First and foremost, with a french-door design, your door width is cut in half, so you can have a wider refrigerator with more space and still not need as much room for the door swing as a traditional model. Secondly, opening only one side lets less cool air out, keeping your food at a more stable temperature, and thus in better condition, as well as reducing energy costs. This also makes accessing food more convenient. Finally, many people find the french-door design very visually stimulating, particularly in kitchens with split cabinetry.
