HDMI version 1.4 — now you're cooking with 3D
You're probably accustomed to hearing the term "high definition" used in reference to video from sources like Blu-ray Disc. But what you might not know is that the real advantage to Blu-ray technology is the ability to encode your favorite movie soundtracks in full 7.1-channel, studio-master-quality audio. Combining a 7.1-channel, 1200W speaker system with advanced HD audio decoding technologies, Onkyo's HT-RC260 home theater reciever allows you to discover the HD audio experience. The multi-channel HD audio found on your favorite Blu-ray titles isn't just ready to be heard . . . it first has to be processed from digital form into an analog signal that can be sent to your speakers. Enter Dolby and dts processing decoding. Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio handle the 7.1-channel audio, while Dolby's Pro Logic IIz adds two height channels for a more complete audio experience. Then, a 7.1-channel speaker constellation with powered subwoofer reproduces surround sound effects and dialogue with nuance and vivid dimensionality. It isn't just surround sound, it's HD audio from Onkyo.
Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz — for a spacious new audio dimension
The HT-RC260 handles two new surround-sound technologies from Audyssey and Dolby that offer exciting new ways to set up the speakers in your home theater system. Audyssey DSX lets you incorporate "front wide" speakers, in place of the usual surround back speakers, to expand the width of the soundstage. With these extra satellites set up 60° off center, you get a more realistic soundstage and a more immersive listening experience. Alternatively, Audyssey DSX can reconfigure the HT-RC260's surround back channels to deliver "front height" channels. These channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that adds a new vertical dimension to your movies and games.
Dolby Pro Logic IIz offers the proven quality of Dolby Pro Logic IIx and adds a new vertical dimension to your home theater sound stage. As with previous versions of Dolby Pro Logic, this latest version delivers a convincing surround-sound experience from any movie or music source — even a stereo one. On the HT-RC260, Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables you to incorporate two "front height" speakers into your surround-sound set-up as an alternative to the two surround back speakers. The front height channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that helps immerse you even more deeply into your movies and games. With Dolby Pro Logic IIz, rain seems to burst from clouds right above you, and helicopters fly realistically overhead.
A full-range of the latest high-definition surround sound codes
The HT-RC260 handles Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio — two lossless decoding formats that enable delivery of a bit-for-bit soundtrack identical to the studio master track. Both codecs take advantage of the high data capacity of the Blu-ray Disc (BD) format. Another BD-related technology is DTS-HD Express, which provides access to secondary audio features. The HT-RC260 also handles two "lossy" audio formats: Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. Dolby Digital Plus is designed to accompany high-definition video delivered via disc media, broadcasts, and online content. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, meanwhile, offers a greater bit rate, a higher sampling rate, and more channels than the core DTS technology.
A suite of Audyssey technologies for the ideal listening environment
The HT-RC260 provides three Audyssey technologies to help create the most suitable listening environment for your home: 1) Audyssey 2EQ tailors multichannel audio for your home theater by correcting problems both in frequency response and in the time domain (where most of the problems lie) for a clear, precise, and natural sound; 2) Audyssey Dynamic Volume automatically controls desired listening levels for all content, and 3) Audyssey Dynamic EQ maintains a consistent bass response, solving the problem of deteriorating sound quality at lower volumes.
It doesn't matter if you can pronounce it or not . . .
What matters is that Faroudja DCDi Cinema is one of the most advanced video processing technologies around. Take, for example, the fact that it can accept any video signal — regardless of the source resolution — and upscale it to 1080p. Is it a trick? No, silly videophile, it's serious electronics engineering. And, it does a bunch of other cool stuff too, like effectively remove video artifacts, i.e. jaggies, during the video signal deinterlacing process, so you get to enjoy smooth progressive scan video images, even with fast-moving action flicks.
Finally, an on-screen display that works with you, not against you
Yes, we agree. There's nothing more annoying than trying to make video adjusts when it requires you to go to some distant blue menu land, far from the video you're trying to view. Well, Onkyo has solved this problem with their overlaid graphical on-screen display. Simply press the Home button on the remote and a semi-transparent graphical set-up menu appears overlaid on the video image you're viewing. Because, really and truly, it's the little things that matter most.
Bring on the iRevolution
Hold on just a second. Something just doesn't seem quite right. Thanks to your portable music player, you have an enormous, diverse world of music at your disposal . . . but you have to be listening to headphones to enjoy it. Well, until now, that is. With thanks to its ] iPhone/iPod dock, the HT-RC260 lets you connect your iPhone or iPod to the multi-channel audio system via the UP-A1 Dock for iPhone/iPod for instant enjoyment of all your favorite playlists. The Onkyo UP-A1 Ipod dock is sold separately and can be purchased from the accessories tab on the HT-RC260's item page.
Music optimizer and front-panel audio input
An audio input on the front panel of the HT-RC260 enables you to connect your iPod or other MP3 player directly to the system. The HT-RC260's onboard Music Optimizer technology then works to enhance the quality of your compressed digital music files by compensating for bit information lost at higher frequencies.
Because sometimes you want to listen to everything at once
Actually, it's more like, you want to watch a movie and your mate wants to listen to music. Well, quibble no more. With Powered Zone 2 and a Zone 2 line-out, you can enjoy surround-sound entertainment in the main room while you play a completely different stereo source in a second zone (room) equipped with an amplifier or a pair of speakers. See, you don't need Dr. Phil when Dr. Onkyo is on the case.
