Sized for any room
Space at a premium? Try the RC-10 . . . they're big in sound only. Whether you like it loud, or love it detailed, this speaker will knock your socks off. No matter what moves you — music, movies, or games, the RC-10 handles it all, with plenty of power and accuracy. Mount the bookshelf speakers on the wall or shelf for greater versatility.
Powerful sound
The same trick technologies that make Energy's floorstanders rock are tucked inside, from a rugged, powerful 5.5" Ribbed Elliptical Sound woofer to Energy's exclusive 1" aluminum dome tweeter. Crank it to eleven and you'll swear you're listening to speakers twice as large.
Ribbed elliptical sound
The patented Ribbed Elliptical Surrounds that encircle your RC-10's woofers are unlike any other. By changing the shape of the speaker surround to an ellipse, rather than the traditional "half roll," distortion is reduced dramatically. Side benefits include increased excursion and larger piston area, allowing for greater efficiency. The cast basket woofers also feature this technology, allowing the surround to stretch and contract as it moves, eliminating dimpling.
Aluminum dome tweeters
Aluminum dome tweeters combine the wide dispersion characteristics and superior off-axis response of a dome design with firm, but lightweight aluminum. A staple of audiophile-grade speakers, the aluminum dome tweeter features low distortion, flat frequency response, and smooth acoustic dispersion.

I read a ton of reviews before picking these up from Vanns.com. Vanns was great, but these speakers simply blow me away. The sound is full and rich, and the highs are crisp while remaining pleasing to the ears. I tried to make the tweeters emit harsh tones, and it was not possible. These are by far the best bookshelf speakers that I have ever owned, they trump klipsh, polk, jbl, and a number of other brands that I have owned and heard over the years. This is a great buy and you'll thank yourself once you crank them up.

I've had my eyes on RC-10s at full price for years after reading a favorable review for the previous model in stereophile along with a good one for this one as they have great tweeters and because their ports can be plugged for tighter acoustic suspension bass. They need some break in to relax, but then they disappear nicely with great treble speed for metallic percussion, a very revealing midrange that make vocals sound more there than ever and despite their size, and a nice amount of bass even with their ports plugged. they have no traces of aluminum pinging that I can detect from the tweeters. I really like the brushed steel accents on the drivers and the kevlar woofer is very classy looking. That I got these cheap with free delivery makes this my happiest hifi purchase ever! The ONLY things any speakers I've ever owned thats done anything better would be the image specificity of my NHT superzeros which were more polite in the bass and treble or MORE bass from my 8 inch celestion ditton 100s which have flimsy 58 MDF cabinets you can hear, but the RC-10s are tighter from top to bottom than either with awesome speed. LOVE EM!

For this review, I would like to concentrate on the so-called break in period for these little beauties the previous reviewers comments on amazing bass, clarity and smooth tweeter response all still apply - they really are a RIDICULOUS BUY for $200.00 If I had to do it all over again, I would buy these for my entire HT system and pair with a tasty sub - and that would be that - it would be done. Anyway, I would like to speak of the break in....first off - IT IS REAL. While I do not understand the physics of the break in period, I can attest to the fact that it is real, and astonishing. Energy calls for 100 hours of break in, and I believe them....when I first hooked them up, I was underwhelmed at the quality it was like listening to a speaker that had gauze all over the front...after about 10 hours they got better I would call them listenable at this stage. The speakers then kind of went through a plateau stage, where I was almost convinced to box them back up and send them back...I left for a weekend, and let them play Bartok, Barber, Mahler. When I came back I was convinced someone had broken in to my house, stolen these speaker and replaced them with another pair - it was that different- clear, airy highs, deep bass....wow.
Wow. These are great. Buy them now. (September 12, 2012)

