Canon's New Top Dog
The Pro1 is designed for versatile, high-resolution, creative performances of the SLR cameras but with digital ease. The quality 2/3-inch, 8 megapixel CCD image sensor produces images up to 3264 x 2448 pixels in size that are very accurately colored and extremely detailed. The camera's L-series f/2.4-3.5 7x zoom lens is fastest in its class and uses an ultrasonic motor for high-speed zooming. The 14-element lens has 2 aspherical elements, one UD-glass element and one Fluorite crystal element to significantly reduce chromatic aberration (when light comes from behind a subject and distorts the contrast for a fringe effect). This very light weight, and high-image-quality-at-low-ISO camera is quite appealing.
Head Of The Class In Design
The Pro 1 features a big 2.0" LCD monitor with 235,000 pixels-the highest resolution ever in any PowerShot viewfinder. Whether you're setting up your shot or playing it back, everything is bright and clear. And it also has a power-saving mode that shuts off the viewfinder and monitor if you haven't used it after a set time. The vari-angle design lets you swivel the LCD monitor 180 degrees to the front of the camera and 270 degrees around, letting you find the best angle for a shot while keeping the image framed in the screen. With the LCD monitor, you can shoot from just about any position. The Pro 1 has a durable metal body with a black finish, a large rubber grip, and marvelously placed controls that make this camera a joy to shoot. This camera is pretty petite and it especially great for smaller hands. It's got a nice ergonomical design, a lot of thought has gone into it.
Focus With Flexibility
The PowerShot Pro 1 offers TTL (through-the-lens) continuous autofocus that constantly adjusts the focus as you frame your shot, so you're always ready for what life throws at you. This metering system uses a light-sensitive mechanism within the camera to measure exposure from image light passing through the lens. TTL viewfinders reveal exactly what the lens sees. Plus, you have a selectable focusing point and AF lock for true creative flexibility. During movie recording, you can even set the autofocus to keep everything sharp. The 7x optical zoom lens will focus as close as 4" in the macro mode, letting you fill the entire picture with a subject as small as 3" x 4". Imagine then what you can do with the macro mode that will focus as close as 1/2 inch! For those who desire even more flexibility and range, the Pro 1 accepts accessory lenses, (with an optional conversion lens adapter) including a Tele Converter Lens that extends the range of the zoom to a maximum of 300mm.
iSAPS Technology
While a DIGIC image processor speeds operation, ensures pinpoint autofocus accuracy, and takes image quality to a whole new level. The iSAPS technology (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) applies statistical analysis to dramatically improve the performance of AF (autofocus), AE (auto exposure) and AWB (auto white balance). Canon's photographic "space" is based on a huge volume of data. By analyzing the frequency and parameters at which users took photographs, Canon was able to arrive at a statistical relationship among focal length, focus distance, scene brightness, and other factors. Equipped with statistical frequencies for different combinations of these factors and advanced prediction algorithms, the A85 can optimize AF/AE/AWB settings for any given scene more rapidly and more effectively. Built on decades of Canon experience, iSAPS brings a highly natural, lifelike quality to digital images.
Shooting Flexibility For The Artist In You
Tucked away into the Pro 1 is the power of a genuine Canon 7.0x optical zoom lens, bringing distant subjects up close and personal. It combines with a quick and nimble 3.2x digital zoom to take you seamlessly all the way up to around 22x. Nine AF (auto focus) points effectively cover the picture area and the Pro 1 is intelligent enough to even select the proper focus point (or points) automatically. Or use the FlexiZone AF to freely move a single AF point around the frame. With FlexiZone AF, the position of the autofocus can be arbitrarily selected in AF mode, so that an alternate subject in a shot can be focused without altering the framing of the shot. To help you get the most from your photography, Canon gives you multiple ways to view and capture your images. The camera's exposure features include a mode dial with settings for P, Tv, Av, M, two user-adjustable custom modes. Cater to your artistic side with an array of Photo Effects including Vivid Color, Neutral Color, Low Sharpening, Sepia and Black & White. Presets can help make great shots a given. You'll find opportunities to give all the modes a try. Have fun taking great photos with Creative, Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, and Stitch Assist. There's even a movie mode that lets you make your own VGA-quality movies complete with sound, editing, and VCR-like playback. Let the camera take over in Automatic mode, or get creative in Manual.
A Natural Balance
A choice of preset white balance settings gives you natural-looking images under almost any lighting condition. There's Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H and Flash. Select the one that fits your environment. You can also create and store a custom setting by focusing on a piece of white paper under your light source. Adjusting the Pro 1 sensitivity levels to your lighting conditions is easy. That's because Canon has related these levels to the ISO film speeds you already know from traditional cameras. Simply select the sensitivity that corresponds to ISO 50, 100, 200, 400 or choose AUTO and let the camera decide for you.
Flash And Exposure
This camera is pretty fast; the shutter speeds range from 15 seconds to 1/4000, the fastest ever in a PowerShot series camera. You can select RAW or JPEG recording formats as well as standard sRGB or Adobe RGB color space and you also have the ability to adjust images for contrast, sharpness and saturation. Highly effective flash modes of the convenient pop-up flash let you turn the flash and Auto Red-Eye Reduction on or off in any combination. In addition, with the sync-terminals at the accessory shoe, the Pro1 is compatible with all EX-series Canon Speedlites and Macro Lites and allows flash exposure compensation of up to +/- 2 stops.
Make a Movie
With the Pro 1 you can capture 640 x 480 movies with sound at 15 frames per second for up to 30 seconds per clip with superior quality sound. Movies are conveniently recorded on a high-speed CF card so they're easy to store and share. Plus, you even have the option of zooming while in the Movie mode.
