For the first time ever, you can record high-definition 1080i video directly to a hard disk drive with the HDR-SR1 Handycam camcorder. The closet filmmaker in you is off the leash now. No more half hour "short shorts" in your future, you have the power to capture up to four hours of HD content on this Sony's 30GB built-in hard disk drive. That's like half of ROOTS, my friend. Not wanting to trap you in a high tech corner, the HDR-SR1's dual HD/SD format allows you to record in standard definition as well - for those moments when serious length of recording time matters more than higher definition. You will also be able to freeze time in flawless detail with a 4.0 megapixel still capture feature, recordable to hard disk drive or optional Memory Stick Duo Media. A 10x optical zoom backed by a 80x digital zoom allow the professional-quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens to capture every detail of every moment. Boasting a generous 3.5" Wide (16:9) Hybrid Touch Panel Clear Photo LCD screen and multiple connectivity options, including USB 2.0 and HDMI outputs, the HDR-SR1 gives you complete control from capture to cut.

Clearly designed with the most exacting home theater aficionados in mind, the HDR-SR1 records in Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround sound using its built-in microphone. Now you'll experience your home movies with a symphony of sound coming from all directions, the way you experienced them while recording. So whether you're recording proof of the local ivory-billed woodpecker long thought extinct in your neck of the woods, or your child's first steps, you're going to get every last sound, large and small -- from the tapping of a beak into a dying hardwood, to the tap of tiny feet on your hardwood floors. AVCHD

AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) is a new high definition recording format introduced by Sony and Panasonic. It can use various storage media, including 3" recordable DVD discs, hard disk drives, and SD and Memory Stick Pro memory cards. It is being positioned to compete with handheld video camera recording formats like HDV and MiniDV. It is designed to stomp those competing formats into the dust. As its name implies, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video compression format is used. This is touted as a more efficient compression scheme when compared to the MPEG-2 compression used in HDV camcorders, potentially offering both reduced storage requirements and better video quality. Audio can be encoded in 5.1 AC-3 or 7.1 linear PCM. The transport stream used is MPEG-2. Among the touted advantages of AVCHD over MiniDV tapes is true random-access, since time-based seeking on AVCHD does not involve a fast-forward/rewind operation as it would on tape-based formats such as miniDV. AVCHD is expected to be playable in Blu-ray Disc players and possibly the Playstation 3.

When matched with a compatible component, this single interconnecting cable combines: multi-channel audio, uncompressed digital video, intercommunication between devices, and simple control protocols. This single cable connection ensures that all signals remain in their pure digital form and secure by use of High Definition Copy Protection (HDCP) regardless of signal output resolution.
