8.2-Megapixel Canon CMOS Sensor
Canon's 8.2-megapixel CMOS sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range. With an incredibly wide dynamic range, the EOS 30D captures tremendous breadth of highlight and shadow detail and has been refined to accommodate the EOS 30D's extended ISO range. The advantage of Canon's CMOS sensor is significant: images are captured with silky-smooth resolution, stunning detail and sharpness. Long exposures and other shooting situations that generally produce digital noise are kept in check through the EOS 30D's enhanced noise reduction algorithms, eliminating graininess and ensuring that every image is clear. This second-generation, single plate APS-C size sensor (22.5 x 15.0mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF lens focal length.
DIGIC II Image Processor
The driving force behind the EOS 30D's CMOS sensor is Canon's exclusive DIGIC II Image Processor, which has been enhanced for across-the-board improvements in processing speed, image quality and color rendition. The DIGIC II processes and converts light information captured by the CMOS sensor into images of exceptional clarity and resolution. Photographers can expect precise, natural colors and spot-on white balance in any number of lighting situations. Through sophisticated signal processing algorithms, the DIGIC II Image Processor in the 30D accelerates all aspects of image capture and consumes less battery power than its predecessor, the EOS 20D.
Extensive ISO Range
The EOS 30D has an extensive ISO range from 100 to 1600 plus ISO 3200 in extended mode. ISO values are selectable in 1/3-stop increments and are not only displayed on the camera's top display, but also in the viewfinder. The 30D's CMOS sensor features a set of narrow-gap microlenses and noise reduction circuits to improve performance at high ISO speeds, eliminating blown-out highlights. With optimized photodiode configurations, performance is superb at every ISO value. This results in larger, clearer, sharper and more detailed photographs right from the start. The bottom line is industry-leading image quality at high ISO values and a camera that even the most critical photographers can use with confidence in low-light situations.
Image Compression Options
When shooting photos with the EOS 30D, you can select from three image compression options: RAW, JPEG or RAW + JPEG simultaneously. The JPEG copmression method is ideal for situations that require reduced file sizes; there are six selectable setting for JPEG image quality. Canon's RAW image setting, on the other hand, employs loss-less compression, ensuring the highest image quality. RAW images can potentially capture even greater detail in highlights and shadows and can be processed into either 8 bits or expanded 16 bits per channel finished files. For both JPEG and RAW image, there's a choice of standard sRGB or expanded Adobe RGB color space. With previous Digital EOS camera models, a new folder was created every 100 images, but to simplify image organization, EOS 30D folders hold up to 9,999 images. Since photographers can manually reset file numbers to automatically create a new folder, images from a particular shoot can be stored together.
Continuous Shooting
The EOS 30D has been designed to capture images with a level of speed and precision that had been reserved for the top professional cameras. Whether it's the 0.15-second startup time (the fastest EOS SLR), the high-speed mirror drive, the predictive AF focusing at speeds selectable from 3 or 5 frames per second or the nearly imperceptible shutter-release lag time, the EOS 30D will amaze and delight photographers who don't wnat to wait for their camera. A top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. and flash sync at 1/250 sec. ensure that the camera won't miss the action. The EOS 30D's CMOS sensor allows 4-channel, high-speed data processing, enabling continuous shooting for up to 30 JPEG frames, 11 RAW frames and 9 simultaneous JPEG + RAW frames in a burst at 5 fps. Fast buffer clearing times allow for quick storage of images to memory cards, so it is easy to stay in the action.
9-Point Wide Field-of-View AF
The EOS 30D has a newly developed, high-precision 9-point AF system for fast and accurate focusing in any situation. Conveniently located on the back of the camera for thumb-controlled action, Canon's ergonomic multi-controller allows you to instantly choose any of the 9 focusing points or direct the camera to choose them automatically. Focusing points are positioned in the viewfinder in a wide, diamond-shaped array, allowing the user to achieve focus quickly in numerous compositions and situations. The 30D's AF also features a dual-precision cross-type center AF point. When lenses f/2.8 or faster are used, an extra pair of line sensors are activated for greater precision and accuracy. With One-Shot AF, focus is locked once you press the shutter button halfway, which is optimal for stills, and AI Servo Predictive AF tracks moving subjects to ensure perfect focus the instant you take the picture. AI Focus AF switches between One-Shot and AI Servo depending on whether a subject is stopped or in motion. For any of the AF modes or manual focus, the EOS 30D's focusing screen with a precision matte finish enables easy, bright, color-neutral viewing.