Received these yesterday. Today I hooked them up to an amp, and started breaking them in. The first hour or so they didnt impress, but I know to wait a while before evaluating speakers. After a few short hours, they improved. These arent my first Energy speakers, so I knew what to expect. Theyre clear, detailed, nuetral, versatile. Highs are extended, clear and smooth, mids are rich, bass is solid & tight. They sound great with everything I throw at them hard rock, electronica, acoustic instruments, voices all sound great. At full MSRP, they may be other speakers to consider, but at just over $200pr. wow, do they sound nice. They were a no-brainer for me. I also bought the Veritas 5.1 monitors, which look to have the same drivers. The Veritas finish match the Energy RC Minis in my AV system, so theyll go there. For music though, I think these less expensive RC-10s might sound even better. Im very pleased with these and Im glad I bought them. Over the course of the past ten years, I've had every single Energy model in the RefCon series. In fact, this is my second pair of these. I never get rid of them because I don't like them I sell them because I am an audio nut who thrives on buying, selling, trading and trying. In each and every case when Ive sold an Energy and replaced it with a different brand, I have regretted it. That includes, but is absolutely not even close to being limited to B&W, KEF, Acoustic Energy, PSB, Paradigm and many others I'm listing the ones the average consumer likely will at least have heard of. The RC-10 model is no exception. For a speaker in its price and size class, it really cannot be beaten by anything I've tried. To me, price has not particular place in a review, as price doesn't effect performance, but the perception of quality is typically linked to price. So, with that baloney in mind, yes, I've had speakers costing 5 - 7 times as much that Ive not liked as much. But, as I said, who cares? It's what meets the ear that matters, and what meets the ear here is music, not a pile of pointless specifications which happen to be good anyway. Note This review applies only to the RefCon series. I have had higher end and costlier Energys that Ive NOT liked as well.

WOW! Like so many others I spent many hours pouring over reviews of these speakers before I purchased them. Since I was unable to find a local store to hear them in person I had to trust the reviews. After several weeks of investigating I finally ordered 2 sets of these speakers. I wanted speakers that could be used for my surround sound but almost more importantly I wanted something to listen to music through. I installed them as fronts and rears for surround also purchased the Energy LCR for the center channel. As the instructions said they did need a break in period. There was a very noticeable difference after the first 10 hours or so and they keep getting better.
I am amazed how they fill my room with music, or effects when watching a movie. With my old system I could always tell, ok that sound came from the left rear or that was the right front, but with these the room is engulfed with the sound making the whole experience so much nicer. I can finally sit and listen to CDs and actually enjoy the music.
I am very happy with the speakers and the price.
I purchased the Omnimount 20.0 to mount all 4 speakers to the wall, I am not using the foam plug in any of the speakers and the sound is great. I would highly recommend these for music and movies.

I upgraded from in-TV speakers to the Energy RC-10s paired with a denon avr-1712, 2.0 system for now, had them a little over a week, used about 75 music mostly alt rock 25 movies.
They seem well-built and of high quality I wasnt too thrilled with the pictures of the Black Ash, but it is actually pretty nice in person.
After a week, the speakers have far exceeded my expectations in every way. They sound great out of the box, but seem to really open up after break-in Energy recommends 90 hours, I probably have half that the bass has steadily improved and, while not earth-shattering, will definitely suffice until I am able to add a sub some day.
For movies, I was worried about not having a center channel, but a phantom center seems to work fine another thing to add later. Voices are audible and clear.
Source material is important! When I first tried them out, I played some FM Radio and was very disappointed - on some songs, the vocals had a metallic or tinny sound to them. Worried the speakers were damaged, I played the same songs on spotify, and everything sounded great. Imperfections in source like heavily compressed FM Radio are extremely apparent, so make sure you have a better quality feed.
Overall, do not think you can get much better at this price point, and I am very happy with the Energy RC-10s which is good, because I will have them in 2.0 for a while. Highly recommended.

The thing I especially like about them is that they have very smooth and clear highs but not bright or fatiguing like some of the small bookshelf speakers I have heard from other manufacturers. Good impact midrange too. I cant comment on their bass limits though as Im using them with the Velodyne sub. Overall, Im very happy with these speakers.

