10x optical zoom with optical image stabilization

With more than 70 years of expertise in manufacturing lenses for professional broadcast and still photography, the Canon name represents optical excellence. The HV20 features a Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Zoom Lens designed specifically to capture crisp high definition video. It incorporates an aspherical lens, super spectra coating technology and a new gradation ND filter design to ensure stunning image quality, while minimizing aberration. Canon's sophisticated Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer corrects camera shake instantly to ensure steady shooting, even for hand-held video at long focal lengths and shots taken with the camera in motion as well as photos. And because it is an optical system, there is none of the degradation of image quality typical with electronic image stabilizers.

Canon True HD CMOS sensor (1920 x 1080)

Canon's expertise in designing and manufacturing CMOS image sensors for its line of EOS Digital SLR cameras is now available in the Canon HV20 HD camcorder. The 2.96 Megapixel Canon CMOS sensor captures true HD information at 1920 x 1080, giving your images the ultimate in realistic detail. Canon's advanced noise reduction technology ensures the purity of each pixel even in dim light, minimizing noise and other aberrations. It incorporates an RGB Primary Color Filter with Bayer placement to deliver a sharp HD image with vibrant and accurate color reproduction. Canon's next generation DIGIC DV II Image Processor was designed specifically for HD, with digital signal processing that ensures optimal photos as well. Color reproduction is extremely accurate across the tonal range, noise is minimized for clear, clean images, and power consumption is reduced for longer battery life.

Instant AF

Instant AF is Canon's next-generation autofocus technology. An external sensor works in combination with Canon's proven high-performance internal AF system to dramatically reduce focusing time and increase accuracy. It is especially effective when shooting at night, in high-brightness conditions or when following a moving subject. The high resolution of HD video makes focus more critical than ever, and Canon's Instant AF helps videographers capture HD images with expert precision.

True HD 1080 video and cinema effects

No matter what you're shooting, bring it vividly to life with today's premier technology. The stunning clarity of true 1080 HD resolution is evident in every frame shot by the HV20. You'll record and play back images using widely available miniDV cassette tapes. 24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring movie-makers to achieve a professional film look. You can change the camcorder's frame rate to 24p, which provides the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, you can use the HV20's CINE setting, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evoking the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together, or independently.

3.1-megapixel photos

Inside the HV20 camcorder lives a full-featured Canon digital camera, allowing you to capture stunning 3.1-megapixel photos (2048 x 1536) onto a tiny miniSD card. Just like an advanced Canon camera, the HV20 offers: 9-point AiAF (Auto Intelligent Auto Focus), Metering Modes, Shutter- and Aperture-Priority, Continuous Shooting Mode, Auto Exposure Bracketing, and a built-in flash with Red-Eye Reduction. With the Histogram Display, you can monitor the brightness of your shots, allowing you to adjust successive shots to your preference. It also features Direct Printing, making it simple, quick and convenient to produce high quality photos, just by connecting to an PictBridge compatible printer. DIGIC DVII features improved continuous shooting of digital still photographs with the HV20. You can shoot five (3.1-megapixel) still images per second, and enjoy faster processing of your images to your memory card (1.4x normal card; 2.5x Hi Speed card). It also helps lower power consumption for longer battery life.

Professional results made easy

The 2.7-inch widescreen LCD shows you exactly what you're recording. Professional results are easy for anyone. Level Shot gives you a horizontal marker for leveling, and Grid Markers for balancing the shots. A selectable Zebra Pattern (70 percent, 100 percent) identifies high-brightness portions of the image. And since high definition requires precise focus, the HV20 features two focusing aids for sharp, manual focusing. Peaking enhances the edge or outline of your subject, and Zooming enlarges your subject for better visibility.

Convenient HDMI terminal

The HV20 allows easy connection to today's latest HD televisions through its HDMI terminal. Only one cable is needed to output a pure digital signal (video and audio) for the ultimate viewing experience. There's also a USB 2.0 full speed terminal for fast transfer of your photos to your computer.

A superior feature set

A comprehensive set of well-designed features positions the HV20 as a premium quality camcorder. An Advanced Accessory Shoe lets you attach optional accessories such as a video light or directional microphone, without additional wires or batteries. For added video flexibility, the DV20 features Mic and Headphone terminals. Manual Audio Level adjustment provides professional control. The HV20 is an ideal tool for shooting in low light with the built-in Ultra Video Light. An Electronic Lens Cover automatically opens when the camcorder is turned on, and closes when it is turned off, so there is no dangling lens cover to lose. An Analog-Digital Converter lets you share the precious video memories you have stored on analog videotapes. Simply feed the analog signal from your TV, VCR or analog camcorder to your HV20 to convert the signal to digital for recording on DV tape. Or use your HV20 as a signal converter by connecting it between an analog device and another digital device.
