These Features Sound Great
The Yamaha HTR5990 is a full-featured digital home theater receiver ready for all formats. It sports a couple of features that not only improve the sound quality of your system, they also make your life a little easier. With full analog video up-conversion to HDMI with TBC (Time Base Corrector), video composite, S-Video and component signals are up-converted to HDMI digital output. If you have an HDMI compatible TV/monitor, you can enjoy high picture quality from analog video signals (VCR/TV broadcasts). Component Video Up Conversion takes S-Video and composite signals and converts them into a component signal. This not only ensures the highest quality video from any source, it means you only need one connection to your HDTV monitor. No more switching inputs according to your source, with these features, it can all go through the HDMI or component video connection. The HTR5990 also has YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) which uses an optimizer microphone at the listening position to pick up test tones from your speakers, which the system then analyzes to let you know the best audio parameters. The system will even automatically equalize the sound according to the readings it takes, for the ultimate in convenience.
Other Features
Some other major features on the Yamaha HTR5990 include 7-channel discrete amplification (140W x 7), Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, 19 surround programs, 5 THX programs, SILENT CINEMA, and a Direct Access learning LCD remote control. It delivers high power to seven channels and features Yamaha's unique CINEMA DSP. The HTR5990's vitally important digital-to-analog converters use an extremely high performance 192kHz/24-bit operation type. They perform accurate sound field reproduction for high quality multichannel sources, and for two-channel stereo, provide outstanding separation and precise musical delineation. On top of all this the HTR5990 utilizes Pure Direct for high quality 2-channel and multi-channel surround reproduction, Wide-Range Audio Frequency Response for DVD-Audio/Super Audio CD Compatibility, and reproduces surround for 6.1 channels, 5.1 channels and 2.1 (virtual surround).
XM Satellite Radio Ready
The HTR5990 is XM Satellite Radio ready, allowing you to hear over 150 channels of music, news, sports, talk and entertainment from America's number one Satellite Radio service. With the addition of the XM Connect and Play digital antenna accessory (sold separately), just subscribe to XM Satellite Radio and hear radio as it was meant to be.
Inputs and Outputs
The HTR5990 offers 2 in/1 out HDMI switching, providing the most advanced method of delivering high quality video signals to a home theater system to enable the reproduction of DVD and satellite TV sources with HD quality. Compatible with the HDMI Ver. 1.1 format, it can also decode digital audio signals from sources such as DVD-Audio, CD, Dolby Digital and DTS. With optical and coaxial digital inputs, the HTR5990 can accommodate digital sources such as DVD, CD, MC/CDR, and D-TV/CBL. Optical digital outputs assure the finest possible signal leaving the receiver for your other components. The receiver incorporates component video inputs, providing outstanding video connections. You also get S-Video inputs and outputs. In addition to the wide range of inputs and outputs, the HTR5990 also includes a set of front panel A/V inputs for simple temporary connection.
DSP Me ASAP
The HTR5990 uses DSP technology to bring the most out of your music and movies. Conventional multi-channel systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using relatively simple matrix and steering techniques to create surround sound effects. Yamaha's CINEMA DSP technology is much more sophisticated. It naturally decodes the Dolby Digital and DTS movie sound formats, but it also draws on a huge memory of real-world data from actual venues (especially for the music programs) and input from movie sound technicians. This data is stored and processed on Yamaha-developed LSIs, the most powerful audio chips in the world. One of the main advantages of CINEMA DSP is the large choice of sound field programs available. The basic program for movies is Enhanced, which greatly improves the sound of the surround fields. The "largest" of these sound fields is Spectacle, which recreates the open feeling of large-scale, epic motion pictures. The Sci-Fi, Adventure and General programs provide the optimum sound fields for those movie genres. There are also 5 THX programs.
What is YPAO?
Yamaha's unique YPAO System (an integral feature of the Yamaha HTR5990 Digital Home Theater Receiver) uses a small microphone and advanced processing technology to analyze room acoustics. It then automatically adjusts various speaker parameters for optimum sound quality at the listening position. It works in only three minutes and is extremely easy to use. With YPAO, you do not have to worry about careful speaker placement and will be assured of "professionally calibrated" surround sound quality.
Night Listening Enhancer and SILENT CINEMA
During low-volume listening, such as late at night, dynamic range suffers and you may miss some sounds. The Night Listening Enhancer offers two modes, Cinema and Music, with three-level selectability, which will ensure that you don't miss movie dialogue or quiet passages, or lose overall surround spaciousness. It works for all surround programs, including Dolby Pro Logic IIx. The SILENT CINEMA mode allows private listening enjoyment of multichannel music or movies, with an accurate simulation of surround sound, through ordinary headphones.