Aside from their aesthetic appeal the RC-10s match up very closely with the new Veritas 5.1, no surprise since both have a similar driver complement and enclosure design.. Also, the price per pair is quite a bit cheaper for the older model making the RC-10 or the larger speakers in the line a great choice for either a main or second AV setup. As far as the sound, with the receivers crossover set to small, I placed them side by side and did find that the new gloss finish Veritas had somewhat higher output and better detail than the RCs..Still, the highly regarded Reference Connoisseur speakers are a well executed low distortion design with plenty of clarity without the harshness often found in speakers in and above their price range. Ill put it this way. This is a speaker you can actually listen to all day long even at reasonably loud levels with your ears still intact. Your neighbors might not share your enthusiasm for home entertainment but their high output capabilities will keep you and your friends happy though a few might feel just a little bit jealous if you mention how little you paid for them. The RCs have a very nice open midrange and treble but remarkably I found them to also have a good amount of controlled, tuneful bass response for a mini-monitor. Put on a CD or music video and youll find lower piano notes, double-basses, etc.very convincing. They might not have quite the impact of a Klipsch Reference floorstander but theyll without a doubt shine in a small to medium sized room. That saying, the RCs will perform best stand-mounted but they should work fine on a bookshelf with the port plugs inserted. If you can find a dealer who carries them, Id give them a listen, If not you just might want to order a pair to audition which is what I did. Just order them from a dealer with a decent return policy so if you decide theyre not for you it wont be a hassle returning them. Just give the RCs a decent receiver and DVD player.and youre set. Theyre worthy of better components but should perform well even if you only have a modest receiver.. Associated components Sony DA-555ES receiver, Denon DVD-3910, Audioquest interconnects and speaker wire, Boston VR-500 subwoofer.

Read a ton of reviews here and on several AV forums before making the decision to try the Energy RC-10s. I did make a trip to the local BB to try some lesser Energy bookshelves - the RC-10s are probably only available for demo in select dealers. Though people seem divided on the need, the manual suggests a break-in time of 100hrs, which I started by playing moderate volume classical music to give them a wide range to play with for about 36 hours straight before testing them out otherwise. I did not do ANY adjustments to these before this process. Have them hooked up to an Onkyo TX-NR509 in 2.0 format building a system, so no sub yet. They sound GREAT after a simple adjust to make sure the receiver knows they are full range and not part of a surround setup. Man can these things get loud! Much too much for my apartment read neighbors and with no distortion, but that is also a kudos to Onkyo. These are fantastic mini-monitors for those without the room, inclination or budget for a serious full tower. They play a very large range with crisp highs that do not bite your ears and they have some boom in the bottom, but not so much to replace a subwoofer. If you are looking for serious home theater sound, these are a start and will require a sub. The kevlar cone handles mids an lows well and tight. Their connections are professional and very solid. They come with a bridge to allow one set of cables or bi-amping if you feel so inclined. Banana plugs fit nicely. They can be wall-mounted with adapters, but these are heavy and large so dont lend themselves well to this unless you have a very large room to play in. The cabinets are BEAUTIFUL and a very rich black that doesnt come through as well in the pictures here. They are much better looking in person. My room is 12 x 20 and they could tear my walls down if I needed them to, these are a great buy! And, they can be bi-amped for some serious ear-numbing power!

I had previously tried other bookshelves that were too fatiguing for nearfield listening. With the RC-10s setup about 3ft away from the listening position, these speakers sound excellent. Their characteristic smooth sound makes them non-fatiguing, and they have excellent clarity for music reproduction. Moreover, the bass response is phenomenal for a small speaker with 5 15 drivers, close to what the Phantoms 8 woofers could provide. And their small size makes them perfect for my computer workstation area.

Energy recommends running these for 100 hours or so before they open up. However, right out of the box i was impressed with their sound. The biggest thing i noticed was how much bass comes out of these. Quite impressive for their size. The high are very smooth and linear. The midrange is full and detailed. The bass is tight and not boomy. They come with port plugs in situations where you need to place them close to walls. For what Vanns is selling these for Id say they are a steal. Lastly they go quite well with modern living room attire. If youre in the fence about these Id say go for it. Currently im using them as mains and surrounds and they sound as good as my previous Polk Audio tower speakers.

