And it delivers all this video and audio playback with powerful video and audio digital-to-analog converters (DAC). Finally, an HDMI output and digital coaxial and optical audio outputs offer advanced A/V system connectivity.

DVD on the HDTV stage

Your new HDTV has a 720p or 1080p resolution, but the video on your favorite DVDs has a resolution of 480i. In order to resolve this little discrepancy, the aid of a video scaler must be enlisted. Now, most HDTVs have a built-in video scaler that upscales (or upconverts) the DVD video signal once it reaches the TV. Great. The only problem is that the scaling happens after the signal has traveled all the way from the DVD player along a video cable where it is susceptible to interference and degradation: errors that will only be amplified by the HDTV's scaler. Because it upconverts DVD video right at the source (i.e. right in the DVD player) with its own built-in video scaling, the DVSP506 eliminates the risk of unwanted distortion and quality-loss in the ultimate picture you see. Further, video upscaling takes standard definition 480i video and enhances it to near-HD 720p or 1080p levels, both improving the resolution and adding progressive scanning for a DVD video picture that is more detailed and more fluid, especially during fast-action scenes. To take full advantage of the DVSP506's video upscaling to 1080p, you'll need to connect this Onkyo DVD player to your HDTV with an HDMI cable.
