Smooth sports, seamless action . . . Motionflow 120Hz
Okay, sure, you're going to enjoy watching the evening news or TV dramas in life-size HD on a big-screen flat panel HDTV. But let's be honest, in your quest to achieve the theater experience in your living room, you're really interested in watching something else. Something with a little more suspense. More intensity. More brawn. In other words, the latest action movie release or this weekend's big sports game. There's a problem, however. You see, not all HDTVs can deliver sports and action movies with the same lifelike grandeur you're looking for. As it happens, most TVs are designed to reproduce video at 60 frames-per-second; that is, they flash 60 images per second on the screen to create the illusion of motion. Filmed at 30fps, television programming can be easily accommodated by 60fps (or Hz) televisions . . . each frame is simply doubled to match the 60fps. However, most movies are filmed at 24fps, which doesn't divide easily into sixty. Accordingly, 60Hz HDTVs must subject 24fps movies to complicated video processing that often causes a stuttery and jerky picture. The Sony KDL-40EX500, however, does something else entirely. It looks to advanced Motionflow 120Hz technology. Capable of playing video back at 120fps — a multiple of both 30 and 24 — Motionflow 120Hz seamlessly reproduces both TV and film content. As a result, you experience smooth, fluid, lifelike motion, even when watching fast-paced action and sports programming.
Ga-ga for Green
These days, energy efficiency and environmental health are important concerns. Not only do you want to keep utility expenses at a minimum, but you are also interested in protecting Mother Nature. As it happens, the folks at Sony share your concerns. Demonstrating Sony's "green" zeal, the KDL-40EX500 sports a variety of energy- and environment-conscious design features. First, LightSensor technology monitors ambient-light levels in your viewing area and automatically adjusts backlight intensity. Not only is image clarity optimized, but power use is minimized when light levels are low. Second, responding to the video content you're watching, the KDL-40EX500's Dynamic Backlight Control also makes automatic energy-saving and performance-raising adjustments to backlight intensity. Third, this BRAVIA TV's packaging and printed materials are made using between 20% and 40% recycled materials. Finally, all these "green" features add up to earn an ENERGY STAR qualification, signaling that this LCD HDTV satisfies the U.S. government's strict criteria for energy-efficient operation. Because it's ga-ga for green, the KDL-40EX500 helps you save money and the conserve natural resources.
Bring on the HD
There's good reason to be excited: the Sony BRAVIA KDL-40EX500 LCD HDTV sports a Full HD 1920 x 1080p display resolution. In case you're not familiar with "1080p", as it's fondly known, that's the highest definition panel resolution currently available, and an ideal complement to HD movies on Blu-ray Disc, HD television programming, and HD gaming from sources like the PlayStation3. Of course, because this is a BRAVIA television, when it comes to the Sony Full HD experience, panel resolution is merely the beginning. First, Sony's BRAVIA Engine 2 technology offers a fully digital video processor that employs a collection of unique algorithms to significantly reduce video "noise" and produce sharp, vibrant, lifelike images through which a 1080p-resolution panel reaches its full potential. Second, the KDL-40EX500's Advanced Contrast Enhancer reproduces improved contrast for deep blacks in darker scenes and fine detail in shadows, revealing all the details that the director intended for you to see. Third, an Ambient Sensor automatically adjusts picture color based on lighting conditions in your viewing area, delivering a picture that's tailored to your living room. Finally, Sony's 24p True Cinema technology ensures compatibility with and high-fidelity reproduction of 24fps film-based content. Bring on the HD.
It's all about connections
Today's home A/V components aren't meant to work alone. Rather, they're intended to integrate with each other, allowing for a seamless, interconnected home theater experience. And when it comes to connections, the KDL-40EX500 does not disappoint. Heading the list of A/V connections, of course, are this BRAVIA LCD's four HDMI inputs. As the only single-cable HD audio and video interface, HDMI offers optimal connectivity to HD sources like Blu-ray Disc players, HD satellites, and HD gaming consoles. Next, a rear-panel PC input allows you to convert the KDL-40EX500's LCD screen into a giant, 40" computer monitor. Last, but not least, is the KDL-40EX500's side USB port. Quickly connect to a thumbdrive, your laptop, or a portable audio player, and access video, photos, and music using this BRAVIA HDTV.
Ah, BRAVIA
As a leader in products with HDMI connectivity, Sony has created BRAVIA Sync technology to go beyond simple audio and video transmission. When you combine your new KDL-40EX500 with a select number of other BRAVIA audio and video products, control functions will also be transmitted via the HDMI cable. With "One Touch Play", operations that took several steps are reduced to one. Press the PLAY button on the remote, watch the audio and/or the video component(s) turn on then the BRAVIA KDL-40EX500 television will turn on and switch to the correct video input...Simple...Easy...BRAVIA Sync.
Your HD lifeline
High Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI, is the only home A/V connection that allows for both Full HD 1080p video and 7.1-channel studio-quality audio to be passes along a single cable. In other words, in order to take full advantage of your home theater's high definition potential, you need to HDMI cabling to link HD-capable components. It's only natural that you might have questions regarding how best to outfit your personal HD system. Vann's sales representatives are here to explain all of your options. I would recommend this tv to anyone interested in a tv that is reasonably priced and doesnt use the led. Many led seem to have not great picture quality on the edges.