Exposure and White Balance Control
The EOS 30D's 35-zone evaluative metering system analyzes light based on each zone in the viewing area, enabling the camera to choose the overall best exposure for the entire scene. Unlike its predecessor, the EOS 30D has a spot meter that analyzes 3.5 percent of the composition. You can use exposure information from a spot meter to determine which adjustments to aperture or shutter speed are necessary for correct exposure of the entire subject, which is particularly useful for composing high-contrast shots. Center-weighted average metering calculates the entire composition, yet places emphasis on the center of the image. With partial metering, 9 percent of the image is metered. With so many metering options, photographers can always find the option they need to get great exposures. The EOS 30D also includes a number of white balance modes for further customization: Auto (3,000-7,000K), Daylight (approx. 5,200K), Shade (approx. 7,000K), Cloudy (approx. 6,000K), Tungsten (approx. 3,200K), Fluorescent (approx. 4,000K), Flash (approx. 6,000K), plus manual and user-specified color temperature from 2,000K to 10,000K. To fine-tune white balance, the EOS 30D also features white balance compensation and a number of different white balance bracketing options for spot-on color in any number of lighting situations.
Mode Dial
Fully automatic shooting modes optimize camera settings for particular shooting situations. The Image Zone modes include Full Auto (green zone), Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Sports, Night Portrait and Flash Off. The Creative Zone modes include Program AE (P) with easy-to-activate Program Shift, Shutter-Priority AE (Tv) for selecting shutter speed, Aperture-Priority AE (Av) for setting aperture, Manual and Auto Depth-of-Field, which puts everything covered by the nine AF points into sharp focus. Whether you're specifying every aspect of your shot, or want a little help from the camera, you're ensured a beautiful image.
Picture Style
One of the most notable new features being incorporated into the EOS line of digital SLRs is Canon's exclusive Picture Style technology. With Picture Style, you are essentially free to choose a variety of characteristics that simulate different film emulsions and photographic expressions. The six preset Picture Style settings and three user defined settings also allow for adjusting sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone, creating noticeable variation in the saved image. By selecting different parameters, you can ensure that your images will look exactly as you like, right out of the camera, so your images are ready for direct printing or touching up. Of course, when shooting in Picture Style, RAW files can be changed in post processing, ensuring that "mistakes" can be easily corrected after shooting. The Standard setting is the default, giving you vivid, contrasting images; usable in a wide variety of conditions. Portrait mode gives a soft texture and warmer skin tones, while Landscape delivers particularly vivid results for blue skies and green hues. Neutral matches previous EOS Digital SLRs with low contrast and slight in-camera sharpening and Faithful gives accurate reproduction of the subject's colors based on colorimetric data. Monochrome -- the EOS 30D's black and white mode -- is similar to silver halide film in black and white, and also allows filter and toning effects. User-defined (1-3) lets you apply your own sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone settings to a preset Picture Style setting. The EOS 30D also features advanced camera direct capabilities for further in-camera adjustments to images right before printing. This Canon exclusive not only saves time in post-processing, it enhances your creativity with its simplicity.
Solid, Sensible Design
One look in the 30D's bright, sharp viewfinder and it's easy to see that composing images is simple. By checking shooting information on the viewfinder, you can change settings without moving your eye away from the camera for even an instant. The EOS 30D has a brilliant 2.5-inch LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 pixels. Borrowed from Canon's professional EOS SLRs, this monitor not only displays more information, it can also be viewed from an angle up to an outstanding 170 degrees. The 30D also features an enhanced Playback mode that displays critical shot information, including an RGB histogram and even the AF frame used. Magnification to check exposure and critical focus has never been faster, and it is also easy to quickly jump from image to image in intervals of up to 100. Menus are accessed with the touch of a button and feature larger, easier to read text than previous models. The EOS 30D has a solid, substantial feel that complements its compact dimensions. The camera is constructed of a lightweight and ultra-rigid magnesium alloy. It has an improved, high-speed durable shutter unit, designed to shoot up to 100,000 exposures with a top speed of 1/8000 sec. and flash sync up to 1/250 sec. The intuitive operation of the EOS 30D's controls makes changing settings while composing pictures simple and allows for fast operation. The control dials and the multi-controller button make adjusting your exposure a breeze. With a press of the Print/Share button, images are downloaded to a printer, computer or storage device.
