On February 17, 2009, federal law requires that all full-power television broadcast stations stop broadcasting in analog
format and broadcast only in digital format.
Why the switch to digital?
Digital is a more efficient way to broadcast.
Digital will free up the airwaves for other services, including public safety.
Digital provides clearer pictures, more channels, and some free, over-the-air high definition content for consumers with HDTV sets.
How do consumers make the switch to digital TV?
Purchase a Digital HDTV with built-in digital tuner:
All HDTVs with a digital tuner are able to receive digital signals broadcast by television stations.
Purchase a DTV converter box:
You can purchase a DTV converter box that enables standard-definition broadcast television reception on an analog TV. The federal government is also offering consumers $40 coupons to go towards the purchase of these boxes. (For more information on the coupon visit

Subscribe to a video service provider:
Subscribe to paid cable, satellite, or a telephone company video-service provider to continue using analog TV sets. Or get an HD package from your provider if you own an HDTV.
