The unit provides solid bass, without booming -- just tight bass, the way it was supposed to be. For a residential environment where I use it can provide much more volume than what is needed. The controls are in the rear, so keep that in mind when considering buying it.

I purchased this Subwoofer to go along with my Yamaha YAS 101 soundbar. While my 101 soundbar has dual 3 subwoofers and really did a great job I wanted to experience what an external subwoofer would add to the 101 without breaking the bank. The YST SW 216 came via Vanns quick shipping, and I plugged the soundbar Sub out on the101 to mono jack in on the subwoofer, turned it on and turned up the volume on the back of the sub to around 4 and it is all that a Subwoofer should be and more. I also can control the subwoofer volume with my 101 remote which is a nice feature.
There is no auto off so one must turn on and off the sub with the power switch on the back of the subwoofer or just leave it on continuously. If you have a switched plug on the back of a receiver this would be a non issue. So far I am completely happy with the 216 and would highly recommend it to anyone wanted great bass for a great price.

I bought this sub to add a bottom line to the sound system at our church at a very reasonable price with not having to add pro priced sub crossovers. It fills in the bass in the 1000 square foot room with 50 people that we cant get from the two Yamaha pro 15inch full range speakers because we cant crank them in the small space. We run a monitor out from the soundboard so we can control the signal to the sub separate from the mains, thereby giving a very good bottom end even at low overall volume levels. Would have given it a 5 on ease of use except that the power switch is manual, i.e., it doesnt sense power on, off, and switch off automatically after a length of time. That is not a problem for us because we only use it several times a week, but for someone who plans to install in a tight space and will use it on and off a lot they should think of that feature. Overall, a great little sub at a fantastic price.

I have been wanting to add a more substantial bassrumble to my surround sound system for a long time. I have a roughly 15 x 15 room with a 13 year old Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 surround sound system hooked up to a Pioneer VSX 1021 AV receiver, all connected to my television and internet. It sounded great, but I thought it could sound better with just a little more bottom end. I have been scouring the classifieds looking for a reasonably priced second-hand sub woofer because I dont have a lot to spend on new equipment right now. I ordered this Yamaha sub hoping that a $100 on sale unit would be the right system for us. Is it ever! The bad Prior to opening the box I bought a dedicated sub woofer cable to run between the Pioneer and the sub. It doesnt work that way. The good Once I figured out that this unit connects between the front speakers and the AV just exactly as the Cambridge Soundworks sub I was in business. The further good Wow. Although the unit is quite large, because our TV is on a stand that sits at an angle in the corner, I was able to fit it behind the stand. The sound, once we adjusted the volume on the sub, is amazing. We get the rumble for the movies, we hear bass notes in songs on television broadcasts and movies that we never heard before. I use the system to listen to ALL kinds of music via Pandora running through the AV and the difference between music with and without the Yamaha sub is stunning. Based upon my limited experience with this unit, I am incredibly pleased with the sound and consider it a steal at retail price and the steal of the decade at the sale price I bought it for.

I hear the sounds the way they should be, instead of muddy bass thumping when I'm watching a movie. If you're on a budget, or aren't a serious audiophile, this sub-woofer should do the trick.

I picked this up for uner $100. I couldnt be happier. Keep in mind that this is a $100 speaker... its not going to change the way you listen to music or movies. But it does add that nice low frequency sound that I needed for newly installed in ceiling speakers. This is what the doctor ordered. I didnt want anything overpowering for my living room... just a little bottom end to my surround sound music system.
The sub is pretty barebones and simple. There is an on-off button, volume knob, and a high-low selector for low pass. It doesnt really give you a huge deal of control on frequency selection, but I think most people looking for $100 subs wouldnt use this anyways or be willing to look past it.
Overall a good looking speaker, that sounds good, at a great price.

I needed a subwoofer for my project recording studio. My otherwise excellent monitors are a little weak on bass, making it difficult to create mixes that translate well to other systems. My budget was limited to around $100. The Yamaha YSTSW216BL has been an excellent solution. Placement is critical! Read the instructions! Since bass can be exaggerated when a speaker is placed directly on the floor, I put a very short isolating pad about an inch tall under the unit, to optimize the sound. The studio is small, and it didnt take much volume from the sub to get the results Id hoped for. What a difference! It would have been nice if it had a continuously adjustable crossover instead of a highlow switch, but for the $100 price point, I think Yamaha made the right call, putting the money into the basic quality of the unit. Im very pleased!

