With an HDMI platform handling 1080p video from three sources, the TXSR506 brings polish and peak performance to high definition displays and sources. Legendary Onkyo amplification drive and power set the foundation for delivering bass crunch and vocal clarity. For sharp and accurate video and audio reproduction, there's 32-bit DSP processing and 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters on all channels; and 7.1-channel surround processing for Dolby Digital EX, Dolby ProLogic IIx, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24, and DTS Neo:6. This receiver also includes a user-selectable eight-setting subwoofer crossover adjustment for ideal integration of any subwoofer/satellite speaker system. And, thanks to the latest Audyssey technologies, you get to enjoy a sweeping soundstage, even at low volumes. The HDMI you've been waiting for

The Onkyo TXSR506's three HDMI v1.3a video pass-thru inputs provide an advanced interface for transporting high definition (HD) video with Deep-Color capability including 1080p content from Blu-ray players, HD set-top boxes, and the latest generation of gaming consoles; but you'll need to use one the receiver's several connection options for multichannel audio. In addition to its three HDMI inputs, the TXSR506 includes two HD bandwidth switching component video, three S-Video, and four composite video inputs to accommodate other sources. There are a total of four digital audio inputs, as well as six analog audio inputs, 7.1-channel multichannel inputs, and powered Zone 2 outputs.

Get in the zone

The TXSR506 features Onkyo's Powered Zone 2 capability, which can be used to power stereo speakers in a second room while listening to 5.1-channel sound in the main zone thanks to a dedicated set of Zone 2 L/R speaker terminals. The receiver is capable of processing separate multichannel and stereo sources simultaneously for the main and second zone, or processing a single source for both. There's also a Zone 2 pre-out that can be used in conjunction with a dedicated zone amplifier or receiver. Finally, for those with premium biampable loudspeakers, where the bass and midrange/treble drivers are each driven by separate amplifiers, the rear surround channels can be reconfigured for this more powerful operating mode.

Iliad and Audyssey 2EQ/Dynamic EQ

With unquestionably no relation to Homer's epic poems of the Trojan War, Audyssey 2EQ automatic speaker calibration provides remarkable improvements in performance by calibrating the home theater system to its acoustical environment. With this system, the included calibration microphone is used to analyze the system's acoustical output at three unique positions in the listening area. By taking readings in two different locations in the theater room, with the microphone placed at the listening positions, the receiver sends test signals to each speaker in turn, then uses the input from the microphone to adjust channel level and time delay settings for each speaker. And, as if that weren't enough, the TXSR506 is among the first receivers ever to employ Audyssey's Dynamic EQ algorithm, which adds moment-by-moment refinement to the receiver's frequency response and surround levels in order to compensate for volume-dependent deteriorations in listening, particularly at low volume levels. When used in combination with the Audyssey 2EQ system, this feature tailors the receiver's output to correct for room acoustics, listening position, and playback-level distortions, delivering an overall experience that is a much closer match to what the audio production engineers originally intended.

Help for compressed music files

The TXSR506 is one of the first receivers to implement Onkyo's Music Optimizer technology, which improves the quality of compressed audio such as MP3 and AAC encoded digital music files. While these compressed audio formats sound quite acceptable over small headphones or PC speaker systems, when reproduced on a full-scale home theater system the loss of high-frequency information becomes much more apparent. The Music Optimizer employs sophisticated equalization and optimization algorithms to overcome these faults, and enhances the reproduction quality of digitally compressed music.

Get Big Sound From Your Little iPod

Onkyo designed this receiver to take complete advantage of the company's optional Remote Interactive (RI) iPod dock/charger units (not included). With the iPod placed in the dock, it becomes a source component for not only audio playback, but also for photography stored in iPod photo units. Basic iPod controls such as play, pause, stop, skip, and random/repeat functions can all be operated via the TXSR506's preprogrammed, RI-compatible remote control.
