Cooler temperatures inhibit the growth of microbes that might cause illness, odor, or spoilage, and the use of some sort of a sealed enclosure reduces food's exposure to airborne microbes and temperature fluctuations. In general, modern refrigerators provide these services. However, most modern refrigerators are designed with only one compressor system, meaning that the same mechanism is used to cool both the refrigerator and the freezer compartments. Because refrigerators cool food by means of the circulation of cool air, this means that the same air is shared between the compartments. Not only does opening either the refrigerator or freezer door place more stress on the cooling system to maintain the temperature in both compartments, but the shared air system makes easy the transfer of odor from one compartment to the other.
