What's New In the AVR3808CI

The AVR-3808CI is the latest update to Denon's acclaimed three thousand series A/V receiver line. Technology advances and careful engineering has yielded a receiver with the features and functions to take it well into the future of home theater. The AVR-3808CI has joined the CI ranking with the addition of expanded connectivity including networking and Internet radio. Updated Audyssey audio processing has refined the calibration process producing better sound and room balance, even with difficult acoustical conditions. The AVR-3808CI now has HDMI v1.3a which brings with it the new surround formats for HD decoding. Portable device hookup has also been improved for ease of use.

The Power of Authority

The AVR3808CI is a real powerhouse, featuring high quality, wideband audio amplification, providing 130 watts of power output (8 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 0.05 percent THD) for each of its seven main channels. A large capacity power supply includes a high current power transformer along with discrete power output devices on all seven amplifier channels for the highest dynamic range and superb reproduction clarity. The power amp circuits of the AVR3808CI have been meticulously designed to reproduce exceptionally high sound quality with a wide frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. The AVR3808CI is equipped with a total of 7 power amps including two for the Surround Back channel speakers to give you more clearly defined sound localization at the rear for 6.1-channel surround sources such as DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, and DTS-ES NEO:6. The 32-bit floating-point DSP processor was carefully selected by Denon and supports single-instruction, multiple-data processing.

The chassis of the AVR3808CI is designed to absorb vibration, supporting its large transformer inside a highly rigid frame to secure it more solidly. In addition, a cushioning material is used around the core of the transformer to minimize interference on the signal and allow more faithful reproduction of the original sound. Also, the AVR3808CI analyzes and adjusts the frequency response of the speakers to the room with an 8 band parametric equalizer. The microphone is a specially designed, high performance unit with a heavy duty base to suppress vibrations for accurate analyzing.

Who Says You Can't Be Two Places At The Same Time

The AVR3808CI provides a Multi-Zone output function and a Select function that lets you output different sources to multiple zones. Sources can be selected for output to an additional zone, in addition to the main room. The receiver's Power Amplifier Assign function lets you assign the Surround Back amplifier channels when the system is not configured for 7.1 to instead drive the Multi-room Zone 2 speakers, while still providing 5 discrete amplifier channels to drive all speakers in a 5.1 configured home theater room. The Multi-Zone/Multi-Source function on the AVR3808CI outputs analog signals to the second zone (no digital) and there's even a Zone 2 composite video output so you can send separate video and audio to a second zone while still running 5.1 in your main room at the same time. So if you have yet to purchase a 7.1 speaker system, you may want to use this function to power speakers in your bedroom or kitchen and enjoy even more entertainment functionality for your dollar.

Movin' On Up

Component Video Conversion is an exciting feature, making setup of your A/V system easier than ever. This video transcoding technology lets you enjoy the highest picture quality from all video gear connected to the receiver. Since composite and S-video signals are converted up to component video signals and output to the monitor, all you need to do is connect a monitor that can display component video images. That means you don't have to connect different cables to your television for your DVD player, VCR, and whatever else you may want to get a signal from. If you only have two speakers, you can still be surrounded with sensational 3D soundfield envelopment. The AVR3808CI provides 5, 6, 7, and 9 channel stereo modes.

Fine Tune Your Audio

As with all of Denon's high-grade A/V receivers, the AVR3808CI lets you adjust delay times and other parameters so that you can customize the performance to suit your own home theater as well as enhance operating ease. The adjustments are easy to make on the fluorescent display on the front panel. These customized features are then stored, for each source input and surround mode, in Personal Memory Plus so constant readjustments are not required. You can also put yourself in the middle of your favorite concert hall and music envirionments with Denon's DSP acoustic environment simulation modes. These DSP modes add spacious surround sound enhancements to your favorite music and video sources, and include these distinctly different sounding effects: 7 Channel Stereo, Virtual Surround, Rock Arena, Jazz Club, Video Game, Wide Screen 7.1 Mode, Matrix and Mono Movie.

A Solid Foundation

Twin Drive Rectifier design brings out the maximum potential of this large transformer. Since the rectifiers recharge the large block capacitors at low impedance, they are able to supply ample current to accurately reproduce deep bass as well as sudden bursts of sound. A large heatsink made of extruded aluminum is placed in a design that ensures mostly uniform temperatures so that the output transistors for all channels can be driven under the same conditions. This ensures that all channels respond with equal performance to the demands of the audio signals. The aluminum face plate, in addition to looking great, also helps with the reduction of unwanted noise.
