I bought this HK-3490 to run Definitive Technology BP-20 speakers, large bi-polar speakers several years old. The HK is so powerful that Ive inadvertently blown two sets of tweeters. There is no distortion, then in a nanosecond, the tweeters are gone. So be careful about volume levels with this receiver.

I purchased this unit, being very familiar with the HK brand. I set it up with a new pair of high end Cerwin Vega speakers. I am running a high end Technics Phono, a Marantz Cd Deck, and a Yamaha SACD player. I have this all set up in a 10x20 room where I have 2 wall sized salt water aquariums. I have the speakers on the far end of the room, facing me in the far back. I kick back in a lounge chair, watch the fish, and get BLOWN AWAY by the clarity, and sheer power of this receiver. Crisp highs, smooth mids and booming bass are reproduced by this unit. Whether playing back the 2003 180 gm Dark Side of the Moon Lp, the Japanese remastered cd of sticky fingers, or an SACD copy of Peter Gabriel, the music comes alive with this superb unit. Value, ease of use, ease of set-up and the beauty of music faithfully reproduced with this FINE receiver, as part of a mid priced, nice set-up. I highly recommend this receiver to anyone, looking for 2 channel listening pleasure.!!!

I bought this reciever for the 160 watts of power and the b*tchen good looks.
I had it hookedid up in Oro Grande, CA and it powered my JBL JRX2150 2 x 15 woofers just fine. Then the unthinkable happened. Somebody broke in the stolled it and now I has to spend another 500 bucks for a new one. Well, bottom line is it sounded grate, grate, grate while I had it.
I hope the thief who stolled it is as happy as I were when I had it. Everybody should own a Harman Karden amp at one point in there life to see what QUALITY really sounds like.

I just set this amp up this weekend with a pair of powered Definitive Technology BP7002s Bi-polar with built in subwoofer I bought a couple of years ago. I had rotated a Yamaha 5.1 from my home theater when i upgraded the receiver to a 7.1 RGB connection to a Pioneer Elite 42 Plasma several years ago.
Never having the right power to push the Def Techs has proved to be a bigger mistake than I thought. Tthe power of the HK3490 makes the speakers sound incredible. I also bought the Bridge !! for the iPod Nano so i could listen to digital music on a system rather than earphones.
The room I keep the HK3490 is for music only. I have guitars, microphones and two amplifiers for live music playing with a few friends of mine. in addition to the iPod, I have a DVD so now I can view and listen to live concerts and play my favorite playlists from the iPod. The 2 channel sound is the right choice for my use, and the power of the high current amp drives the Def Techs like I have never heard. If you like loud with no distortion, and i mean none, than this combibation is incredible.

A week after I bought the HK3490 I saw that it had been reduced further, so why didnt I wait another week? Oh well. That said, the receiver performs beautifully, excellent, clean tone, high to low, soft or loud superior to my old, dead amp in all respects. It does not have a loudness control but I dont think its necessary with this unit. The specs are as good or in most cases better than any at this price point as you can see but the real proof is in the listening and it more than meets my expectations in that regard.
A tipping point on this one over some others was the digital connections unique among 2 channel receivers and amps, at least in my price range. The power rating was also a big sales point. I included integrated amps in my comparison shopping since the tuner was not really needed, but its nice to have the potential. I am using the receiver for CDs, satellite TV sound, DVDs and my refurbished AR turntable. I specifically did not want surround sound.
Though big in size, I like the styling-a really nice package in my opinion.
The reason it earns less than 5 in the ease of use category is that I found the manual less than informative. For instance the instruction on selecting the digital source was buried in the back of the manual which I found only after calling HK customer. service. You would never know by looking at the panel or reading the discription of the controls in the manual.

Now I do not need to buy a power amp, I will keep that for later when I build my audio system 2.0, maybe a couple years later.

I had an old Realistic model SD-2100 with 120 wt. per channel also, the speakers are liquid cooled 160 wts @ 8 hms. the second set is sound research with 100 wts. & 8 hms. and to be honest this HK 3490 has too much power I only had the volume at 10 and that is too loud I just think I should have bought the HK 3390 at 80 wts.
The stereo looks and sounds great there is only two things, I which it had some kind of illumination at the front dial bottons i have to get right in front to change stations. the other is that I am still looking for the mp3 plugin, I think I need to buy the bridge or something. i dont know yet what im going to do.

A preamp just by itself is 200 dollars at Best Buy, so when you consider what youre getting with this unit, its a good value. It seems to be very powerful, and the USB port is nice to have. Has input for two biwired speakers. You can use it for your home theater but Im only using it for music. Would buy again.

