The ultimate Rebel
Canon is known to produce some of the best cameras in the industry, period. Their EOS digital SLRs are considered by many to be the best of the best. But, for a time, the EOS series was a professionals-only lineup. Then, another generation came along. And, as children will, the new EOS refused to follow the protocols established by the cameras before them, earning them the "Rebel" name. These included the XT, XTi, and XSi. Now, there's another brother, even less conforming than its siblings. Sure, the EOS Rebel XS bears the unbeatable quality of its ancestors. But, the XS shuns the elitism of it predecessors, choosing instead to be a hero of the common people, an established leader in quality consumer cameras. It's smaller and lighter than any previous EOS model, less expensive than nearly all of Canon's SLRs, but still extremely full-featured. Say hello to the Canon EOS Rebel XS digital SLR.
Dynamic doesn't even begin to describe this duo . . .
Some pairs throughout history were just meant to be, like Romeo and Juliet, Bonnie and Clyde, or Lewis and Clark. But one duo surpasses them all: the CMOS sensor and DIGIC III processor of the Canon XS. Canon's 10.1-megapixel CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers the most pixels in its class. It offers many of the same new technologies first seen in Canon's professional EOS-1D Mark III (a $4500 camera) to maximize each pixel's light gathering efficiency. It's an APS-C size sensor (22.2 x 14.8mm), and there's an effective 1.6x increase in the lens's marked focal length when attached. The EOS Rebel XS's DIGIC III Image Processor works hand in hand with Canon's CMOS sensor to achieve even higher levels of performance. The entire electronic system is totally redesigned, giving the camera its incredible combination of speed and image quality. Digital noise is significantly reduced in shadow areas, and color reproduction is superior. It's safe to say Batman and Robin have nothing on the bond between this duo.
Color by Canon
The EOS Rebel XS's Auto Lighting Optimizer is yet another image-quality tool that comes to the rescue in tricky lighting conditions. It can actually lighten dark areas of a scene while ensuring that bright areas maintain tonal detail. In addition, it can increase contrast in "flat" lighting, such as overcast days. Its now available in all shooting modes, including P, Tv, Av, and Manual. But, maybe you're looking for a specific effect with your picture, and want the control to accomplish that effect without going through Photoshop. Well, with the EOS Rebel XS's Picture Style technology, photographers can change the look of their digital photographs. Color, saturation, sharpness and contrast settings create noticeable variation in the saved image. Changing a Picture Style setting is almost like a 35mm film user switching from one type of color film to another. In addition to six preset Picture Style settings, Canon offers additional downloadable 'Picture Style Files' that can be installed into your camera for even more imaging options at your fingertips.
Focus on this . . .
With an old camera, it was hard to get two people or two objects in focus at the same time. Not only does the EOS allow this, it does you 5 better: 7 focus points. The EOS Rebel XS features a high-speed, wide area 7-point AF system. It can focus using One-Shot AF mode, AI Focus AF, AI Servo AF and Manual. The center, cross-type focus point operates flawlessly in lower-light and lower-contrast settings. In Live View Function, the EOS Rebel XS can focus manually, with 5x or 10x magnification for focusing clarity.
Life doesn't wait for the photographer
If you've ever tried to snap photos at any event where people were moving, or even just milling around, you probably know how tough it is, and have probably realized that life rarely slows down so you can get a good picture. Well, what if it didn't have to? The EOS Rebel XS operates with such effortless speed that operation is nothing short of intuitive. With instant startup times, speedy autofocus and minimal shutter lag, the EOS Rebel XS is one of the fastest cameras available today. It can even shoot up to 3.0 fps (frames per second), in bursts of up to 514 JPEGs or 5 RAW files, so you'll never, ever miss a shot.
Kinda like Santa
The Live View LCD screen on the XS lets you see everything that's going on, at least in your picture. The EOS Rebel XS has a bright 2.5-inch TFT LCD monitor with 230,000 pixels and a viewing angle of 170. Its perfect for Live View composition or viewing camera settings like AF, ISO, Metering, AF Point selection and flash options. And the maximum brightness of the EOS Rebel XS's LCD monitor is about 30 greater than its predecessor, which is a big benefit when you're using the camera in bright sunlight. Live View Function enables you to view your subjects directly on the 2.5-inch LCD monitor. It's easy to magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus. And now, there are two ways to use Autofocus along with Live View Function in the EOS Rebel XS. You can even choose a grid overlay, perfect for keeping lines in your subject straight in your pictures. In the studio, Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through the EOS Rebel XS's USB connection, and the included EOS Utility software. You can even see everything remotely! However, what you put on your list is up to you.
Self-clean
Photographers who must change lenses in dusty environments will find the advanced Canon EOS Integrated Cleaning System a tremendous time saver. Dust that settles on the sensor surface is removed using ultrasonic vibration. This Self Cleaning Sensor Unit routine is automatically activated whenever the camera is powered on or off. (It can also be manually activated.) A special collar positioned around the sensor collects the loosened dust. Dust particles can also be automatically removed via software. By shooting a plain white subject, the photographer can acquire dust position data that is transmitted along with the image (whether JPEG or RAW). Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) version 3.3 or later software can be used to manually or automatically erase the dust spots. It's not one feature, it's a built-in system to minimize the effect of dust in high-resolution digital images.
Miniature size, maximum features
Measuring 4.96" x 3.8" x 2.4" and weighing in at under 16 oz., the EOS Rebel XS is indeed the smallest digital Rebel ever produced. Its lightweight and compact design does not, however, leave out controls and displays one would expect from an EOS Digital camera. The EOS Rebel XS has the full array of buttons and controls found on the Rebel XSi, plus a 2.5-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD monitor, which is perfect for composing in Live View mode, or reviewing photos already recorded onto the camera's SD/SDHC memory card.
Don't forget the memory!
Compact, inexpensive and available in increasingly large capacities, SD and SDHC memory cards are a perfect complement to the EOS Rebel XS's compact and lightweight body design. For a variety of memory cards, search "SD" at www.vanns.com

I purchased this camera to replace a smaller 7.1 megpix. sony. I have two young children and I wanted to have a camera to capture all of those special priceless moments as they grow up. I have been using this camera now for three weeks and am very pleased with every aspect and feature. It is small enough to tote around in a small DSLR bag and the size of the camera is perfect for my hand. The button locations are well thought out and easy to learn. I was surprised at how long the battery actually lasts. I have had the camera now for three weeks and have not had to charge the battery. Ive taken over 600 pictures. That is way better than my older Sony. Most importantly this camera takes excellent pictures. I am very pleased with the speed of the camera and the incredible quality and detail in each picture.
This camera is truly a gem. I would recomend this camera to anyone who is looking for a very very good camera at a reasonable price.
Vanns, as always is quick to ship and does a great job safely packaging their products for shipping.

My husband and I could not be happier with this camera. We immediately purchased the 300mm lens and went on a camping trip. We were able to take great photos of wild life and natural scenery. When we got home we put the pictures on our computer and were really blown away. This camera takes GREAT pictures! The color and detail is really amazing! It is very easy to set up and use even for a simple girl like myself. Highly recommend!

I have been into photography for about a year now and have been using this camera for many different types of shots. This camera is one of the best entry line cameras Ive seen, I would recommend this camera for any beginner to intermediate photographer, especially because of the low price and great quality pictures this camera takes. The only fault I found with this camera for a beginner is all the different settings and features were not so simple, therefore I would recommend going through the manual pretty thoroughly before using the camera. Having these advanced features however, do let you expand your capabilities as you learn new things. I also highly recommend buying from Vanns becouase they do great business for a great price.
