Get it together!
Today, we enjoy entertainment from a wide variety of sources. You can get your favorite flicks in Full HD video and HD audio on Blu-ray Discs, plus those discs let you use BD-Live to access even more entertainment, you've still got those stacks of DVDs, and quite a few MP3s on your computer plus a couple dozen CDs from the pre-digital era. But, you can also go on YouTube to show all your friends The Evolution of Dance, listen to Slacker Radio to get your own custom radio station, or even stream many Netflix movies. But the problem is that those media sources aren't usually all in the same place. Then again, what if they were? With the Sony BDP-N460 you get all that and more in one "simple" component. This Blu-ray Disc player also supports CDs, DVDs, and two USB input sources. But, on the back panel, an ethernet connection allows you to access content from over 25 different providers, including Netflix, Slacker, and YouTube. It's all the entertainment you can handle in one sleek package.
The colors of the rainbow
So . . . you may be wondering what's different about Blu-ray Discs as opposed to standard DVDs or even CDs. And really, the difference all comes down to color. Do you remember learning in science class that different colors have different wavelengths? That's what matters here. DVDs (and CDs) are written and read using a wide red beam of light, whereas Blu-ray uses a much narrower blue-violet laser for reading and writing discs. Because the beam is so much narrower, a lot more info can be stored on the same disc, because it can be placed closer together. How much more? Try: more than five times more. The benefits of all that extra space will soon become apparent . . .
Sacrifice no more
In case you haven't ever seen the benefits of Blu-ray Discs, here's what your missing out on: 1080p. This refers to the picture resolution. You see here, all video content is really made of tiny squares of color, arranged in a grid of horizontal and vertical lines. All together that forms the images you see. Normal TV and DVD movies have resolutions of 720 lines horizontally by 480 lines vertically. This is known as 480, since the resolution is determined by the vertical line count. 1080p, also known as Full HD has a resolution of 1920 lines across by 1080 lines vertically. That might not sound like much more, but if you do the math, that's almost six times as many pixels, which gives you six times as much detail. Six times clearer! That's a lot! But that's only half the equation. The "p" in "1080p" stands for "progressively-scanned." DVDs and TV are 480i for "interlaced." Progressive scanning provides much better picture than interlaced, especially with much motion in the video (for a full explanation of why, please see our articles). Luckily, Blu-ray Discs are able to store 1080p video, which is the best available now. DVDs can't. One note though: to fully benefit from 1080p video, you need a 1080p HDTV and an HDMI cable. You can display the video on a lower-resolution screen, or with a different cable, but it would have to be downconverted, so it probably wouldn't look any better than a normal DVD.
The other half
But video is not the only thing that benefits from the extra room on Blu-ray Discs. No only do you get Full HD video for your favorite movies, you also get HD audio. HD audio? Seriously. Blu-ray Discs also have the capacity to store full 7.1-channel uncompressed audio. That's quite a bit better than the 5.1-channel compressed audio found on DVDs. The BDP-N460 supports these HD audio formats, with decoding and bitstream output for both Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio, so you can have the sound handled by the Blu-ray player or by your receiver. If you've got a good speaker set-up, you'll get all the sounds the director wanted you to hear.
You want more?
So you have your favorite movie. You've watched it dozens of times, watched with every commentary possible, viewed every deleted scene, watched all the bloopers, and even watched it in Spanish just for fun. What now? With a DVD, more of the same. But that's not the case with Blu-ray. You see, Blu-ray is actually a more interactive experience, since Blu-ray Discs let you access BD-Live. Here's how it works: hook your Blu-ray player up to the internet, then plug a USB flash drive into the port on your Blu-ray player, and you can download additional content to go along with your movie experience. What sort of content, you ask? It could be anything from games, to picture-in-picture video commentary, to trivia, even to interacting with other people through BD-Live.
One cable to rule them all
In order to transmit the Full HD video and HD audio found on Blu-ray discs, or the BD-Live content you can download, you need an HDMI cable. That's right, only one cable to carry your audio and video. HDMI is the only cable with enough bandwidth (think of it as the amount of data it can transfer at any one time) to transfer the large amounts of data that make up Blu-ray audio and video. So don't forget to order an HDMI cable with your BDP-N460 to fully enjoy the Full HD video and audio from Blu-ray discs.
What's in the box?
Your purchase includes an A/V cable, two AA batteries, an AC cable, owner's manual, a remote control, a warranty card, and, oh yeah, the BDP-N460 Blu-ray player.