I decided to save up some cash and purchase my first set of nice *new* speakers. All of my equipment has always been used, hand-me-down, or yard sale type stuff. After reading a lot of reviews about a lot of different speakers, I decided to grab these. I have to say, Im glad I chose these.
They are not quite half way through the break in phase so far, but they sound great! You will see many reviews that talk about these speakers having a big sound. Its completely true! Ample bass response, especially considering the size of the driver and the entire cabinet. Its not sloppy, boomy bass either, its very detailed and tight. I listen to lots of classic rock, bluesjazz, and electronica. No matter if its an upright string bass, a funky electric bass, or a synth beat, the low frequencies are very clear and accurate. Highs are up front and detailed as well, but are not piercing or fatiguing, which is nice considering the aluminum dome tweeter. They initially were lacking in very high frequency response, maybe above 15khz or so, but as they have broken in, I have noticed much more HF sound coming in to play. Ive found the best way to break them in is to play a broad range of music for as long as you can at low-medium levels for the first 15-20 hours, then start to crank them up. I gave mine the first full run for the money after about 25-30 hours, let them blast for an hour or two, then turned it back down to reasonable levels. The biggest improvement I heard was after that couple hours at full swing, I guess these drivers really do need to stretch out first.
My only real complaint about their sound is that with the highs and lows both being so pronounced, they almost make you forget about the mid range. I find the mid range still very precise and uncolored, but it is as easy to forget about as it is to listen to, if that makes sense. Maybe the mids will open up a little more as they continue to break in, but I wouldnt say they are lacking now.
Overall, these are very accurate, musical speakers, and can really pump out the music when you crank em up a bit, and I can see why people say they would be top competitors for the sub $1k speaker lineup.

And the sound is nothing but impressive right of of the box from these small speakers even without being broken it yet. Though a sub is recommended these sound great and detailed for music and are just what the doctor ordered for theater!

These speakers, after listening to a variety of music and movies, create extremely high quality sound. The tweeters handle high frequencies accurately and the woofers produce bass that leaves guests looking for the non-existent sub woofer.
The manufacturer of these speakers uses very little to no marketing jargon, and they dont need to. The speakers speak for themselves.
Overall, Im extremely satisfied with these speakers, and will continue to use them for a long time.
By the way I have not spent any time adjusting the position of these speakers, or give them the minimum 100-hour break in time

I am very pleased with the RC-10s, with a great buying experience through Vanns. I have them as main speakers paired with a Marantz SR7000 receiver clarity is phenomenal, they do indeed sound larger than they are. Some reviewers feel the low-end is lacking- I would agree, if you are looking for full robust sound- laws of physics still apply to the small cabinets. I added a Hsu Research subwoofer, VTF-1, and the trio is just fantastic. I do have the port blockers in to counter the close placement to the wall. Using the Macromount wall mounts, the speakers are fairly unobtrusive and easily positionable to hit the sweet spot in my 14x12 listening room. Music and movies- they are awesome. I really enjoy these speakers and love the price point. Thinking about getting a second pair as surrounds.

I purchased the RC-10 after extensive research and speaking to people on forums who own the product. I must say I was a little concerned at first because of the descriptions given of the sound of the speakers such as laid back or neutral. However, after connecting these to my Onkyo system I was pleasantly surprised just how wonderful these sounded right out of the box. And as I continue to play them through the break in period recommend 100 hours by manufacturer the speakers began to open up and sound even better.
I find them to be very pleasing to the ear, not harsh in the high frequency range as some other brands like Klipsch for example.
I am very pleased with the sound of these as fronts, but will eventually send them to the rear for surround duty and purchase some RC towers for fronts.
In the mean time these bookshelf speakers will work out just great.
For real low bass, I would say below 60 to 70 Hz or so, you will need a sub to present these lower frequencies, however for music listening I found the bass response to be more than sufficient.