I added some bookshelf speaker for the front, with only a 6 inch woofer, so I needed a powered sub. The main use is for my surround system, but also some music. I cant believed how much better this one sub out does two powered in towers, I very pleased with my purchase. This is for a small family room, it sounds natural, sounds great. As for the power on I plugged it into my Onkyo which has a switched outlet, amp goes off power to the sub off. I have been told not keep the other half of the family up late, and TURN IT DOWN, something about shaking the house. Highly recommended.

I use the system at very low level mostly New Age music and the subwoofer adds the perfect amount of depth and bass at low volume level. I seached for an inexpensive sub-woofer to match it and found this sub from Vanns. I was very impressed by the sound quality and easy setup of this low priced sub. Now it can match up with my small pair of speakers that it plays the big sound of symphony without any stress at all. Thanks to Vanns and Yamaha.

It might be a little to punchy for music. If you are looking for great, chair rattling bass in your movies this is the best sub for the price - easy.

I love my new Yamaha subwoofer. It hooked right up to my Yamaha system with no problems.
The sound is excellent. It is clear and brings the surround sound back to life. My old subwoofer died so I have not had one for almost 2 years. Just the 6 speakers.
I purchased this subwoofer becasue of the price, it was on sale and it was recommended as a replacement to my old one by Yamaha.
I am glad I did. I have only had it for a week or so but I love it. It looks good too!
The only negative is that when you are not using it, it does not go into standby, I have to manually shut it off. I suppose I could just leave it on, but have not gone through the manual completely to find out.

Our condo living room isnt large with the NS-A635As, I didnt need a subwoofer, and was worried that a compact one wouldnt do the job, but that a larger one would take up too much space. It is more than powerful enough to deliver good bass response in fact, I had to turn it down some after my initial setup. Its a great compact powered subwoofer.

Listen to what your ears tell you. I lived with a
$1,000.00 velodyne sf 1000 for 14 years so I hesitated in my purchase. But whats not to like! The bass is tight. Really tight and hard hitting. It fills out the bass end and matches nicely with my JBL L80t3s and a pair of B&W 602s.. It is rated to 25 but that means minus 10db which means it puts out an honest 30. Better than units costing much, much more. The unit itself is very attractive. I have seen other reviews that say it is ugly. NOT SO! Pictures do not do it justice. It is a highly attractive cube of about eleven inches square. The bevels on the corners only add to the impression of something much more expensive. It is a very musical sub and does not overpower the satellites. No crossover control or phase switch. Still, it sounds great. It also has the guts to get you thrown out of just about any apartment building! This unit is Yamahas lowest sub, but it outperforms others that cost so much more. One last note is the location of the port. It is a side firing opening thus it is much easier to adjust the distance from a wall. As everyone is aware the closer or further you move a ported speaker the tighter or looser the bass can be. Most manufacturers put the port in back because it is an ugly spud, or they put it in the front. PRETTY, PRETTY! Not this one. The port is right where it needs to be. AND IT IS A FRONT FIRING SUB ALSO! I WANT PERFORMANCE NOT PRETTY. WITH THIS UNIT I GET BOTH! Very thoughtful on the part of Yamaha to do this. FIT AND FINISH ARE ABSOLUTELY SUPERB! And last but not least is the honest question of where can you get a servo sub at this level and for the price. BUY THIS SUB AND FIND TRUE BASS BLISS! YOUR WALLET WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT TOO!

Was looking for an inexpensive sub to fill out my home theater system Pioneer VSX 9040-TXH receiver, JBL Sat10 center and surrounds. Saw the Polk PSW10 sub rated highly on a couple of popular websites, but started looking into the Yamaha when I saw it as an alternative to the Polk. Looked at the specs and a lot of reviews and decided on the Yamaha based on price. It has definitely met my expectations - adds the depth and fullness to movies that I was looking for ~14x28 room and find myself listening to more music as well. The size and shape are fine by me, and the fact that it does not have auto-onoff is not a big deal either since I have it in a location that is easy for me to get to and my wife likes to be able to turn it off. Also, using a y-adapter for the connection into the sub definitely increased the sound level I dont know if thats the right way to say it - it just seems like more sound is coming out, its not necessarily louder, if that makes any sense. Im clearly not an audiophile, but for the price and for what I needed it to do, its perfect.

