portable CD player. The DV48AV doesn't stop at playing the pristine audio of SACD and DVD-Audio. It will also play CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs and DVD-RWs. On these various types of CDs and DVDs, you can play MP3/WMA audio files, and DivX/JPEG video files.

Looking good

Pioneer's PureCinema progressive scan technology makes for smoother images, removing much of the stair-stepping of diagonal lines and making video look considerably more like film. Pioneer's progressive scan 2:3 technology detects when the material was originally shot on film and instantly recreates each individual frame to yield a more film-like presentation. Video processing is handled by a 108 MHz/12-bit digital-to-analog converter and video input signals can be upconverted to 1080i resolution through an HDMI output for maximim impact on HDTV displays.

Sound processing

For reproducing terrific sound, Pioneer went big by using a Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog (DAC) converter. Burr Brown is well known in the A/V industry for outstanding DAC performance. The addition of bass management lets you control the amount of bass sent to your speakers for better multichannel sound with your DVD-Audio and SACD recordings. Some early universal players didn't offer bass management for SACD, defeating many of the audio advantages of SACD. The DV48AV keeps the signal pure and in control for both formats, no matter what size speakers you have.

Connections

The DV48AV provides a variety of options for connecting your home entertainment components. There's an HDMI output for all-digital, uncompressed, single-wire connection to your HDTV. For other video outputs, you'll find component, S-video, and composite connections. On the audio side, you get gold plated optical and coaxial digital outputs for high quality sound transfer, along with an analog output. And for the all-important 5.1 audio playback, there are six analog outputs.

Keeping it under control

The remote control that comes with your DV48AV has a jog dial that allows you to fast/slow forward or reverse to see your favorite scenes over and over again. A joystick-type control lets you navigate DVD menus and the OSD (on screen display) of the player. The buttons are intuitively laid out on the remote and they glow in the dark. The OSD has nearly all of the set-up configuration functionality of the player, so the remote doesn't have a lot of buttons for setup options. It's a must to use the OSD prior to listening to SACD or DVD-A discs because you have to change two settings to play these types of discs.