This is really has a marvelous transducer. I purchased this pair as my main front R and L speakers and I am extremely happy in both my home theater and music endeavors.
The best way to describe the sound is engaging. I was immediately blown away at the realism you get from these small bookshelf speakers... Heres a few tunes I listened to after the recommended 50hrs of burn-in
~Saint-Saens Organ Symphony Do yourself a favor and download a good recording of this album. The last movement in particular is a must when auditioning. The first thing I noticed was the incredible sound stage. If you close your eyes you can almost swear youre in a orchestral hall. The next remarkable thing was the power I got from the organ especially in the low end. I had to keep checking if my receiver was truly on Direct and not Stereo...You really dont need a subwoofer if youre going for classical and jazz music only.
~Sades Lovers Rock Heres where you need a subwoofer. To really get the chest thumping lows I paired the R-10s with Energys ESW-V10. You now have front row tickets to a intimate concert with Sade. Its amazing... I was never a big listener of poprocksoul... Its just generally a harsher sound on the average speaker. These speakers however are so non-fatiguing its like hearing it all for the first time. I now look forward to new bands and sounds in all genres.
Transparency, warmth, clarity, depth, separation, neutrality are all words I could use. There are simply not enough to describe this experience. It is like watching a sunset or running a marathon... You simply have to be there.

First of all, I bought the cherry and they are darker than the pics but simply gorgeous and very spouse friendly -
Second, I am not really sure about the competition at the 600 price point, but if you can snag them on sale they are a great value. I have owned several mid-level Polk bookshelfs rti series and older rt series and although the Polks are very good speakers, the tweeter in these simply sparkles. Acoustic guitars, trumpets, cymbal crashes and female voices sound lush and lack any harshness or offensive qualities. The mids sound a little closed in at first, but now that they have broken in the mids are nice and smooth as well. The bass is plenty for me. I cross them over at 80 hz and the blend nicely with the sub. These will definitely stay in my set-up for quite awhile, and I tend to switch things up fairly often. Recommended.
As a side note, I got a rosenut rc-mini center since it was on sale and Vanns was out of cherry and although the color is slightly redder and darker when next to the rc10s, when they are a couple feet apart is almost impossible to tell that they are a different color. Score!

These speakers are pretty nice overall, but dont expect to get much performance below 80 to 100 Hz. These speakers pretty much require a sub and for many people the combined cost would make them unattractive.
But these speakers do match well with RC-70s or RC-LCRs, so people may be attracted to buy these for surrounds or in the case where larger speakers are not an option. They are very smooth speakers though and you can crank them up and they really dont distort, just they wont play low end frequencies.
The tweeter is comparable to the RC-70s, but the mid-range and low-end are just not there with the RC-10s... so beware that these speakers as a solo pair will probably disappoint you, but they are smoother and better sounding than Paradigm Mini-Monitors.

I purchased two pair of RC-10s a couple weeks ago, and they have been nothing less than excellent. The sound quality for music is great. I can hear things that I have never heard on other speakers before. Getting these speakers has resulted in me re-ripping all of my cds into a higher quality format, since I can actually hear all of the details -- the lower quality mp3s just dont cut it!
I have watched several movies using these as my RL Front speakers, as well as my surrounds, and they really do a great job of filling my moderately sized - 12x18 - living room.
I cant say enough about how good they sound at all levels. From whisper quiet listening late at night, to thunderously loud when watching an action flick, there is no distortion or any difference in quality from the RC-10s. Just an overall great product, and Vanns has done a great job on all of my orders. Definitely recommended.

My order was processed in a day and the items were shipped immediately. They were delivered to me by UPS in less than a week. Each speaker pair had been double boxed and packaged really well. The RC-10s require 100 hrs to break-in and I am amazed at their sound quality. They are way way better then what I was expecting. I listen to a lot of music ranging from classical to poprock and everything sounds so awesome. DVDs and Blurays sound great too. If you are looking for a speakers, I would recommend the RC-10s without hesitation and Vanns as the place to buy them.

