The BRAVIA Engine — low emissions, high performance

Video performance is a function of more than resolution: video processing is a key element, and when it comes to processing, the BRAVIA KDL26M4000 uses nothing less than an engine. Sony's BRAVIA® Engine&trade technology consists of a fully digital video processor that employs a collection of unique algorithms to significantly reduce video "noise" and produce sharp, vibrant, lifelike images through which a 720p-resolution panel reaches its full potential.

Hi def is about more than just resolution

It's true — high definition is about more than just the number of pixels that a flat panel HDTV has. The Sony KDL26M4000's 720p LCD panel delivers more than a high definition 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. The teeny little "p" in "720p" is your sign that this flat panel HDTV is capable of displaying video content 'progressively'. Progressive scanning of video content refers simply to the way in which an image is "written" onto the screen. With a method known as interlaced scanning, for each complete image, first all of the odd horizontal pixel lines are shown, and then all of the even lines are filled in. Without special built-in processing technologies, this method can result in an image with a slightly choppy or flickering transition between images. Progressive scanning, on the other hand, writes each line of the entire scene sequentially, and in the same time it takes interlaced scanning to write each half separately. The result is nothing short of a smoother, cleaner video image. In combination with a fast panel-response time (i.e. how fast the panel's pixels can show a new image), the KDL26M4000's progressive-scan capability is ideal for fast-motion video, like action movies or sports. Also, the widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio delivers a broad, theater-like view of all your favorite video.

Contrast — Advanced and enhanced

Your flat panel HDTV and a poorly lit alley are not the same thing. "Well, duh", you might say, but we're serious. Whereas, with good reason, you might not want to see what's lurking in a dark alley's shadows, when it comes to watching video on your HDTV, you do want to be able to see every detail (hence, high definition), even in dark or shadowy scenes. Using real-time image processing to dynamically adjust backlight levels, the KDL26M4000's Advanced Contrast Enhancer reproduces improved contrast for deep blacks in darker scenes and fine detail in shadows, revealing all the details that the director intended for you to see. Now, if the movie you're watching has a scene with a poorly lit alley . . .
