Multi-sensory immersion . . . all in one place
Under normal circumstances, in order to achieve a truly immersive home theater experience — i.e. one that includes both video and audio — you need a 3D HDTV and a multi-channel surround sound speaker system. Well, given that we have before us the leading series in Mitsubishi's 2010 DLP HDTV lineup, it's safe to say that we aren't dealing with "normal circumstances". When it comes to their Diamond line, Mitsubishi pulls all the stops. Point in case, not only does this expansive 73" Full HD television support 3D viewing, but it also envelops you in a multi-channel surround sound experience. While most HDTVs offer two built-in speakers that do little more than allow you to hear the soundtrack accompanying your favorite movie, the WD-73838 features an integrated 16-speaker audio system! Further, working in conjunction with built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound processing and innovative audio-reproduction technology, the WD-73838 fills your living room with immersive virtual surround sound audio. For a multi-sensory, immersive home theater experience from a single source, turn to the WD-73838 from Mitsubishi.
Ideal for 3D — the speed of Mitsubishi DLP
Well, it looks like the rest of the A/V world is finally catching up with the folks at Mitsubishi. This year — 2010 — marks the official start of the 3D Revolution. Multiple manufacturers are now producing 3D-capable HDTVs, and 3D movies are premiering in theaters and homes. And, naturally, Mitsubishi has several lines of 3D rear-projection DLP HDTVs to add to the movement . . . but seeing as how Mitsubishi has been producing 3D HDTVs for the home enthusiast since 2007, this isn't much of a surprise. Something else that isn't too surprising: Mitsubishi does 3D spectacularly, with power and finesse. You see, one of the historic limitations to 3D viewing at home involves the rate at which a video display could show individual frames on the screen. Today's Alternate Frame Sequencing 3D technology uses the same principles upon which human sight is based to achieve a virtual 3D effect. Because our two eyes are slightly off set, each sees a given object or scene from a slightly different angle. When our brains combine the two images, we are able to perceive depth, in addition to height and width . . . in other words: 3D. Modern 3D movies are filmed using a camera with two lenses set slightly apart. In effect, two versions of a movie are created simultaneously, and are combined in the studio by shuffling together single frames from each, one after the other. Then, when these play back on your TV screen, your special 3D active-shutter glasses alternately block out each lens at super high speeds in coordination with the frames flashing on the screen. Each eye sees only that version of the movie intended for that eye, your brain processes the images as normal, and ta-da! . . . 3D at home. Because of the high frame-rate speeds required by this technology, only recently have slower technologies like LCD been able to achieve this level of performance. However, because DLP technology is inherently 1,000-times faster than LCD, Mitsubishi has been able to build high-performance 3D panels for years. Discover 3D from experts &mdash the 3D-capable WD-73838 from Mitsubishi. (Note: Separate 3D glasses are required for 3D viewing.)
It's not witchcraft . . . it's VUDU (online streaming!)
If there's any rival to the 3D home theater revolution, it's the emergence of online streaming directly to your HDTV. And entering the arena with ferocity, Mitsubishi presents StreamTV Internet Media technology featuring VUDU Apps. Simply connect the WD-73838 to your pre-existing broadband internet service using this HDTV's built-in ethernet port, and you can begin streaming a diverse offering of online content directly into your home theater. Lose yourself in one of the 3,000+ HD movies available via VUDU Movies. Listen to a custom internet radio station with Pandora. Browse photo albums on Picasa or Flickr. Stay informed via news from sources like The New York Times, the Associated Press, or NBC Nightly News. You can even enjoy popular video podcasts on Revision3 and DiggNation. Finally, integrated Bluetooth wireless technology lets you access digital music stored on other Bluetooth-capable devices. StreamTV with VUDU Apps may not be witchcraft, but it sure feels like magic.
DLP . . . as only Mitsubishi knows how
Across the board, Mitsubishi rear-projection DLP HDTVs are for video enthusiasts who want a true home theater experience . . . big, brilliant, and detailed pictures. As the pinnacle of Mitsubishi DLP, 838-series DLPs are for those videophiles who seek advanced home theater, customized to their specific viewing preferences. As far as "big, brilliant, and detailed" goes, the WD-738378's 73" DLP screen and full HD 1920 x 1080p resolution are just the beginning. PerfectTint and Dark Detailer technologies combine with PerfectColor and Deep Color/x.v.Color support to serve up a vivid, life-like level of detail and color. For a video experience customized to your personal tastes, the WD-73838 offers ISF ccc Advanced Calibration. Further, while an integrated USB media port makes it possible to attach USB flash-memory devices for viewing of your latest digital photos, a fourth HDMI input expands your HD connectivity options. Finally, an ENERGY STAR 4.0 qualification highlights that this DLP HDTV meets strict U.S. government criteria for energy efficiency, both in standby mode and in operation.
Smooth, Plush 1080p video performance
Mitsubishi doesn't classify its DLP rear-projection TVs as "HDTVs". Oh, no, they're nothing less than " Home Theater Televisions". This seems an accurate description. Because the Mitsubishi WD-73838 uses DLP display technology, it is able to bring you a vast 73" viewing area that undeniably evokes the presence of a movie theater screen in your living room. But you want more than just an epically sized screen — you want stunning high definition video reproduced with the smoothness of natural motion. The WD-73838 delivers both. First, because some HD content is formatted at 720p or 1080i levels, the WD-73838 uses Plush1080p technology to optimize all HD source material for display on a 1080p-resolution screen. Second, Mitsubishi's Smooth 120Hz video processing dramatically improves the smoothness of transitions between frames for enhanced realism of motion, especially during fast-action sports or movie sequences.
Fact: you just can't have too much color
If you thought Technicolor was out of this world, you might want to sit down for this. The WD-73838 is capable of displaying . . . billions of colors. What's more, special features designed into the WD-73838 give you the control to customize these colors for optimal, lifelike video reproduction. Okay, now, what's this business about billions of colors? Well, the tag team of x.v.Color and Deep Color allows the WD-73838's screen to display such a large number of colors by expanding the supported color gamut (the work of x.v.Color) and by broadening the color spectrum used to represent the graphical image data being sent to your screen (thank you, Deep Color). Further, Deep Color allows for smooth transitions between color shades, thus eliminating color banding and other visual artifacts for a sharper, more lifelike image. Additionally, a 6-color processor enhances the WD-73838's color capacity by producing brighter colors, a wider range of colors, and whiter whites. Finally, giving you the control to customize the image you see, the WD-73838 offers PerfectColor. A full color matrix, this technology lets you adjust the intensity of six separate colors independently of each other and separately for each of the TV's inputs. You get the color you want for all your video sources.
Less "noise" means better video
The WD-73838's exclusive Video Noise Reduction uses advanced algorithms to better identify video noise from fine detail and correct the signal rather than distort it. Video noise is caused by distortions in the video signal that make the picture look grainy or snowy. As signal resolutions improve with the introduction of DVD, digital cable/ satellite and HDTV, the loss of sharpness produced by most noise reduction circuits becomes more noticeable. Mitsubishi's advanced Video Noise Reduction delivers signal correction that provides an image that is crystal clear and extraordinarily detailed.
An HDTV for all occasions
Because you don't plan on using your new high definition WD-73838 to enjoy just one type of video, and because you might find yourself watching it at various times of day, Mitsubishi has designed this DLP with four video modes, letting you customize the TV's performance. Choose between Gaming Mode and Natural Mode when switching between graphical video game images and live-action movies and television programs. If you're sitting down to a matinee, use Brilliant and Bright modes to optimize panel performance in situations with high ambient light.
HDMIncredible
Bringing you the absolute best in connectivity, Mitsubishi's WD-73838 features four HDMI connections. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080i and even 1080p. Your incoming media content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, and with that in mind, HDMI systems automatically configure to display that content in the most effective format. Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device. No more complicated cable set-up when installing your home theater system, and no more ugly cable mess behind your components. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on this single cable. Also, HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI. (Please note that a physical adapter, sold separately, is needed to make the conversion from HDMI to DVI.)
Your HD lifeline
High Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI, is the only home A/V connection that allows for both Full HD 1080p video and 7.1-channel studio-quality audio to be passes along a single cable. In other words, in order to take full advantage of your home theater's high definition potential, you need to HDMI cabling to link HD-capable components. It's only natural that you might have questions regarding how best to outfit your personal HD system. Vann's sales representatives are here to explain all of your options. I researched HDTVs for over 6 months and finally narrowed it down to this model. I probably waited 4 months until I saw the price drop. Vanns was without question the best price so I finally took the plunge. This tv is unreal. I know everyone says plasma is better, but I could not find a difference. Ive owned this tv for about a month now and have not one complaint. Ive watched more tv in the past month than I have in all of 2010. March Madness in HD on this set is unreal. My kids watch Disney DVDs on it and they actually sit still in amazement. This tv met every expectation I had and exceeded all of them. If there is a better television out there in this size range and price range, you call me up and tell me - cause this tv is a dream.