Im an old school stereo guy. I have tried home theatre systems but since I listen mainly to music they were useless. I have alway been seeking a great stereo receiver for many years but the best ones have always been just out of reach. Went thru alot of them and then I found this one. It was a bit pricey but when I applied the you get what you pay for equation it was a great deal.
At its price point which is all over the place depending on what site you look at the Harman-Kardon HK-3490 receiver is the best stereo receiver for the money that I have ever heard. This unit is simply amazing. It has stunning good looks, does not look like any other receiver out there and class and elegance just ooze out of it. Its performance is breathtaking, it wont run out of steam no matter how hard it is pushed. This receiver is a jewel. I bought the HK-3490 mainly for its optical input since my Sony 300 disc player had an optical output and I was never able to use it on other comparable receivers. The 120 wattschannel power with ultra-low distortion and ultra-high bandwidth has made my system really wake up even more than before. No matter the volume it never gets more than just a little bit warm.
Am listening to a remastered cd of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Happy Trails as I write this review and feel like I am at the Fillmore West in Nov.1968 and Radiohead, In Rainbows. The optical input brings out a depth of clarity that is remarkable no matter what type of music you listen to. The sound is in the details and this receiver delivers and more. It does a pretty decent job with DVDs and TV as well.
Hook-up was easy and intuitive, a no-brainer. 2 pairs of speakers-Klipsch Synergy B-3s and Optimus 1050s, a Jamo 550 sub-woofer and the inputs and you are ready to go. Many other reviewers have commented on the size of the remote. It is kind of big but then it also stands out and is easy to find and use. I love the illuminated volume control on the face of the unit, it just looks so cool. Everyone who has seen it comments on the look. The front control buttons are small but since I use the remote they are rather irrelevant.
Vanns service and shipping were great as usual. I had a few concerns prior to purchase but the on-line chat cleared them all up. This is a great stereo receiver and sometimes you just have to reach out and get the one you really want. I am totally satisfied with this purchase.

Vanns had the best price on this unit and shipped it immediately so Im not sure what more I could ask for from them. As far as the product itself Im very pleased. Im using it to power my Athena AS-F2.2 floor standing speakers and it sounds fantastic. Coming from my old JBL DCR600 this HK 3490 sounds cleaner with significantly tighter bass. With my old receiver I was getting a lot of boom but I think the extra power headroom from the HK 3490s 120w per channel is doing a better job of controlling the dual woofers. Everything sounds perfect now and the receiver is really nice looking too. I dont know what people have against the remote. Seems quite nice to me. I think I also saw a review stating that the bass and treble knobs are too recessed to turn easily. I guess they didnt try pushing them in, which pops them out a half inch so you can get a grip. The only thing that annoyed me a little and maybe Im wrong is that the caps on the speaker wire terminals dont seem to come out all of the way which makes it really hard to thread 12 gauge wire through. I should probably have banana jacks anyhow but whatever. Grade A product.

I bought this very nice receiver for my wilderness home in Young AZ. There is no FM radio reception there so I was mainly interested in coupling it with XM radio and using it with CDs and have also found that it works well with streaming from satellite internet service.
I am using it with a pair of Klipsch RF 5 speakers. The system can fill a 27x54 foot 1.5 level log home with clean sound. The Dolby adjustments work very nicely with the log walls.
Using it with a computer to stream from satellite internet I can also listen to broadcasts which I cannot receive because I have no FM reception. It is a pleasure to be able to listen to the Saturday broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra while sitting by the fire, and feel like I have an ochestra seat. I may eventually set up the Bridge connection as well. It would be nicer if full digital music capabilities were built-into this receiver, but they are not.
If you dont need surround sound to enjoy fine music this is a great receiver at a reasonable price.

Harmon Kardon has been around for years and has consistently manufactured quality electrical HiFi components for HomeTheatre and home stereo use at nearly all levels. This Receiver compliments my Bose 901 Series VI speakers along with my Velodyne Subwoofers admirably by providing a jolting 120wpc x 2 both channels driven at a full 8ohms, 20Hz - 20kHz, 0.07 THD 240 watts total. 150 Watts x 2, both channels driven at full power at 4ohms 20Hz - 20kHz, 0.2 THD 300 watts total. The receiver includes dual sub-woofer outputs which do not detract from the power outputs stated prior, Pre-amp in and out for equalization and optical digital input amongst its other very robust features. Theres an add-on which allows you to integrate your IPOD directly into the unit along with XM radio etc. The unit is SOLID not flimsy to the touch. It boasts an extrodinary combination of color that dictates quality. My purchase of this receiver was to implement Bose technology OVER the surround solutions more commonly found today. The only disadvantage of this unit is it doesnt include HDMI inputs at the prescribed price point. I think HK has done it again by not wavering on their quality and bringing to market another outstanding unit. My rating is really a 4.5 as I said, only wish there were HDMI inputs.
