HDMI and Upscaling Capability |
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) provides a single-cable connection for digital audio and video transfer from the DVPNC85H to your HDMI-equipped television. This handy connection eliminates the tangle of wires usually needed to connect audio and video signals to your television. The upscaling capability of the DVPNC85H reads the data on a standard DVD at 480p and maximizes the video resolution to best fit your HDMI compatible TV. This allows for you to enjoy the best in video performance while delivering digital video and audio over one simple cable. The player will output either 720p or 1080i through the HDMI connection for picture-perfect video on your HDMI-compatible HDTV. |
Precision Cinema Progressive Technology |
Many other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level. Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. The picture is more faithful to the source -- whether film or video -- because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts. |
A Conversion Experience & Overcoming Limitations |
You'll be singing the praises of Sony's dedicated 12-bit, 108MHz D/A (digital/analog) converter the first time you watch a movie on the DVPNC85H. The digital to analog converter produces several times the fine gradations in the luminance (Y) channel and twice the fine gradations in each of the color channels. So, you get beautiful rendition of colors and gray scale from the deepest black to the brightest highlights. Sony DVD players have a solid reputation for their ability to play discs that are warped, dusty or otherwise less than perfect. Now, with the Precision Drive 3 system, Sony players can track even better. Past generations of Precision Drive were only able to compensate for warped discs by moving the entire optical block, which took more time and limited the amount of correction possible. Sony's new Precision Drive 3 system simplifies the process by moving the lens (instead of the entire optical block) for faster and more accurate error correction. |
Disc Compatibility |
Produced DVD movies aren't all you'll enjoy on this player. This 5-disc changer also accepts DVD-RW/-R (VR and Video Mode) and DVD+RW/+R discs, so you'll be ready when the relatives start sending you their homemade DVD movies from the family reunion. And, when your eyes are worn out, you can listen to your CD-R/RW discs. Playing MP3 music on the DVPNC85H is also easy. Just insert an MP3-encoded disc and press MENU. A blue screen pops up to display your folders. Scroll down the list using the remote or front panel cursor control to select the folder you want. The green files screen pops up to show the files in the selected folder. Select the file you want to hear and you're done. The DVPNC85H even lets you view JPEG images that are saved onto disc on your television screen. |
This Machine Remembers |
The world doesn't stop just because you want to watch a movie. That's why we have "pause" buttons. Sometimes you need more than a brief pause and when you do make it back to your movie, you don't remember where you left off. The multi-disc resume feature in the DVPNC85H stores the point where you stopped the disc (for up to 6 discs) and resumes playback at that point the next time you put the disc in your player. |
Virtually Surrounded |
Even if you don't have surround speakers, TV Virtual Surround modes can generate a convincing surround sound effect. You can choose from several different modes that match your program material and situation. These sound modes are all optimized for use with your television's built-in speakers, providing realistic surround sound through advanced audio processing. |