I bought this to go with my new HK-3390 receiver which is the first one Ive had that has sub outputs. I currently have Pioneer 6.5 bookshelf speakers and they clearly needed some help at the bass end. There are three brands that I encountered in this general price range Yamaha, Polk, and Onkyo. I liked the looks of the Polk but It only went down to 35 Hz. The Onkyo is more powerful than the Yamaha, but I didnt care for the looks and it didnt have speaker level inputs. I dont need them now, but I might want them someday. The Yamaha was the rock bottom cheapest and had good reviews, so I decided to go for it. I generally dont like black speakers but my Pioneers are black anyway and this has nice styling with the angled corners. It doesnt have auto onoff, but it draws little enough current that I can plug it into the switched outlets on my receiver. The high cutoff point only has two positions unlike the others which are continuously variable. That was a serious draw back, so I downloaded the manual from Yamaha and discovered that the low position was perfect to go with my Pioneers which have a 60 Hz. low end. The manual showed me how to set it so it would form a seamless continuum with my bookshelf speakers. That was the clincher for me. If you need more flexibility you may want to go with one of the other brands mentioned. The sound seems great. I am discovering bass that I never even suspected was there on many of my CDs.

I am using this subwoofer in combo with a Yamaha RX-V365 amplifier and everything sounds great. The subwoofer has a very natural sound to it, a plus coming from a 10 driver, and when it comes to playing some heavy bass this subwoofer does not let you down either. A very well rounded sub. Perfect for anyone looking for quality bass at a great price. My only con is this subwoofer does not have an auto onoff feature, so it must be placed in an open location where its easy to turn off and on. this worked out to my advantage by giving me a better sound stage.... instead of just shoving it in the corner under a desk like I used to.

Having already spent a bundle I needed a subwolfer at a competitve price. My fears were for less than $100 I was going to get something that either looked cheap, did not have enough power, or had a muddy sound.
The actual components wood finish is more than acceptable and does not look cheap at all. The base response is tight and focused with plenty of power for a average sized bedroom but would probably do the job even in a largish room. I have it paired with
bookshelf Boston Accustics in front and KEF
in back in a 5.1 system I just assembled.
It is more than holding its own. I also listened
to slightly higher priced Polks and Venodynes, at this price point I dont hear much of a difference. I would purchase again.
Had some setup problems which were due to the sub cable, called Yamaha and they were very knowedgable and helped me locate the problem.

I decided on the Yamaha sub-woofer in large part because of other favorable reviews, the reasonable price and the fact that I recently purchased a Yahama receiver with which I am very pleased--the quality matched that of my old Nakamichi at one third the price.
The only issue I have with the sub-woofer is that the power switch is located in the rear. I overcame that by plugging the sub-woofer into one of the switchable outlets on the receiver.

This subwoofer performs well for a price under $100.00. The forward facing driver allows it to be placed in my entertainment center since I did not have the space to have it stand alone. The volume control allows the unit to integrate well with your other speakers. I do feel that the specifications should clearly have noted that there is no signal sensing circuit so the unit is always on although the power draw should be minimal. I gave a 4 for ease of use since all the adjustment controls are on the rear of the unit. Overall...quite satisfied.

Because we used to have a pet who took great joy in peeing on speakers I have had 4 subwoofers in the past 6 years. This is the last as that pet is now gone, but the pre pee sound on this one is the best of all of them. I have had units that cost twice as much but none as good. Somehow this unit seems to know how to provide the bass punch to music and movies without overwhelming the other sounds and I have yet to find myself having to turn it down to balance sound. On a scale of 1 - 5 I rate this unit a 5. It is perfect for my use.

I was concerned about buying an item like this on-line due to shipping problems or by not being able to see the product. I will say Vanns did an awesome job of making sure this product was properly packaged and even in very bad snowy conditions everything was perfectly safe. This product cannot be beat especially for the price. I have been looking for a nice sub-woofer for some time now that would not break the bank and this one definitely fit the bill.
This product has great tight base sounds that are not overpowering. I did not want something that the neighbors could hear a block down the street, just something to fill in the bass gaps in my surround sound. This speaker was super simple to hook up and adjust to my taste. When looking at the instructions no matter what system I may upgrade to in the future this sub-woofer will be able to interface with.
Thank you guys for your great customer service. You have absolutely won a repeat customer here!

