High Definition Multimedia Interface |
The SD4980 features a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connection. HDMI is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video connection. HDMI provides the best interface between a DVD player and compatible products, such as a digital television (DTV). When matched with a compatible TV, this single interconnecting cable combines: Multi-channel audio, uncompressed digital video, intercommunication between devices and simple control Protocols. This single cable connection ensures that all signals remain in their pure digital form and secure by use of High Definition Copy Protection (HDCP) regardless of signal output resolution. The SD4980 also has component, S-Video and RCA-video connections if you don't have an HDMI connection on your television. |
Video Upconversion |
The SD4980's HDMI connection can support uncompressed digital video up to HDTV level resolution. Thus, the player makes use of this conduit by up-converting the standard DVD picture resolution to nearly HDTV-quality with output resolutions of 720p or 1080i. This makes a DVD player with an HDMI connection the perfect match for today's digital televisions. And because this conversion is performed in the player, the signal remains free from excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts. |
DivX Home Theater Certified |
DivX Home Theater Certification allows playback of DivX (.div/.dvix) AVI and MPEG4 (.ASF) compressed files downloaded from the internet from a personal computer and stored on a CD-R/-RW. The support extends to the full version of DivX 3.11, 4.12 and 5x as well as DivX PRO, with video resolutions of 720 x 480 at 30 fps and 720 x 576 at 25 fps. You also get audio support for a multitude of formats including: MP3, AC-3 (2 channel and 5.1 channel), WMA, LCPM, ADPCM, and Ogg Vorbis. |
More To See and Hear |
The JPEG viewer in the SD4980 enables the display of digital photographs captured in the JPEG format. Simply load the CD with your favorite photos and create custom slide shows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control. The Digital Picture Zoom lets you select an area of the picture and zoom in on it. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces superior color fidelity and resolution, even when you're zoomed in. This feature can also be used to expand letterbox-only films to increase the viewable area on-screen. The MP3 and WMA audio compatibility of the SD4980 expands its functionality to include playback of custom music collections encoded in MP3 or WMA digital audio format onto CD-R or CD-RW media. There are also an increasing number of commercially produced discs now available in these formats that you can enjoy on your new DVD player thanks to its additional decoding abilities. |
Other Connections |
If your television doesn't have an HDMI connection, don't worry. The SD4980 has plenty of other connections that provide quality signal transfer. A ColorStream Pro component video output allows a high quality signal to be sent from the SD4980 to your TV. When this connection is utilized with today's HD-compatible sets, typical NTSC artifacts (like video noise and dot crawl) are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with unequaled color purity. Digital Cinema Progressive (3:2 Pulldown) delivers the smoothest, most film-like images to any progressive scan television, such as an HD-compatible one, and ensures maximum resolution. Coaxial and Optical Digital Audio Output sends the audio signal to an audio/video receiver in its digital form, allowing access to the Dolby Digital or DTS sound track encoded on the DVD disc. Virtual Surround Sound provides a simulated surround sound effect from sources that contain only a stereo soundtrack. This is convenient when playing older DVD films or for use with home theaters not equipped with multi-channel playback compatibility. |
Save Your Screen |
The SD4980 can be set to automatically go into a screen saver mode after several minutes of inactivity. While in this mode, the Toshiba DVD logo appears and "ping-pongs" across the screen. Many movies will display the main movie menu indefinietly after the movie has ended. If left onscreen for a prolonged period, burn-in on the TV screen may result without this feature. |