Very pleased with the product, the speed it was delivered, and the quality of the item detail before purchase to know Im truly getting what I paid for. Excellent color for any DVD played and even better sound quality through my HDMI for my CDs. The ease of setting everything up was a nice surprise as I had recently been moving and didnt have the will-power to jump any great hurdles for setting up anything. I am very pleased with the product and believe it will look even better with a new full 1080p tv. More excitement and orders from Vanns to come...

I researched this item through Consumer Reports and selected Vanns because of their lowest price. And their shipping was quick! A side note, it was fun to mention Vanns to my mom who lived in the Missoula area for about 8 or so years! She was very familiar with Vanns commitment to quality and low prices.

I read some reviews saying its streaming capability was sub par. I found this not to be the case. I have only had one movie out of probably 2 dozen so far where I had a hiccup in the playback. I dont think it was the players fault but most likely my connection. Only con to this machine is the remote, I wish it had disc eject & channel updown. Other than that... so far perfect.

I thought I was getting the newer version of this player, but not my bad.
Its not a bad player but the internet content providers are not selectable and you do not get Pandora Radio and others with the older models.
Called Sony and the tech said there was no firm ware up grade to add any other providers to the units list.
WHY so restricted ???? does not say much for Sony, should be able to search and add content providers as you wish.
Oh and you cannot play your own video from your thumb drive on this looser either.
Sony used to be a good company when Trinitron was all the rage but no longer impresses me.
Dont buy the older model of any of there Blu-Ray players.
One good note Picture and sound quality is good, something right!!!
Matter of fact do your homework well before buying your Blu-Ray dont let brand names fool you.

I purchased the Sony BDP-N460 more for the Network side than for the Blue Ray Player since our HDTV is only 1080I. The player was easy to install, connect and setup to the network. Netflix was simple to activate following the directions at the Sony Registration page and Netflix web site. Our internet access is only 1.5 Meg, but the Netflix streamed movies provided a very good video and sound quality . If you want HD and Dolby Digital you would need a faster internet connection. Slacker Radio works fine with nice audio quality. I would like to see Pandora added.
The DVD player has a nice look with a hidden DVD tray. The video quality is excellent with standard DVDs. I have not tried a Blue Ray Disk, although as I mentioned our TV is not 1080P.

The ability to play Netflix was what helped me choose this player over others in the same price range. After a quick set up with a computer, I was watching netflix directly to my TV. A good selection of audio playback and quiet operation make this a great player for me.

I hadnt bought a Blu Ray player yet because i was waiting for the prices to come down. The best Bly Ray value used to be a PS3. I didnt want a game console so I waited. When I saw this unit, I was ready to pull the trigger.
It was pretty easy to get going right out of teh box. We have it hooked to a Sony Bravia 46 TV, so the TV remote will work for both the TV and this player. Blu Ray discs look stunning and the sound is dramatically better than DVD audio, with a noticably broader dynamic range.
DVD upscaling is pretty good too. -not as crisp as a Blu Ray disc, but better than the upscaling on the Samsung DVD player we were using before.
The setup of the Netflix account took a little running back and forth between the TV and the PC because you have to enter a code online to get the TV to log you in automatically every time. But now that its done, Netflix comes up great, and plays pretty nicely.
Instead of buying a separate wireless adapter, we decided to run a long CAT-5 cable from my router to theis device. We get very smooth streaming on a 3Meg Verizon DSL service. Streaming picture is somewhere between the quality of VHS and DVD. Not fabulous, but fairly good.
There are also a bunch of other free Internet video feeds, including Youtube. The big disappointment is the absence of Hulu. But its also blocked from our sons Playstation browser. Would have been nice.
Overall, a really good value for the money. I recommend this unit, and the great service from Vanns

Overall, were happy with the performance, especially the NetFlix streaming. We have yet to really put the HD to test on a larger screen. We currently have a 28 Samsung HD TV and will soon buy a much larger screen to take better advantage of the HD.
For us, we no longer have any need for cable or satellite TV. Everything we want to watch is available on NetFlix andor Blu Ray for far less money. Eventually, it would be nice to see Sony and other companies cut some deals directly with HBO, Showtime, and others, to feature them on their players as an optional service.
I was really disappointed to learn that the player DOES NOT offer Pandora streaming audio. I just assumed that it did when I bought it. Otherwise I would have bought a different model. I took away one star for this, although I should have checked more closely before I bought this model.
Not sure if Sony plans on adding Pandora to this model. Currently, it offers Slacker streaming audio. I suppose Ill try Slacker and see how it compares.

