The new HDMI 1.4 — a whole new dimension in home theater
Certainly, one of the most significant lynchpins of the high definition home theater has been the HDMI interface. High Definition Multimedia Interface connectivity and cables have allowed both Full HD 1080p video and 7.1-channel studio-quality surround sound to be transmitted along a single cable, ensuring optimal audio and video signal fidelity and dramatically simplifying home theater setup. As you go about assembling your new 3D-capable home theater — 3D HDTV, 3D Blu-ray player, 3D Blu-ray movies &mdash there's not doubt that you're going to want to tie the whole thing together using the advanced data-transmission and utter simplicity of HDMI. Accordingly, a new, expanded, future-ready version of HDMI has been developed: HDMI Version 1.4. Sporting this latest HDMI standard, Onkyo's TX-NR5008 receiver not only allows for full pass-through of high definition 3D video from your 3D Blu-ray player to your 3D HDTV, but it even supports HDMI v1.4's new Audio Return Channel. When you connect an A/V device like a friend's gaming console directly to your HDTV, you can send the console's audio signal back to the TX-NR5008 using the same HDMI v1.4 cable that carries video to the TV. Accordingly, you can experience your video game's audio track on your multi-channel audio system without the need for any additional cabling. Vectors, linear, shapes . . . let your receiver do the math
In their TX-NR3008 and TX-NR5008 models, Onkyo employs what they call VLSC, or Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry. This unique digital-to-analog conversion circuit helps to mitigate the effects of signal noise. Data is converted between discrete sampling points, which are then joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result: a noiseless, smooth analog audio signal based on the digital source. This is some advanced math, so just let the receiver handle it. VLSC is one of the many features that make this receiver one of the best available.
Bi-amping and BTL . . . check
Taking a cue from the world of high-end audio, the TX-NR5008 incorporates bi-amping and BTL capabilities, albeit at a much lower price than many models with these capabilities. This allows for a number of different home theater set-ups beyond the standard surround-sound configurations. Compatible front speakers can be bi-amped for separate tweeter and woofer inputs. Meanwhile, BTL enables you to double the power output to compatible front speakers. But one warning: each configuration uses the surround back outputs, reducing the total number of channels you could use at once to 7.2.
Unleash the power of HQV
The TX-NR5008 features an HQV Reon-VX video processing chip. This is the most sophisticated video processing chip available for home theater. It helps to upscale your video sources from standard to FullHD 1080p. But what makes it so much better than other chips that upscale video? Well, for one, it doesn't process pixels in blocks like most chips. It processes them individually for enhanced accuracy without unwanted artifacts. Images scaled by the Reon-VX chip contain 80% new pixels to augment the original video data. This provides a clearer picture as opposed to scalers that artificially expand the pixels leaving a blocky image. This chip also filters jaggies and artifacts, reducing random "mosquito" and block (codec) noise. Finally it enables color region enhancement and the rendering of more than one billion colors. With the Reon-VX video processing chip from HQV, your Onkyo TX-NR5008 will ensure that your get the best picture from every source possible, in FullHD 1080p.
Any way you want it . . . you can probably have it
How would you like your house's home theater set up? Consider it done with the TX-NR5008 from Onkyo. This adaptive receiver lets you choose the set-up you want with a 9.2-channel capability and distinct audio in up to three different zones. There are eleven different powered outputs. Eleven? But aren't there only nine available channels? Yes, there are. Here's the scoop: leading the class in innovation, the TXNR5008 has two different state-of-the-art technologies to improve your soundfield. Audyssey DSX lets you add two "front wide" channels for a more realistic, immersive listening experience. Dolby Pro Logic IIz adds two "front height" channels for a more three-dimensional soundstage. You can choose one or the other for your listening. Either way, you can count on great sound pushed by 145W of power on each of the nine channels (1,305 total Watts). However, you can also expand your home theater beyond one room into two others for a total of three zones playing three different sources. Zone 2 uses the front wide terminals while Zone 3 uses the surround back terminals. For powered output to speakers, you can have both additional zones playing two channels each while still getting 5.2-channel surround in the main zone. Or you can use only one outside zone to keep 7.2-channel sound in the main room. But if you've already got an amp in the main zone or another one, you can have even more channels playing than that. The TXNR5008 has nine channels of pre-amp output plus two channels in each other zone. So if your speakers in your other zones are powered, you can still get powered 9.2-channel surround sound. As a bonus, video is supported in Zone 2 with a composite output. With so many different options, rest assured that nearly any configuration you could realistically ask for is supported.
Networking helps you get ahead
As one of Onkyo's new breed of receivers that can link directly to the internet or to your home PC via a local network, the TX-NR5008 takes streaming audio and internet radio to a whole new level. MP3, WMA Lossless, FLAC, WAV, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, and LPCM files — whether on your PC or from the internet — can now be played back through your main system with unprecedented power and fidelity. The TX-NR5008 brings to life a wide array of internet radio sources, such as Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, Media Fly, Slacker, SIRIUS Internet Radio, and vTuner. As well as being compatible with earlier platforms, the receiver is compatible with Microsoft's new Windows 7 platform, which includes the DLNA-specified "Play To" media-streaming feature. Another benefit of having the TX-NR5008 connected to the internet is that you can then easily update the firmware.
ISF ccc . . . six letters, infinitely helpful
The TX-NR5008 is ISF ccc-certified. You may be asking what that means. Well, that particular badge denotes that this receiver offers the ability for professional-level calibration through the menus. It doesn't mean that you need to be a professional to use the receiver, just that if you are an expert, or you hire an expert to calibrate your system, whoever sets it up will be able to easily access the settings to adjust. Since this is a receiver, its video output can be calibrated to optimize each source. Receivers without this can only have their picture optimized for one or two sources, because the calibration is done on an ISF-ccc certified TV with two settings. But the TX-NR5008 lets you set up each input so that it knows what settings to apply when that signal is output. This gives you the best picture across all your sources.
HDMI times two
The TXNR5008 offers dual-band HDMI output. This gives the viewer the ability to simultaneously display the video output for the main zone on two separate monitors. This could even be wired to a separate room. Dual-band HDMI output is especially great for custom installation or commercial applications.
Don't just take our word for it