I have owned many differant speakers in the past. Polks, Bose, Cerwin Vaga and Bostons. These speakers are very small. The sound is unbelievable. The sound that comes out of these speakers dont fit the size of these speakers. I thought I was listening to tower speakers! They are so crisp and clear. Even the bass is incredible. They can blow the walls down for movies, but music is where they really excel. You really get the feeling that the instruments are inside the room with you.
I listened to a few different speakers before purchasing, but nothing really stood out to me like these Energy offerings. Klipsch were nice, but I felt they might be too bright, and I was a little worried about listener fatigue. Ive always been a fan of Energy ever since first hearing their diminutive Take Classic speakers. Their accuracy and body was astounding for such small speakers. Well, their much bigger brothers, the RC-10s, dont disappoint in these areas and offer a more rounded, fuller sound. The RC-10s have got to be the most accurate and detailed speakers Ive heard in their price range. Bassy, but not boomy or muddy in the low mid-range, the sound is very full down below 80Hz, which makes these speakers perfect for pairing with a subwoofer for either movies or music. These are probably my favorite speakers for music, as their instrumental reproduction and timbre are spot-on. The highs are crisp and clear without being overly bright or forward, and the mids and lows are smooth and full. A top-notch speaker all around.

I paired these Energy RC10s with my older Energy Encore system that I was quite happy with. I used these two to replace my L and R channel speakers. Wow! What a difference! The powerful sound these put out is amazing. It used to be my system lacked the proper midrange for heavy rock music. These have definitely taken care of that problem. I love them.

These were the first speakers Ive bought in nearly 6 years and I was very picky about what I spent my hard earned money on. I read all the reviews I could find and which speakers were the best quality for the money and all research pointed me to these two little beauties. The sound is really amazing for the price. They sound crisp at low volume and can really fill the room eloquently even at louder volumes. from reggae to classical, they work perfectly on all audio ranges, and they look great. Vanns had the best price, excellent service and got me my speakers so fast I could barely believe it. I know this review sounds too good to be true but believe me, it was an ll around great experience and I really couldnt be happier witht eh service and especially the product!

After breaking in my RC 10s they are nothing short of amazing. Light years better than my previous Sony home theater in a box in sound and build quality. These speakers are everything I expected them to be plus more. Sound is clear, unique and pure. Music feels being played right at your living room, especially string instruments. With games the sound is thunderous and movies make you feel right at the movie theater. These bookshelves easily fill a small to medium sized room. If you are looking for tower like room filling sound the RC 10s are definitely it.

Any concerns I had about replacing large older speakers with small bookshelf speakers disappeared the moment I connected the RC 10s. These speakers are amazing with acoustic instruments, jazz and strings. From Craig Chaquicos guitar and Yo-Yo Mas cello, to Tom Pettys Learning to Fly, and a multitude of genres streamed from Pandora, and RC 10s deliver crisp highs, realistic mids and plenty of bass.
Due to their size, RC 10s can not be expected to handle the full dynamic range of a 120-piece symphonic orchestra ---no surprise there---but neither could my neighbors, and for that I use the headphones.
I listen to music all the time, sometimes late at night, and these speakers sound delightfully good regardless of volume levels.
Energy RC 10s are very beautifully finished in real wood veneer and from the cabinets to drivers to dual wiring capable gold plated hookups, they look as well as they sound.

I Just purchased these Energy speakers last week. I hooked them up to my Pioneer VSX-1019AHK and my 50 Samsung plasma in the living room. I already purchased the matching Energy RCLCR in rosenut to match these. First thing that you notice when you open these bookshelf speakers is how well they are packaged. The finish goes very well with my other furniture and the speakers are nice and compact. The sound that comes out of these little speakers is outstanding! I have a full Klipsch home theater setup and these three speakers give the much larger Kilpsch system a run for the money. I did allot of research and these are the speakers that ended up meeting most of my criteria-price,style,size and quality. I highly suggest trying these out if you are looking for great high quality bookshelf speaker. P.S. I also bought the Omnimount Gemini 2 speaker stands and they work perfectly with these!

