The LG 47LW5600 has it all, and then some. This 47" beauty features a 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution with LED backlighting and local dimming for incredible contrast and detail. 3D done different
The 3D of the LG 47LW5600 isn't the same as most of the 3DTVs that have come out in the past year or so. Most modern 3DTVs use a technique called active shutter. Basically, it shows a picture for the right eye and a picture for the left eye in quick succession for each frame, displaying a total of 240 frames per second. The glasses feature two LCD lenses that block out one eye at a time (at the same super-fast speed), so that each eye only sees the frames meant for it. It's pretty cool technology, but it has some downsides. For starters, the glasses are expensive and heavier because they require batteries. That's where passive 3D technology on TVs like this one comes in. With passive 3D technology, rather than having two separate pictures per frame, one frame is shown with the pictures for both the right and left eyes (120 frames per second). The glasses feature special polarized lenses so that each eye only sees that part of the picture meant for it. Not only does this make the glasses lighter, more affordable, and more comfortable, it offers a wider viewing angle and smoother picture. Passive 3D is the same technology used in 3D movie theaters. Because of its numerous advantages, passive 3D systems like LG's Cinema 3D TV are actually preferred 3 to 1 by movie-watchers. So as you shop for a new 3DTV, remember that not all 3D is created equal.