I purchased this subwoofer primarily because of the brand name and the price. I have always owned Yamaha equipment, and they didnt disappoint me with this purchase, either.
I couldnt ask for better performance. Granted, my living room isnt the largest, but it handles everything sent to it without any unwanted distortion or boominess. And with that, it will still go louder, but it would overpower my current satellite speakers.
I really like its appearance, which was another thing I liked about it. For a piece of lower end stereo equipment, I dont think you could ask for a better wood finish.
The only thing I was disappointed with was the instructions given in the owners manual. There are several options to hook up this unit, and, having a Yamaha amplifier, I assumed it would be a breeze. But the manual instructs you that if the line output terminal on your amplifier is labeled Pre Out, make sure there are two line out terminals labeled Pre Out. My newly purchased Yamaha amplifier only has one 1 subwoofer line output, and it is labeled Pre-Out. As this is the only way to hook the subwoofer to experience 5.1, and tried only hooking the single Pre Out and it worked okay.
All in all, Im very happy with my purchase, and would recommend this unit to anyone.

I bought this sub to go with my home theater system, after reading all the reviews I could find on it. So far, I am very pleased with this product. I use it mainly while watching DVD movies and only rarely for just music. I am by no means an audiophile, so all I can say is that this speaker makes a big difference in the overall sound experience for my small living room. The bass is nice, and I do not notice any rumbling...the only thing I wish it had was a power light on the front to remind me to turn it off when Im finished using it...the power light is on the rear of the unit and I find myself forgetting to turn it off. Other than that, I have had no problems with it at all. For the low price I paid for it, I certainly cant downgrade it for this small inconvenience. So, overall, I am very pleased and would buy it again.

I use it with higher end KEF stereo speakers I am not a fan of multi-channel surround sound - think its lousy for music and pretty much an audio industry scam to up sell you stuff you dont need. It fills out the low end for special effects movies well without making music sound too boomy. Convenient volume adjustment. Would be nice if it was smaller, lighter, and more stylish.

I treated myself to this subwoofer for Christmas after visiting a friend and hearing sounds on his home theater that werenÂ’t to be found on mine. I did some a lot of online research, read testimonials and opinions of several products and decided that for a small room and at a very reasonable price, the YSTSW216BL was worth trying.
The subwoofer is powered through my receiverÂ’s powered outlet and is only on when I need the amplified sound. But when it is on, it brings my Bose bookshelf speakers to life. I could not be happier. Action movies are much more enjoyable and my music has much sharper, realistic bass.
Instead of spending money on a complete new sound system I am completely satisfied with my old system plus the new subwoofer. I canÂ’t believe I waited so long to do this.

For the money, you really cant beat this subwoofer. It produces excellent, clear bass tones . I picked the front-firing model so that the sound is projected out instead of down through the floor. I am very happy with this purchase and the overall experience will Vanns.

I recently purchased 2 of these 10-inch front firing subwoofers when they were on sale.
When use both subwoofers together, they produce powerful bass to fill my large family room.
Good for smaller room if used by itself.
Con no auto on switch so I have to manually turn it off to conserve electricity.
Overall Im happy. Great deal.

I agree with all the other 5 star reviews on this product. I connected it to an Onkyo receiver along with 2 infinity P362s that I thought already sounded pretty good, and WOW, more than I expected, especially with movies. I purchased it solely because of the great reviews and the very affordable price. I dont know how you can go wrong for the price. My only complaint would be that the on indicator light would be on the front instead of the back.

I have studied and studied low dollar and high dollar subs for quite sometime. and even went over to different friends homes and listed to a variety of different subs in their homes.
After a couple months of this i bought one of these yamaha subs from vanns last week for under 100 bucks shipped during their end of year sale. I have to say it is the best sub i have experienced yet. this little 10 sub is very powerful and packs a big punch in my theater room.
The whole family was amazed at how well this made our theater room come together. I have sony ss f6000 floor speakers front & rear and yamaha center channel speaker.. together this is all amazing and alot less invested than the more exspensive brands.
I am so happy with this sub and the price that i ordered another one today.. The customer service is top notch at Vanns.. Shipping is super fast..
You will be amazed with the performance of this Subwoofer. Once you have it all tuned in with your system it is very impressive!

