This just in! Elevate your DVD experience |
| February 19, 2008 may have spelled the end for HD DVD on that day, Toshiba announced that it would no longer develop, manufacturer, or market this hi-def video format but it's not the end for HD DVD players. In fact, it's a new day for your DVD library. While you can enjoy any HD DVD titles released before this announcement, you can also see your standard DVDs like never before with an HD DVD player. How, you might ask? One word: upconversion. Your DVD collection delivers lower-resolution (480i) video content while your huge flat-panel HDTV is capable of displaying a high-definition 1080i or 1080p resolution. Video upconversion enhances lower-resolution video content, by means of a technique known as interpolation, so that it displays at high-definition on your HDTV. So, investing in a DVD-S1800 HD DVD player means investing in better performance from the media you already have. |

Excellence doesn't just happen |
| Offering everything from the latest 1080p video output to superb HiFi analog reproduction achieved by thorough attention to detail, this universal DVD-Audio/Video and SACD player will become the centerpiece of your home theater. Designed and constructed for superior quality, the DVDS1800BL is not just another DVD player. Every aspect of the circuit design, parts, and even chassis were planned extensively with a view to achieving truly superior sound quality in the finest Yamaha tradition, based on analog HiFi sound. This unit was developed not only as a player for DVD movies, but also as a component to deliver extraordinary music performance. |

High-octane audio |
| This Yamaha DVDS1800BL delivers supercharged audio in the form of both DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD. DVD-Audio is an extension of the highly popular DVD format, distinguished by its capability to deliver high quality multichannel audio capability previously unavailable in traditional packaged audio media. DVD players that support SACD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100 kHz and a dynamic range over 120 dB across the audible frequency range--some 64 times higher resolution then CD--SACD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just can't hear on a normal CD. And to bring out the full potential of these and other multichannel audio sources, high performance 192 kHz/24-bit audio DACs are used, while the audio circuitry is designed for highest sound quality, using high performance capacitors and other parts and painstakingly tuned by technicians who are obsessed with achieving the most natural sound possible. |

Best-of-the-best technologies |
| HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first and only digital interface to combine uncompressed high definition video, multichannel audio, and intelligent format and command data in a single digital interface. HDMI (v1.1) output allows the DVDS1800BL to transfer digital video and audio signals directly to an HDMI-equipped monitor or projector, instead of having to convert them to analog. 1080p video signals can be output, providing the most detailed high definition picture quality currently available. 480p, 720p, and 1080i video input signals are upconverted to 1080p for output. Invented and patented by Faroudja, DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing), virtually eliminates jagged oblique lines that appear when standard interlaced video is viewed on progressive scan displays, enabling the reproduction of beautiful, natural-looking moving images. NVS (Noise Shaded Video) technology, from Analog Devices, uses oversampling and advanced techniques such as multibit sigma-delta processing and bitshuffling to improve converter performance by moving converter noise to an area of the spectrum where it can be removed by an analog filter. (Got that? There'll be a quiz later.) This improves the accuracy of signal representation, allowing images to be displayed at much higher resolutions. |

MP3 for your eyes |
| DivX is the video compression codec developed by DivX Networks and based on the MPEG-4 compression format. Its balance of high video quality and low bit rate has made it very popular and quickly established it as the best home video format thus far. The ability to play it on newer DVD models continues to add to its popularity as DivX Networks advances its support to many new household products. This compression technology has the potential for expanding the ways people view video media in much the way MP3 has given us many new ways to listen to music. |

Not your average DVD player |
| The DVDS1800BL provides Bass Management processing and a subwoofer/bass management output terminal. Bass management is important for DVD-Audio and SACD multichannel playback, as it properly routes the bass frequencies for the best performance from a multispeaker home theater system. With normal 2-channel (stereo) CDs, the bass frequencies are routed to the subwoofer, so you can enjoy 2.1-channel sound with more powerful bass. Selecting the Audio Direct mode cuts the video circuitry out of the signal path, so there is no chance of it affecting the sound quality. The front panel illumination is also turned off to prevent noise interference from the LCD. Three modes can be selected for optimum viewing on widescreen monitors via HDMI output: Non-Linear Stretch, Pillar Box, and Zoom. Non-Linear Stretch helps minimize distortion of a 4:3 picture by trimming the top and bottom to make it closer to a 16:9 picture. The on-screen display with GUI (Graphical User Interface) makes operating this player extremely simple by displaying a variety of clearly understandable GUI menus right on the TV or monitor screen. It's easy to select and adjust any desired function with the remote control. This is such an attractive component that you'll probably want to add it to your custom installed home theater. If so, the DVDS1800BL is ready with an RS-232C interface so the player can be controlled via computer in a custom installation. |

Sound philosophy |
| Yamaha's involvement with sound began with the production of their first reed organ in 1887. Shortly thereafter, they began making pianos and other instruments, and today they are the world's largest producer of musical instruments. They also operate a worldwide music school, design concert halls, and produce innovative electronic instruments. Yamaha knows you want to enjoy your music and movies with the highest quality sound possible. That's why they have such a strong commitment to providing Natural Sound from every single product they make. But they also realize that today's active, mobile lifestyles, where everyone in the family has their own music and video sources, require a wider range of product choices. So they are continually expanding their product line to give you more ways to access your entertainment, the DVDS1800BL being a shining example of this philosophy. |

Don't forget the cables |
| If you are using an HD DVD player, a receiver, or anything else that is capable of sending a high definition signal, don't forget to purchase the right cables. Many people don't realize what a significant difference the right cables make, and when they get their new high definition equipment home, they think the equipment itself is to blame when the picture isn't as good as it should be. This happens because most components (HD-DVD, Blu-ray, receivers, etc) don't come with cables, so people often use whatever they have around the house, or buy cheap cables, thinking "it will do." Another reason people don't buy the right cables is because trying to figure out which cables you need can be daunting, and it?s hard to know where to start. Our sales representatives are there to explain all your options, so you can make the best purchase and get the most out of your DVD player. |