This is not the latest and greatest with all the gizmos. This is truly a KISS Keep it simple and stupid principle machine that does exactly as advertised. I am completely satisfied with this and the many purchases and dealings I have made from Vanns.

I bought this unit for the internet so my family can watch Netflix on our tv. So far I am impressed with the quality and performance of this Sony DVD player. It is also my first Blu-ray and man it is cool. When it first came out I told my wife I would never buy one and that it would be a waste of money. Little did I know how cool it really is. My regular DVDs even look better and watching this on my LCD TV makes it Heavenly! The Netflix is fun to watch anythime I want! Goodbye Blockbuster! If you get Netfix, make sure your internet connection is at least up to 6 Mbps, this way you can watch anything without any pausing. We watch movies all the time now without any problems! Highly reccomend buying this Sony. You will have lots of fun with it!

I recently purchased this item from Vanns referred to by Amazon. The item arrived in time with all the accessories. It took no time to connect it to the Internet and start watching YouTube and Netflix streamed videos. The registration process required having a computer to log into the Sony website went smoothly after a minor hick up - less than an hour including reading through the on screen instructions on TV as well as the computer. While we were able to see a list of Netflix movies available for Instantly Viewing on the TV screen, the list initially did not appear to match our DVD queue on Netflix. Once I changed the list of View Instantly movies on another Netflix screen, the Sony Blue Ray list synchronized with it within a couple of minutes and we were ready to go. Text entry from the small TV remote control keypad for doing Internet searches of the media content is a little slow. I am hoping that with practice I will become faster.
For the price, the product looks and works great using our cable Internet service!

Sony products are like every other sony products. They share the same control manual for their PS3, TVs, and other electronics. If you are fine with it, and you will soon find this BD easy to use.
The quality of the BD playing is good for the price range. However, the DVD conversion quality is just ok when playing.
Netflix has no problem with the flickering or anything that others mentioned about. It usually has to do with the connection of your home, not the player itself.
Overall this is a solid BD player for this price.

The Sony BDP-N460 offers fast and excellent Blu-Ray disc playback and a reliable network connection for viewing media from the websites such as Dailymotion, Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, and Netflix. Finding what you want to see on YouTube, however, is hardly straightforward, and I gave up and resorted to watching on my PC. The implementation of Neflix is way too basic, and doesnt offer the slicker interface of the XBox 360 version with its iTunes-like scrolling and ability to browse different categories. Still, the video quality of streaming videos is decent, though hardly qualifies as HD. That, however, may improve with Internet connections faster than the 3 Mbps that I have. Overall, its a good buy.

I bought this player because of its ability to stream Netflix movies. I read other reviews in other sites that complain about the quality of the streaming but I didnt have any issues with it and quality is very good.
I like the way Sony displays the movies on your Netflix queue on a matrix, that way you can see more of them at a time compared to the Roku player.
The player lacks a feature to stream from a local PC or media server some of the competitor products support that.
SONY also provides several other streaming channels eg, YouTube, DailyMotion, to name a few. The quality in YouTube is not impressive.
Id also like to have the ability to disable some channels if I consider the content inappropriate for my familiy, for example
Overall, Im satisfied with the purchase and I recommend that you review the features it offers and see how it matches your needs.

The info supplied indicated that it had a USB port and was internet ready. I had a spare USB wireless receiver so I thought I would be ready to go. Not so, the USB port is a limited use port. Since I didnt want cables running through my house, I ordered a wireless bridge. Still waiting for that to arrive.

It takes about 5 seconds to load up and does make a couple sounds during that time, but nothing major. Setup was a breeze just plug everything in and follow the instructions. It did require an update when first connecting to the internet, but it took no more than 10 minutes.
The Netflix streaming is great! You must have a Netflix account and all you have to do is put in a 4 digit code provided by the player into your online account. No need to type in your username and password on the player. I havent spent too much time on the other channels available, but from what Ive seen they work just fine and are easy to use.
I have owned the product for a week now and have used it every night. So far, I am very satisfied. Only things I would want in addition is access to stream Hulu.com which I do not think is available on ANY player at this time and wifi yet I can buy an adapter for Wifi later down the road.

This is my second Blu-ray player. The Sony BDP-N460 does an excellent job on displaying blu-ray DVDs and especially on upconverting standard DVDs. I was not happy to see that the remote does not have an openclose button. While I really like the player overall, it is kind of slow in response time. It takes a while to turn on before the tray will open. Then it takes longer than I would expect to load and start playing the DVD. These negatives are not real important to me, but another buyer out there might want a player with faster mechanical response time given that other factors they are comparing to are equal to this Sony player.

