Sony DVP-NS90V Features |

The Hook Up |
| In addition to DVD video discs that you rent from the local video store, the DVPNS90V gives you the option to play other formats. You can pop in your favorite music CD, even if it's something you recorded yourself on CD-R or CD-RW disc. It even plays discs filled with MP3 files. And with the growing popularity of DVD burners, you'll be relieved to know that this machine plays many DVD formats, including DVD-R/RW (video mode) and DVD+R/DVD+RW (video mode) discs. So, whatever your pleasure, you're ready to roll with this dynamic DVD player. This DVD player will also let you take advantage of today's high scanning television performance. It has cutting edge technology with its HDMI interface for HD Ready TV sets. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video connection between any audio/video source (like a cable box, DVD player, receiver, etc.) and allows for the crispest image quality of high-definition content. HDMI provides standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. HDMI provides a superior, uncompressed digital video and audio quality connection that is not only a better connection, but is simple to use. It replaces the maze of cables behind the entertainment center. And, what's more, the DVPNS90V offers 720p/1080i upscaling through its HDMI connection. That means you can send the video signals to your HDMI-equipped high definition television and enjoy high quality, one cable transfer simplicity. |

Next Level Digital Audio |
| Take a giant step up to a stunning new world in digital sound, beyond your old CDs, (which used Pulse Code Modulation (PCM), where music signals are converted into digital data through sampling and represented as a bit number) to the new Super Audio Compact Discs (SACD), which use Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology. Sony's stunning DSD digital sound format dramatically increases and broadens the original wave form of music, which results in music reproduction that is remarkably pure and faithful to the original music. In addition to exceptional sound, the SACD format can accommodate more than four times the information of current CDs, allowing for more detail in full two-channel stereo sound and for even more stunning 5.1 (2-front, 2-rear surround, one center channel and a subwoofer) surround sound playback, which matches so well with surround sound home theater. There's even room on these discs for visual information and graphics (limited to playlists and graphics information). SACD will change the way you listen to music, because it broadens and deepens the listening sound stage as dramatically as compact discs did 20 years ago. With this affordable new player, there's no better time than the present to begin your next music format change. |

A Cinematic Experience |
| You've probably seen it hundreds of times at the beginning of videos. Somewhere in between the FBI warning and the parade of logos, roaring lions and the like, is the message that tells you the video you are about to watch has been formatted to fit your screen. Movie screens are different dimensions than TV screens, so some adjustments to the shape of the picture have to be made, but that is only a portion of the conversion process required to display a movie made for the big screen on your TV screen. The greatest difficulty in the conversion process arises from the difference in the way moving images are created on film as opposed to video. In the past, converting from film to video had a tendency to create annoying side effects like dot crawl, but Sony has incorporated technology into this DVD player, like full Reverse 3-2 Conversion, that effectively eliminate distracting conversion side effects. To further improve your image quality, the conversion from one system to the other (interlaced to progressive) is done pixel by pixel. Its that kind of attention to detail that makes a difference you can see. |
No More Noise |
| One characteristic limitation of DVD's MPEG-2 compression system is "block noise." This is the tendency of delicately shaded picture areas to be rendered as solid rectangles of color. Instead of a continuous contour of color fading softly into shadow on the cheek of an actress, you see subtle blocks of approximately correct color. Block noise is most apparent along the vertical edges where the blocks meet. Sony controls this problem on the vertical axis with Block Noise Reduction. Because the player knows where the clock borders are, it identifies and suppresses block noise. The result is an even smoother, more delicately shaded, more lifelike image for a totally engaging home theater experience. |

Why Sony Rules DVD |
| It's no accident that Sony is the leader in DVD players. After all, Sony co-invented the technology DVD is based upon, the Compact Disc. Sony developed the error-correction and coding technology inside every DVD disc and player and they're involved in every link of the DVD chain, from movie and music production to DVD authoring, mastering and replication. It's all reflected in the technology of every Sony DVD-Video player. Sony DVD players also have a solid reputation for their ability to track discs that are warped, dusty or otherwise less than perfect. Now they're even better. Sony's Precision Drive 3 system uses Dynamic Tilt Compensation. This improved mechanism is simpler, faster and able to correct for an even wider range of disc imperfections. Earlier generations of this technology could only compensate for warped discs by moving the entire optical block, which took time and limited the amount of correction possible. Precision Drive 3 simplifies the process by removing the lens, instead of the entire block, for a faster and more accurate error correction. Sony's leading role in disc technology is your assurance of solid, dependable performance. |

TV Virtual Surround |
| Even if you don't have surround speakers, TV Virtual Surround modes can generate a convincing surround sound effect. All modes are optimized for use with your television's built-in speakers. Choose the mode that matches your program material and situation. "Standard" mode delivers a wider "sweet spot" than earlier designs. You can sit in more locations and still hear the surround sound effect. "Wide" mode simulates the sound of multiple surround speakers, further apart, for a wider sound image. "Dynamic" is ideal for action movies, bumping up the volume of center-channel dialog for increased clarity. Finally, "Night" mode turns down the dynamic volume peaks of action scenes, making it ideal for night viewing. |
