1080p -- The Best HDTV Display Technology

There are two common high definition display formats: 720p and 1080p. For state-of-the-art high definition, 1080p is clearly the best choice. Resolution can be measured in pixels, which are individual dots in the picture. The majority of HD programming available today is broadcast in a resolution of 1080 pixels (vertical) by 1920 pixels (horizontal). In order to appreciate the incredible detail available from these programs, you need a display that can show you every pixel in the original broadcast. 1080p can do that. By comparison, with a 720p display, the picture must be resized, and approximately 50 percent of the original information in the broadcast is lost.

Interesting fact -- NASA chose JVC D-ILA technology for image analysis after a shuttle launch. The lack of pixel structure doesn't interfere with critical image analysis and provides no spatial dithering as in other technologies, so no artifacts are projected onto the display. The JVC difference is their unique, 3-chip LCoS design. LCoS chips are reflective, for the absolute best brightness and contrast in the industry. By using three of these chips, they eliminate the mechanical color wheel used by other competing 1080p manufacturers. Futhermore, each chip has the full 1080 x 1920 resolution. That's two million pixels per chip, or six million pixels total in the JVC HD-ILA light engine. Other competing 1080p manufacturers create their picture with as little as one million pixels in their light engine. 1080p Connectivity -- JVC HD-ILA Makes It Easy

An increasing number of source products (including Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD) will offer the ability to output an HD signal with full 1080p resolution. The "p" refers to the fact that the signal is displayed as a series of complete progressive frames. The HD58S998 includes two 1080p compatible HDMI inputs which provide the highest quality all-digital connection for these sources. For the purposes of broadcasting, the common signal format is 1080i. The "i" refers to the fact that the picture is split into interlaced fields. Each field contains 1/2 of the complete picture. GENESSA -- JVC's Exclusive 5th Generation D.I.S.T.

The challenge to television display engineers these days is in making even the oldest and the poorest quality sources appear glorious on the big screen HDTVs. JVC engineers answer to that call was to develop a picture processing technology that would not only deliver the advantages of HD resolution, but also one that would create natural looking images with remarkable detail, pure color reproduction and precision focus no matter what the source. The result is JVC's 5th Gerneration Digital Image Scaling Technology (D.I.S.T.) with GENESSA. This chip detects and seamlessly up-scales all SD sources (480i and 480p) and all HD sources (720p or 1080i) and displays at 1080p. This customized upscaling insures that no matter what the original video source, the images will look as sharp, bright and smooth as intended. D.I.S.T. combines all of the core image processing, noise reducing and color management technologies into one communication unit within the GENESSA chip. GENESSA is the industry's first CPU dedicated to such image processing and its accelerated 32bit "turbo" powered picture processing provides for both super fast sampling and more efficient communication between the technologies that comprise the D.I.S.T. engine. Because all of the core technologies are able to work together and faster, the HD58S998 yields incredibly fast calculations that translate to a smoother picture and a better resolution image.

All The Right Connections

The HD58S998 HD-ILA is ready for the lastest technology with two HDMI inputs that can accept a 1080p input. This is the highest resolution HD signal that is available. This makes the HD58S998 the perfect choice for seeing the best possible picture from your Blu-ray disc player as well as future HD-DVD players and game consoles. In addition, HDMI is the perfect all-digital connection for D-VHS high definition VCRs as well as upconverting DVD players and recorders with an HDMI ouptut. The HD58S998 also has two auto sensing component video inputs, a PC input, S-Video and AV inputs. There's also a fixed audio output. A Smart Input contains jacks for component video, S-Video and composite video all in one input. It's perfectly suited to accept signals from an AV receiver with a Monitor Out containing component video, S-video and composite video. All the separate components connected to the AV receiver can be hooked up via the receiver's Monitor Out, directly to the Video Input-1 on the TV. The Smart Input constantly scans the available devices so when you select a new device through your AV receiver remote, the TV responds accordingly.

Other Great Features

The HD58S998 offers a built-in ATSC/QAM tuner. The built-in tuner allows you to receive over-the-air high definition broadcasts. Plus, a single NTSC tuner provides such features as Twin Mode, Index and Freeze for more convenient television viewing. JVC's exclusive 5-Point Color Management employs a pin-point sampling process of the four colors (green, yellow, red and blue) and samples flesh tones so they appear warm and natural. Advanced Hyper Surround Plus creates the impression of a 3D sound field with advanced vocal processing using only the speakers that are built into the HD58S998.