I compared these to Floor Standing speakers and they are almost on par with them. The bass is great, and the voices are so clear and smooth. Unlike the Polks which are so bright. It was either Energy RC-10 or Polk ATI A1s. The Energys win hands down.
The only negative thing that happened to me was the back grounding plate some how got loose and was stuck inside the speaker but i managed to fish it out with a chopstick and tape.
Vanns price is unbeatable so get them while you can for this price.

I love my Energy RC-10s. The Rosenut finish is beautiful in person. The pictures really do not do it any justice. They look the part of top quality speakers. They also sound top quality. The sound is very clean and for such a small speaker it has surprising fullness. I have these connected to a Denon AVR-1910 with a RC-Mini CC for a center and 2 RC-Minis for surrounds, along with a Energy 10.3 sub. For movies, the sound fills my 10x10 room with unbelievable richness and clarity. Be sure to run Audyssey as your movies will sound 100 times better. For music, these RC-10s do very well in 2.0. If you dont have the room for tower speakers but still want the full sound of them, these RC-10s will not disappoint. Or, if you are thinking about using these as surrounds to complement you RC-50s-70s, dont hesitate. These will complete your perfect 5.1 or 7.1 setup. And at the awesome price that Vanns has them listed for, you will not want to let this deal pass you by. Get your pair before they are gone for good!

Ive been using the Energy RC-10s for stereo use for a month and a half and now that theyve been reasonably broken in Im really getting accustomed to their sonics I wanted to offer my opinion of them. Speakers are much more refined these days and benefit from latest technology and materials and at a much more reasonable price than ever. From the finely crafted cabinets I have the cherry to the high-grade components incorporated into the RC-10s, there is plenty of value and pride of ownership here. In my thinking, Energy went several steps beyond what you ordinarily get at this price point by offering a smooth, detailed and realistic presentation of instruments and voices, balanced frequency response and a really convincing soundstage. They remind me of the you are there realism and the great imaging I experienced with my first really good speakers, the PSB Stratus Minis that I bought back in 93 which back then were $900 list. The Minis werent so mini, though. My lord, they were seventeen inches tall! Ive owned several different good pairs since then but for the size I think the Energys are a cut above with a smooth and clear top end and well-defined response up and down the frequency range. As for the bass and lower midrange, there is slam aplenty and so they dont necessitate a subwoofer unless they are to be used primarily for heavily effect-laden Dolby Digital video playback or if they will be used in a larger area. I have them positioned on the long wall in my 16 X 12 living room, about 2 feet from the wall and the bass is tight and tuneful. If, however they are to be placed close to a wall or corner area, or the owner is a little bass-shy, foam plugs for the port holes are included to lower output to help balance out the sound if needed.
Rebecca Pidgeons Raven and Johnny Frigo and John Pizzarellis Live at Studio A Chesky Records really show what the Energys are capable of. Everything sounds as it should and in proper perspective with warmth, body, nuance and refinement such that you feel the ambience and depth of listening to live music. Of course, the size of the image is quite a bit smaller than tower systems given the proportions of the RC-10s rather small enclosures but they indeed pack a lot of sound from well-braced, solid cabinets, a good Kevlar woofer, quality internal components and a good aluminum dome tweeter. Aside from jazz recordings, they are also capable of doing justice with your favorite rock CDs and can be turned up to fairly loud levels with your ears in reasonably good shape when the tracks you want to hear are over. In fact, the Energys are very easy to listen to since they dont overdo the mids and highs. They also provide an intimate listening experience with excellent soundstaging and impact. Are they the speakers for you? That youll have to find out since everyones tastes vary but throw a few good recordings at the RC-10s and I think youll agree that there is a lot of value here. If you dont like them, send em back for a refund!
