A refreshing new direction
In the world of gaming, for years, it's been a rat race to see which console can produce the most powerful, fastest machine with the best graphics. Enough is enough, Nintendo said. Rather than get lost in the crowd of massive, superpowered, experts-only systems, Nintendo finally said, "Hey, you remember how we used to play Mario's Duck Hunt on the original NES? What about when Zelda was a big thing for N64? Or Sonic on the Sega Genesis? We should do more of that." So, Nintendo threw out the mold in designing the Wii. Their goal: to make gaming fun again; make it something everyone can enjoy. And they did just that. The Wii introduces a whole new way to play, devoid of the elitist culture found in other systems. With the Wii, everyone can play, from small kids, to college students, to grandparents, using the motion-sensing controllers. It's all about having fun gaming. Wii welcomes you.
Choose your Channel
One unique feature of Wiis is the use of Channels. From the menu, you can browse your available Channels. In essence, a Channel is a small, convenient application for you to use. Many Channels are free. You can hold up to 48 Channels on your Wii, choosing which to add or remove (some Channels, like the Disc channel, can't be removed). There are currently less than the maximum number of channels available, so you can keep every Wii Channel on your Wii if you want. And, if you remove a Channel, you can add it again for free later. Below is a list of current Channels with descriptions for each.
Nunchuks? How family-friendly is this?
Settle down — nunchuk is just a name for a really cool controller. But, nunchuks aren't the main part of the controller. The core of the controller is the Wii Remote. The Wii remote is a convenient, handheld unit that combines the familiarity of a remote control with the latest in motion-sensing technology, so it may be a tennis racket in one game and a boxing glove in another for some real fun! The remote is also used to navigate the menus and Channels of the Wii. The second part of the included controller is the nunchuk. But rather than a weapon, the nunchuk serves with additional controls, and is also motion-sensing, so it has similar functionality to the Wii remote. Finally, the sensor bar communicates wirelessly with up to four Wii remotes for the freedom to play. Additional controllers, including the classic controller, guitar, and steering wheel can be purchased for easier playing of other games.
Less is more
One other benefit of opting out of the super-powered-processing race is that the Wii doesn't require as much space. Compare it to other game consoles, and you'll notice Wii is clearly the smallest. This allows it more convenient placement, and it looks pretty cool too, especially if placed in the included console stand. But, Wii is also easily the most energy-efficient console in its class, so you don't have to worry about shutting it off at night — in fact, WiiConnect24 will receive updates and emails while you sleep, letting you know with a blue glowing light around the disc slot.
