Why french door?

The design of the Maytag MFF2558VEM was no accident. The french door, slide-out bottom mount design is quite functional, although far from utilitarian. The reasons for choosing a french door design are many. For one thing, the bottom-mount necessity of a french door design keeps the food you use most right at eye level. The problem with this was that accessing the freezer practically required getting on your hands and knees, and quite frankly, frozen peas just aren't worth that. So, the freezer is a glide-out drawer which makes use of the SmoothClose door system to provide you easy access to all of your chilled foods. However, none of that explains why the french door design iself is better than other configurations. French door allows you to open only one side of the fridge, so it halves the door swing depth for easier travel in the kitchen and more placement options. Plus, opening only half of the fridge lets out much less cold air, so your food stays at a more stable temperature, and thus in better condition, and you conserve energy required to cool the air. With the french door design, everybody wins.

I dont recommend this product due to failure within three years. Bought the refridgerator in November 2009, we were in the process of gutting our new house. So we didnt use the new fridge until May 2010. December 2010, we had water on the floor on the sides of the front feet. The freezer had frozen everything with freezer burn. Everything had white frozen ice. We lost everything. We had to defrost the freezer, as the bottom of the freezer was a sheet of ice along with the back of the freezer. Worked ok for a while but still had the water on the floor. So we laid a towel at the feet to absorb the water. Then just this year we have heard the compressor come on and off, as to it getting louder. And it running for very long periods. In March 2012, I noticed the side of the door, not the inside door in fridge, but the side where the two doors come together when you close them, very hot. Then a couple of hours later the inside was warm. We noticed the inside of the freezer was also frozen with real thick ice on the back wall inside. But the food was still frozen in the freezer. So just the fridge part quit. The issue with the water first, we called Maytag. They said sorry your out of your year warrenty. But they could send someone out for $75 a hour. No thanks. Now the fridge has quit now. Buying a new one to repace it. Not a Maytag. A fridge should last more that 3 and a half years. Ive read a lot of bad reviews on this product.

I love this refrigerator. Just one problem. The left door does not always close completely. You must be very careful to be sure that the door is closed.
