But if your ears demand better, NuForce has a solution. The Icon HDP is designed to give audiophiles the crisp, clear sound they deserve. How? Simple. Normally, if you listen to the speakers built-in to your computer, or plug your headphones into your MP3 player, the device uses cheap circuitry to convert the digital file into an analog signal (DACs). When you use the Icon HDP, the digital signal is transferred to the HDP to be converted to analog. Even though both devices are capable of the conversion, the Icon HDP is designed and built for performance, not price. For example, the DACs in this device are the same ones NuForce uses in their high-end audio devices costing well over $1000. Without going into too much detail, the rest of the internal circuitry is just as advanced. Designed to be used with headphones, the Icon HDP offers sound quality rivaling large systems costing thousands. Of course, if you'd rather, you can always connect it to powered external speakers instead with the built-in RCA pre-amp outputs. Inputs are equally flexible. In addition to the USB port, there are three input slots: one is a digital coaxial input, one is a L/R analog input, and the third is a mini-pin input that can be used for either a digital or analog signal. It's important to note, however, that only one digital, one analog, and one USB source may be used at a time. If you want better sound from your digital devices, the NuForce Icon HDP is the thing for you.