A great Blu-Ray player loaded with the features I was looking for. I was looking for a cheaper alternative to my PS3 being my main component. Just trying to cut down on the wear and tear on my overly expensive 1st release PS3. This Unit takes the cake. Nice Sony menu interface with tons of online content for your viewing and listening especially Netflix, Amazon and You Tube. Amazon on demand is very nice with alot of new release HD movies to buy or rent. I only have 1 complaint so far and it is nitpicking. The remote does not have a eject button and I cant figure out how to get the eject button feature on my Logitech Harmony One remote.

We bought this for our bedroom for the Netflix capability and have loved it. Streaming video, blurays and DVD upconcert all look incredible. Setup on the linksys wifi bridge took a little while, but it was worth it. One feature I have enjoyed is the auto shutoff after 30 minutes if inactivity. My wife and I fall asleep watching tv all thetime and now, we can hit the sleep timer on the tv and the player shuts off 30 min after the netflix movie ends. Hope this helps.

AWESOME!!! greatly improved startup time less than 30 seconds from my previous Sony Blu-ray player, lots of content options mostly using NetFlix right now, easy to use. Only bummer is that it is not -wireless- out of the box, I bought the Linksys WET610N Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adpater Bridge and everything worked great - simple set-up. The upscaling of DVD and the Blu-ray picture quality is stunning ... I have a Sony LCD-HD flat panel TV too, of course.

I purchased the Sony Blu-ray player about two months ago from Vanns. The ordering process was quick and easy and I received my player in a timely fashion. Use of the Sony Blu-ray player is very easy and user freindly. For someone looking for a a player with internet access this unit is the way to go. I first purtchsed the lower model, 300 series I beleive, from a local store and payed more than the 400series player I bought from Vanns. The 300 series does not allow for internet acess which is why I upgraded to this model. I am very happy with the player and Vanns. I will definitly buy from this company again.

Its compatible with Netflix and other services, but my friend has a Blu Ray with the Netflix service, and apparently the movies you can download are not recent movies that anyone would want to watch. Im sure there are some good ones, but Im not planning to use the Netflix feature at this time. I have Directv on Demand, which is the same thing but better.

Not very useful really, but it was fun watchin YouTube videos Would love it even more if it did have full access to the net browser. Sucks it doesnt come with an HDMI cable or another upgraded type of audiovisual cords, but cant really complain since it was free.

As an upconverting DVD player PLUS Blu-Ray PLUS Internet Content, I am very pleased. It plays our homemade copies very well and the picture quality in the upconversion is quite a noticeable improvement over my previous DVD. I dont have any pressing desire to use the Blu-Ray yet, but I just plugged it in today. The internet content seems like a good variety and looks good on the tube, but Ive just looked at a few channnels. I have my unit hardwired to my router but the time it takes to download some of the video is long, with long buffering periods in between on all channels. The unit also does upgrades over the internet, which is nice. The remote works well and also operates our Sony TV. All in all, we are pleased with this unit for the money paid.

Slim profile, easy to connect to TV. Synchronization with Sony XBR9 is a snap. Easy to connect to internet and setup Netflix to play movies on demand. Somewhat difficult to install firmware update. Large selection of internet features, but it isnt clear how many of these are useful other than Netflix. BD feature seems like a waste of time, but all Blu-Ray playes in this price range are likely to have this. Image seems excellent, but I havent played any Blu-Ray discs yes.

Recently I returned a Memorex Blu-Ray player to another vendor and ordered the Sony BDP-N460 from Vanns. What a difference in machines!
The Memorex barely functioned, skipped repeatedly playing DVDs and had a remote that seldom worked even when held in front of the player. The Sony is miles ahead in quality and plays the Blu-Rays flawlessly. The Half Blood Prince was awesome in both sound and picture.
But the main reason I switched to the Sony was to stream Netflix. I had been piping Netflix to my HDTV from my notebook. Even hooked up to a 6mbps connection, the videos were almost unwatchable--especially any scenes with motion . The Sony plays them in DVD quality with no pauses, no jerky motion. I have it hooked up to my stereo with an optical cable for sound which makes the movies even better. There is a music channel Slacker also available which offers a number of stations with excellent audio. I m really happy with the quality of the picture and sound I can stream from the Internet.
The Sony is an easy setup with intuitive menus. This model is for a wired LAN connection, which is no problem as I already had the wires nearby.
Im very pleased with the purchase price and the quality of the machine. The delivery from Vanns was quick and free.
