9.1-megapixel black Cyber-shot point-and-shoot digital camera

Beyond point-and-shoot. Far beyond. Sony's DSC-H50/B fortifies its powerful 15x optical-zoom Carl Zeiss® lens and large 1/2.3" Super HAD™ CCD with a battalion of photographic-experience-enhancing technologies. Face Detection and Smile Shutter optimize shots that capture the human face, while Super SteadyShot® optical image stabilization eliminates blur caused by hand shake. A variety professional-level features deliver optimal manual control, while advanced auto modes let you focus on the moment, not on settings. Finally, a NightShot® Infrared System lets you capture subjects in near or totally dark conditions.

Word of the day: DSCH50/B

Defenestrate, Noun. To throw out through a window. When it comes to your assumptions about what a point-and-shoot digital camera can be, this is exactly what Sony's Cyber-shot® DSCHD50/B does. Let's start with the nitty-gritty, from your subject to you. A 31mm to 465mm (35mm equivalent) Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens with a 15x optical and 2x digital zoom capacity and Macro Mode lets you both reach out and capture distant subjects and compose intimate shots of close-up subjects. Next, an advanced 1/2.3" Super HAD™ CCD enhanced by a BIONZ™ high-speed processing engine captures your images with high sensitivity, sharp detail, and low noise. Finally, a 0.2" ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) viewfinder is ideal for composing sophisticated shots, while a large tiltable 3.0" LCD viewscreen is great for composing shots as well as viewing, sharing, and editing your photos right on the camera.

Hey, you look familiar . . . Face Detection, Smile Shutter technology

These days, "point-and-shoot" is synonymous "spontaneous moments with friends and family". Making sure that that the faces of your friends and family members are clear and lifelike in every shot you take, the DSCH50/B features two technologies that optimize camera settings when your shot includes faces. First, when a human face is detected in a frame, Face Detection technology automatically controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to help reveal faces in low-light or shadows, make skin tones look more natural, reduce red-eye, and eliminate harsh facial glare in bright conditions. Second, Smile Shutter technology captures smiles the moment they happen. This mode can be set to snap a shot when your subject laughs, smiles, or even grins, and like Face Detection is able to differentiate children and adults to set priority.

Optical image stabilization

Maybe it won't be so bad. Even as a seasoned photographer, covering this year's Polar Bear Dip from a participant's point of view is a trying feat. Your jaw chatters and chills run along all your extremities at even the thought of it. You know that keeping your cool (pun intended) and avoiding shaky hands that might blur the shot will be almost impossible. Good thing your new DSCH50/B from Sony features Super SteadyShot® optical image stabilization. A built-in gyro sensor detects irregular or erratic camera movement and sends correction signals to a stabilization lens, keeping each shot steady and eliminating the need to crop in on shots to reduce blur. Further, Super SteadyShot technology combines with super-high ISO sensitivity (up to ISO 3200) to deliver enhanced shot stabilization and flash-free shooting that preserves the ambience and mood of a scene.

Professional performance

Taking your shutter-bugging experience beyond the realm of conventional point-and-shoot cameras, Sony has designed the DSCH50/B with a series of professional-level performance features. First, Bracket Shooting combines standard exposure bracketing with white balance and color modes, snapping three images at a time, each with slightly different settings, guaranteeing that you capture the perfect shot. Second, for capturing high-speed action sequences, Burst mode lets you fire off 100 shots automatically at 0.64-second intervals. Third, assisting you in creating engaging, off-center-subject photos, a 9-Point Auto Focus mode measures auto focus at nine precision position, instead of the standard five, delivering greater compositional freedom. Finally, with a wheel dial for manual exposure modes, you have access to fast, simple control over a variety of essential functions, including shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focus area, and exposure value.

The NightShot® Infrared System

There's really no reason to be embarrassed. Recent research now indicates that a large number of adults continue to believe in or fear the presence of monsters under their beds. A 2005 study conducted by Bates and Samuels adds that the majority of such monster-fearing adults also agree that these creatures only reside beneath one's bed during the nighttime hours, and are completely invisible in both natural and artificial light. Because of the former characteristic, it has been, until now, impossible to document the existence of these beings. Until now. With Sony's NightShot® Infrared System, the DSCH50/B allows you to shoot photos in near-dark or totally dark conditions without using a flash. Now the world will see — they're really under there! (Also, a related investigation conducted by Young, Erikson, Thompson, and Irvings (2006) reveals that a significant number of persons firmly believe in the existence of sasquatch. Consumers are eagerly awaiting Reclusive-Simian Capture Mode.)

Worry about the shot, not the settings

The high level of manual control offered by the DSCH50 B is great when you're out to capture aesthetic, sophisticated shots, but often it's more important that you're a part of the moment. In those cases, there just isn't time to fiddle with exposure settings. Ta-da! The DSCH50/B features a variety of shooting modes that optimize all your shots for you, given different conditions. Standard scene-selection modes include Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Landscape, Portrait, Snow, High Sensitivity, Fireworks, and Beach. For advanced performance when shooting fast-moving subjects, look to Advanced Sports Shooting mode. For optimal auto shooting, use Intelligent Scene Recognition mode. This feature automatically detects five types of scenes and selects the appropriate camera settings.

Don't fill limited to still shots

This point-and-shoot has a trick up its sleeve . . . Video! Use the DSCH50/B's MPEG Movie VX Fine mode to capture 640 x 480 VGA audio/video clips at a frame rate up to 30fps. The camera's optical zoom is available while operating in video mode, and the maximum length of time you can shoot continuously is 10 minutes.

Two memory options

When it comes to storing your photos and video shorts, the DSC-H50 B offers you two choices. First, 15MB of built-in internal flash memory give you ample memory space to capture the shot when you've forgotten your memory card. Any shots recorded to the built-in memory can be easily transferred to a PC or Memory Stick DUO™ media. Second, the DSC-H50 B features a built-in slot supporting optional Memory Stick DUO or Memory Stick PRO DUO media. This compact, high-capacity storage media makes it easy to upload images to your PC, and is compatible with a wide variety of electronic devices. Enjoy the versatility of Sony DSC-H50 memory.

Chemistry 101 — Your DSCH50/B's ionic battery

Because your new Sony DSC-H50 B digital camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, it brings you more than just incredible power. First, because lithium has the third lightest atomic mass of any element, lithium-ion batteries are some of the lightest batteries available. Second, Lithium-ion batteries have a lower loss-of-charge rate overall in comparison with other battery types and they do not suffer from 'memory loss' or a decline in total energy capacity. The lithium-ion battery featured on your DSC-H50 B brings you light-weight, long-lasting and reliable power for your digital photography needs.

Included with purchase
