I hope that Onkyo will not stop manufacturing this kind of entry level models. Im afraid that they might change their next same type model to become high-end level and with higher price...

I have not had much experience in sound systems for quite a while now, and things have changed. After initial attempts to get this system Onkyo HT-S3400 working correctly, and searching online for known problems with this unit, I finally contacted Onkyo for support. Problem was that I had no center speaker sound. Other than mono or all stereo options, I was hearing no voices - all the other sounds were there. I checked my connections and even reset the receiver to fix all the things that I had fiddled with in the setup function. Finally I called support and was surprised to get a real person within 1 minute. The tech took me through a process to determine the problem. Within a minute he had the problem identified and all I had to do was to clip an inch off one of the connecting wires to the center speaker and reinsert it. Bingo, we be in business. Sounds great...no complaints here!!!!

I've never owned high-end equipment, so I cannot compare this product to anything in that category. Ive only owned a home-theater in a box from panasonic a 5-disc DVD HTIB and a handful of smaller 5.1 PC sound systems.
So now that you know my background, wow, what an amazing piece of technology for $250. The sound from all of my devices rca analog, headphone stereo to rca, hdmi, and optical are all crystal clear and just superb.
Playing COD on my xbox adds a whole new level, not ever experiencing the dolby digital effect. DTS on blu-ray is simply astounding.
The audyssey eq that comes built into the receiver does its job very well. I have a baby that is asleep by 8pm and I dont watch movies or play video games until 93010pm the audyssey allows me to hear every detail without having the speakers on too loud its perfect for my needs.
Im not musically inclined, but I am technically inclined. The setup process was simple although I should note that if you plan on using component or rca video, you need seperate component outrca video out respectively. I had first thought the receiver would just send all video signals out through HDMI not so and the manual only mentions this fact in passing in a small note.

Easy on screen menu and set-up options.this Onkyo Receiver has an extra optical audio input, and the audio actually passes through the hdmi cables . Absolutely no complaints after watching a couple TV shows and listening to different types of music, everything sounds really good for the price. watching NFL games is an absolute treat. this systems got a beast of a subwoofer and bass is awesome. I have owned and set up several small to medium sized home theather systhems in the past. This time around, I just wanted something, high quality, lower cost and simple for my wife and 7 year old to run in our main family room and this did the trick. Most other receivers with this power output, features etc. are around this same prcie point, plus you get all the speakers with this system. If you want a system that will rattle your windows, go somewhere else and expect to spend 3-4 times as much. However, if you want something that will add a much richer, fuller sound to the family movie, you cant go wrong with this.

I received my Onkyo HTS3400 home theater system about 10 days ago. In preparation for its arrival, I downloaded the pdf file of the manual so I was ready to set it up immediately. It was very easy to setup and, contrary to other reviews, I found the manual comprehensive and easy to understand. I am currently using the system only as a 3.1 with the left front, middle front, right front, and subwoofer connected as I didnt want to tackle taking up wall to wall carpet for the satellite speaker wire runs. Even so, the sound is full and rich. I am thoroughly pleased with performance. Our only mishap occurred when we tried to vacuum with the TV and receiver powered off the same circuit. It tripped the breaker. Only other performance issue was using the supplied AM radio antenna. It seems incapable of picking up any AM stations. The FM antenna works well and we have enjoyed using 6 preset FM stations off the remote. A wide variety of setup controls are available and easy to adjust. I also like the wide range of equilizer maps you can cycle through off the remote TV and music buttons.

I researched for weeks for an affordable system to improve the quality of sound when watching tv and gaming, and finally settled on the Onkyo HTS3400. After reading other reviews and comparing features and cost with other systems on the market, it seemed to offer the most bang for the buck. Ive used it for about a month now, and am totally happy with my decision. The setup was very easy. This was my first experience hooking one of these up, but the directions were straightforward and everything was wired and running in about 45 minutes. It sounds amazing! Im still trying to learn about the different sound settings and menu options, but that has been the only complication Ive had. I would recommend this product to others.

Ive had this Onkyo surround sound system for almost few weeks now & its been absolutely outstanding thus far. Of course there are better sounding setups out there but youll end up paying 3 to 4 times more than the price of this fabulous Onkyo unit. This is intended to be an ENTRY LEVEL system but dont let that fool you. This thing will far surpass expectations! Setup was very simple & intuitive. I didnt even use the instructions much. I would recommend calibrating the system to fit the roomlistening position as instructed in the manual though, as this can make a significant difference in performance. I am particularly impressed with the high frequency response from the speakers. Its very crisp & clear. The low end is good as well. It has plenty of power but is somewhat lacking in tightness or punch. Build quality is also above average. Overall, I am very impressed with how great this system sounds, especially considering the price range its in. Onkyo should be applauded for offering such a high quality product at an entry level price. If you are considering purchasing this system, buy it. You wont be disappointed!

The Onkyo Home Theater System HTS3400 has surprising sound coming from what I thought would be an entry level system. This was to be a replacement system for my father in law, whos needs arent as discriminating as my own. I was pleasantly surprised when I got everything hooked up and listened to the system. Here are my observations -
1. Unit was well packaged, smaller lighter than I expected
2. Speaker wires are color coded, but a bit thin. Didnt seem to affect the sound quality too much
3. Number of inputs is limited - meets his needs, but it was tight
4. Does not upconvert - if you have composite in, you have to have composite out known, but always best to restate
5. Moderately decent levels capable before distortion creeps in. Fine for general use, but dont expect magic
6. Speakers are light, as is the subwoofer. This means you really need to adjust the levels to tweak the system a bit - easy to do, just do it
Overall, very pleased with the purchase & would recommend to anyone with a small medium sized need and on a tight budget. 150-200 sq. ft.

I am very pleased with the Onkyo system. It supplies enough power to produce clear sound I'm a little hard of hearing and the array of speakers certrainly provides a rich surround sound. My viewing area is not a particularly large room so I rather like the small footprint of the speakers. There was more than sufficient speaker wire included to wire them up, and while I am not the handiest fellow in the world, I had no trouble mounting them. It took a bit of trial and error to connect the receiver to my cable system, but once I found the right connection it has been very easy to use. I plan to acquire a Blu Ray HDMI player, so I'll be experimenting with the wiring again soon, but the directions seem clear enough that I don't anticipate much trouble.
All in all, I'm a happy viewerlistener.

I was also happy that the sub was NOT powered, that way I dont have to worry about running it to the outlet. I use this to power my home theater using a projector and this is my primary video switch.

I was leery to buy the S3400 with so few reviews out there owing to its newness.
took the gamble and thus far am ecstatic with the decision. I am now a solid Onkyo fan.
Quality was evident from the packaging and continues right through each component.
As for being unsure of the units passive sub woofer, no worries at all. The bass booms and remains crisp and distinctive through all but the most extreme volume levels and I sure dont listen to anything at full bore.
Setup was very easy and I was enjoying the clear, realistic sounds that this system delivers with ease in less than 30 minutes after unboxing it.
This is my first buying experience with Vanns and likely will not be my last. Ridiculously fast and free shippipng, very courteous phone representatives, lowest price on this unit on the internet.
Im convinced that in the low $300 price range this unit can not be touched.