HD audio?
We're all used to associating new HD home theater formats, like Blu-ray Disc, with high definition video. But what about HD audio? That's right, you heard us: HD audio. The expanded storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc allows for both Full HD 1080p video and 7.1-channel lossless, studio-quality surround sound audio. Now, just as you need an HDTV to experience 1080p video, so too do you need specific technology to take full advantage of 7.1-channel lossless audio. With its Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio processing decoding technologies, the Onkyo TXNR5008 is able to decode the lossless surround sound audio found on Blu-ray Disc, providing the audio experience the director intended for you to have.

The receiver is great. The sound is great. However, while watching TV, the receiver will sometimes switch between listening modes based on the types of sounds presently being played. This can and often does mean, however that the listening modes are switched many times per minute during scenes that include different types of sounds. While this may not be the worst thing in the world, the switch is accompanied by a very audible clicking sound coming from the receiver, and often a brief period of no sound. This mean that while watching TV, sometimes it clicks very often and you momentarily lose sound during these listening mode changes. Why would Onkyo do this, especially in their flagship model? Trust me, this annoyance is impossible to ignore. You can overcome it by manually setting every listening mode to the same setting, although this overrides a feature which would be very helpful otherwise. If I knew this before buying this receiver, I probably would have chose another receiver.

Let me sum this up, plain and simple. This thing is a BEAST!!! If you are considering the 5008, dont waste another day, just do it. Im still speechless at what I was missing........ I know it is some coin, but this unit is well worth it.

The Processor of Video Signal in this AVR is stunning that Reon processor ROCKS ! the PQ is the best my displays have ever been ... Onkyo TX-NR5008 is one of the best receivers I ever owned and I owned a number of them from Denons flagship lines. This receiver can go toe to toe with Denons flagship receiver 5308. It has excellent build quality and the audio quality is excellent.