We purchased a 70 Sony QUALIA at a very deep discount at Vanns three years ago---a real beauty of an HD experience---however, it developed an unrepairable flaw in the sockets and thanks to our purchase of an extended warranty, Vanns replaced it with the BEST HDTV 3D set available on the market today. The sound system is such an improvement over the SONY that we were able to disconnect all the external speakers and the amplifier for an easier, better audio performance. Going Green, Saving $$$, Saving power 247. The QUALIA was known for its picture and I was sorry to see the SONY limp out the door and dreading the replacements picture quality---until I turned it on WOW! Our first large screen was a MItsubishi rear view projection and it lasted through 2 moves and over a decade of trouble free performance. We donated it to a local charity and its are still going strong after 15 years! Each of our three children purchased one as well and their Mitsubishi rear projections have been trouble free for years and years and years. So, if you want a reason to purchase a TV every few years, get a different brand, because your Mitsubishi will be serving you for a very, very long time. My 3D glasses are charged, so Ive gotta run to see what all the shouting is about. Enjoy!

Mitsubishi may make wonderful products but, the 73 inch TV I got wasnt one of them. It had internal shorts that blew-out my cable box, some of the hook-up instructions were totally wrong, and the side RCA jacks were loose. The customer support staff speaks poor English over third rate telephone lines and they, apparently, only follow diagnostic flow charts instead of having much understanding of the product.
The unit was returned to Vanns.

This is the second DLP TV for me and could not be more pleased. The picture on this TV is amazing. HD TV is great and Blue-ray is even better. The size is something that will keep me from going to the cinema for most movies. The set up is easy even with having a 6 color processor and being able to adjust each color separately. Internet connectivity is simple, ethernet cable or wireless adaptor and the TV does the rest. Sound from the TVs speakers is really good but you will want to invest in a sub woofer. I hope Mitsubishi will continue to make DLPs for a long time because I would like to buy nothing but and will continue to recommend them to everyone.
