At its most basic, high definition is a matter of pixel resolution, and one number says it all — 1080p. The "1080" is shorthand for "1920 x 1080", or the resolution of a panel's display — 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. This means that you see every scene with over 2 million points of detail. The "p" (for "progressive") in "1080p" refers to the way in which an image is 'written' across a display's pixels. Overcoming the judder of interlaced-scanned images — or images shown by writing all of the odd before all of the even-numbered lines — progressive-scanned images are shown by writing the lines of each image sequentially, for smooth image reproduction.