Excellent picture and very easy to set up. The only con is that the sound does not match the quality of the picture. You have the ability to make sound adjustments, which I did, but the sound is just OK. I ended up getting a Sony sound bar which really improves the sound. Over all a great TV for the money!

Their sales person, Montana Cole, has directed me to the best option for the situation I was trying to satisfy. This Sony TV is very easy to set up, has great options and control and the picture is miles ahead of teh competition. Vanns is the place to buy Sony is the way to go! I can hardly believe I got it for the sale price they had listed...fantastic.

The TV had a problem with the HMDI ports. It would not accept the new Sony Blue Ray player in input 2 and 4. I called Sony and they had me check the # of the software package in the TV. They quickly advised they would send a new flashdrive softeware update. I complained that the TV was new and Id only had it a couple of days. Sony said the problem wasnt just my set and assured me the software update would fix the problem. I got the flashdrive and instatlled it. The problem seems to be fixed. The picture is great and all seems right with he world at this time.

Now that we have LED, contrast ratios in the millions to one, internet functionality, and loads of other advanced bells and whistles, youd think a standard mid-level LCD would be somewhat underwhelming. Wrong.
I didnt have high hopes for the KDL40EX500. I sell this stuff for a living, so Im constantly around the best and brightest that tv manufacturers have to offer. I read as many reviews of the Sony KDL40EX500 as I could find. Most were extremely positive. I attributed the gushing reviews to folks too inexperienced to know the difference, or just so too new to HD to be able to see the shortcomings of their recent purchase.
Ladies and gentlemen... I am now eating my words. Since Ive gotten the tv, I couldnt be more impressed with it. Normally, the first thing I do is spend forever altering the picture settings to get the best possible image. However, I had to do little with the factory settings. A few modifications and it was good to go.
I dont particularly like the ambient sensor. It never seems to adjust the picture to my liking, so I usually have it off. Same goes for Motion-flow. It looks fine with tv programming, but I prefer to have it turned off when watching movies. The original cadence of film looks far more cinematic. Thanks to the matte screen, you dont have to worry about glare when watching tv during the day. Although, when viewing in total darkness, the black levels are merely dark gray. Add a smidgen of ambient light and the problem goes away, though.
For the most part, blacks are inky and life-like. Colors, vibrant. Motion, smooth as silk. DVDs look good, but to get the most out of the tv, you should really be playing blu-ray discs. The opening scene of the Dark Knight shot using IMAX cameras looks particularly incredible.
Is it LED? No. But it carries a far less hefty price-tag, too. As long as you dont watch tv in total darkness and you dont care for 3D and internet widgets, this tv is a great buy. Hope this helps.

Before I buy electronics or some other products I do my homework and check for brand, reliability, price, reputation, sellers price and BBB reports.
I am very satisfied with the performance of thisTV sound, design, performance, price, features.picture quality, and number of inputs.
I am also satisfied with the service that Vanns provided, my only concern was the packaging used to shipped it plastic airbags around original box creating a sandwich between the original box and shipping box. Most of them had lost the air wich make them innefective in protecting the TV,even so there was no damage suffered by the TV.

I had been doing research for 2 months hoping to find a 2009 model on clearance during the February-March mark-down period. I walked into HH Gregg after checking and double-checking every other electronics store in my area and found this Sony KDL-40EX500 on sale for $719. I assumed it was a close-out model and hesitated because I was not able to find much review information for this product online. Little did I know this was a brand new 2010 model, I have no idea why HH Gregg had it on sale for $719. The day I went back to the store they were offering an additional $50 off all HDTVs 40 and larger so my grand total came to $670! Needless to say, I was already super excited.
When I brought the TV home I hooked it up to my regular DVR not HD. The picture left something to be desired so the next day I picked up an HD DVR from our local cable office along with 3 $19 HDMI cables from Walmart. 1-HDDVR, 1-XBox360, 1-Sony BlueRay Player
When I got everything hooked up I was totally BLOWN AWAY with the picture quality of this TV. HD channels look amazing and XBox looks CRAZY good. As good as those 2 things looked the Blue Ray player surpassed them both. Blue Ray looks AWESOME on this TV. The 120hz motionflow looks so realistic. The bright colors jump off the screen and you can see every detail of the black colors.
The only thing that is slightly less than amazing is the sound. Sometimes I have to turn up the volume very loud to hear the dialog in movies but admittedly I have not figured out all the correct sound settings yet.
All in all this TV is an absolute beast, I love the quality and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a mid-size HDTV at an affordable price. You wont be disappointed!
