The YAS-101 is a unit worth looking into if your present budget is only around $250-$300, and you think that you might be able to find a good wired subwoofer in the future at a bargain price. By itself the YAS-101 is good, and with an externally wired subwooofer it is great. As a relatively inexpensive solution for our current small sized living room we are pleased. Be sure to disable the built in sub using the buttons on the front of the unit and not with the remote when installing an external subwoofer.
I do not know how the competition stacks up, but I can count on Yamaha to not dissapoint or to have short lifetime from over 25 years of listening.

Very impressive sound with the built in subwoofer, but took it to a new level by connecting a Klipsch Sub-12.