All my life I have been actively engaged in building amps, headphone amps, speakers, and sub woofers. In that respect I consider myself an audiophile and one that is very critical in achieving the best sound. Never having had much money to spend I ended up making most of my audio equipment. Not this time, I wanted a subwoofer to pick up the bottom end a little, not expecting some miracle product for such a low price I went ahead and bought the Yamaha ampsubwoofer thinking that if it didnt work out I could modify it for my needs. Was I surprised when I got it a day earlier than promised and turned it on for the first time. The output of this sub is absolutely wonderful, it is extremely smooth and does deliver more than you would expect from such a small amp driving it. The bass is accurate, smooth, never overpowering and blends really good with the rest of the system. I have never been one to go for a boom-boom sound, I like mine to be accurate, smooth and to have the ability to blend in with the rest of the system. This one allows you to do that and then some! I only use it for audio, not TV or DVDs, but in audio it tells the complete story. You can not go wrong with this sub. Thank you Vanns for getting it to me so soon.

This little sub packs some serious power more than the humble price suggests. So much so that im ordering one more. It blends perfectly with my sony towers and two 18inch subs, it has the kick that an 18 just cant deliver. This sub goes very low for a 10 and decently loud while doing so. If youre thinking about buying one or two dont hesitate.

Yamaha is known for its high quality products and its YST-SW216 Sub-Woofer is no exception. The unit is the perfect size to place in a hidden location if you like, or equally attractive if you would like it
displayed. The bass emanating from this unit is superb. It is clean, tight and with excellent punch. The unit has a bass volume control, enabling the user to fully enjoy this Sub-Woofer in either a small, mid-size or large room. An on-off switch is an added bonus. The quality of the build seems very solid as well. And did I forget to mention the excellent value of this product and how affordable it is, it is simply amazing. Lastly, you guessed it, I own this unit and I give it a 5 rating across the board!

I have a large open basement home theatermulti-purpose room. This sub fills the entire room with deep, clean bass. I was so amazed by this sub that I bought two of them, and placed one is each front corner. For the price, why not buy 2?? My brother recently brought his 600 dollar sub down to my basement so we could compare his overpriced sub vs. my two yamahas. Mine sounded just as good, if not better! He was upset that he spent so much money.
Other reviewers noted that the bass can be boomy or muddy sounding. Not sure what they are listening to, bc there is nothing boomy about these subs... just low clean thumping bass.
I highly recommend them.

I was able to hook this up to my home theater system in minutes. I popped in the movie Cars and the whole family commented about how it sounded like we were in the movie theater. What a difference a subwoofer makes to the home theater experience. It was one of those rare moments where you know youll never have buyers regret. Hard to believe the quality based on the cheap price.
I liked the documentation that comes with the system - it outlines the six basic ways you can connect the system - one or two subwoofers, line out versus speaker wire, an amp that has two sets of front speakers versus one set of front speakers. The documentation also has a lot of tips to adjust the volume and high cut switch to arrive at the sound you like.
Customer service from vanns.com was superb - which I wasnt expecting since I had chosen vanns.com based soley off of it being the cheapest price. FedEx had delivered the unit to the wrong address. Vanns.com offered to either credit my account or ship a replacement pending the FedEx trace on the item. Customer service was quick to reply, friendly, and helpful on an issue that wasnt even their responsibility.

I was looking to add a good solid sub to my system. This unit did exactly that. It has plenty of power for my usage consisting of mainly movies, DVDs and music. My room is about as far from surround sound friendly as any room could be. Its L-shaped, hard wood floors, terrible accoustics, my wife is a bit reluctant to hang my rear speakers so they sit against the back wall and below the level of my sofa yet the SW216BL brought the system to life. The price was terrific since even if I had spent $1,000.00 on a sub, the room itself would have defeated the purpose, not to mention speaker location. I have Klipsch front speakers, a Sony Center Channel and Optimus Rear speakers so my system is hardly a matched setup. The addition of the Yamaha sub was very much worth the price.

After doing a great deal of research...and knowing that you get what you pay for...I thought that I would give this Yamaha a try. This is a case where you get more than one would think...times three.
The room in which Im using the YSTSW216bl IS 14X 14and mated to an ENERGY TAKE 5.1 surround system. This SUB floods the room, and all three floors of the house with crisp, clear bass and gives the low end punch of subs at three times the price.
If youre looking for a sub to make your current system come to life, on a budget or not, you wont be disappointed by this unit!
