Great match for your theater system
Like any true home theater enthusiast, you're passionate about bass audio. Why? Well, you remember the days before you had a sub, a time when action movies were merely visual spectacles. Then you bought a subwoofer and your home theater experience was forever changed. Suddenly, the audio track developed an entirely new dimension: the sound of a revving engine grew from a growl to an outright roar, on-screen explosions were upgraded from fire-cracker status to room-shaking detonations. Literally. Unlike high-frequency audio, bass audio can be both heard and felt. Fueling its 10" woofer driver with 200W of built-in Class-D power amplification, the Velodyne VDR-10 serves up bass audio that redefines the audio dimension of your home theater experience. Further, a slot-loaded bass-reflex cabinet design limits distortion and maximizes bass impact.
The sultans of sub
The folks at Velodyne make subwoofers, and subwoofers, oh yeah, and subwoofers. Really. That's it. They only make one thing. So, as you can imagine, they do that one thing well. Take the VDR-10, featuring digital signal processing. Digital signal processing controls all of the VDR-10's functions, from listening presets and a night mode to low-pass crossover and distortion-protection circuitry. The level of control and tuning capable with digital signal processing allows Velodyne's VDR subwoofers to produce the lowest distortion, deepest bass, and highest output possible while also reproducing music accurately and complementing the output of your main speakers.
Take control
The most common hassle with subwoofer design is placement of the sub's controls on the rear of the unit where they're hard to reach. Now, maybe this isn't so bad when we're talking about subs that only have On/Off and Volume control buttons, but we're talking about the VDR-10 from Velodyne. Not only does this Velodyne sub sport phase adjustment control, but it also offers four preset modes and a night-listening mode. And to top it all off, you can control all of the VDR-10's functions with the included full-feature remote control. While the Night Mode limits the maximum output of the sub for late night listening, four preset modes optimize output for a variety of genres. First, the Movie preset offers maximum output and impact for explosions and other action-movie content. Second, the R&B-Rock preset provides the driving bass found in today's rock music. Third, the Jazz-Classical mode offers the tightest, cleanest, lowest-distortion bass. Finally, the Games preset serves up the maximum loudness available for the impact of video-game audio.
Forward-firing design offers versatile placement
The low-frequency bass audio reproduced by subwoofers has low directionality. Whoa! That sounds a bit technical! But, in all reality, the concept is quite simple: The sound waves characteristic of bass audio are wide enough that their source can be difficult to locate with the ear. On the one hand, this is an advantage of bass audio because it gives the impression of room-filling audio. On the other hand, however, without a little directionality, bass audio loses some of its punch. Now, many subwoofers are designed with drivers that point downward, utilizing the floor as a guide for creating directionality. However, when down-firing subs are placed on shelves in A/V cabinets, their bass sound waves can cause unwanted resonance that detracts from your listening experience. Allowing for versatile speaker placement, Velodyne had outfitted the VDR-10 with a forward-firing driver design. Not only will the VDR-10 deliver full, dynamic bass without unwanted vibration when placed in a cabinet, but it will also reproduce clear, controlled bass when placed in a corner.
Plays well with others
Finally, you might like to know that the Velodyne VDR-10 subwoofer's driver is magnetically shielded, meaning that this unit can be safely placed near other A/V components without the risk or interference or damage. This increases versatility of speaker placement.
