At the heart of the KEF KHT5005.2 system lies four satellite speakers, each featuring KEF's Uni-Q Array. Uni-Q Technology consists of an aluminum tweeter small enough to mount in the acoustic center of a 4.5" midrange driver. This disperses the sound over a much wider area, so everyone enjoys the same clear, warm, realistic sound instead of just those listeners positioned in the small 'sweet spot' that you get with conventional speakers. The dedicated center channel complements its own Uni-Q Array with a pair of 3" bass drivers, bringing crisp transparency to all dialogue even when competing with ambient noise. And, since today's blockbusters require hefty bass punch, you need BOOM! — not poof — when the on-screen action takes a turn for the haywire, right? KEF delivers the power you desire with a 250W class D amplifier pushing a 10-inch driver with auxiliary bass radiator. You get legendary KEF-quality audio performance, and you — you lucky dog — you get it in your living room, at your disposal, 24/7.

Uni-Q Array Explained

The Uni-Q concept is based on using aerospace materials to make the tweeter small enough to place at the acoustic center of the bass/midrange cone. With both drive units on exactly the same axis and sharing the same waveguide, they behave as a single point source that projects a more natural sound image over a much larger area than the usual tiny 'sweet spot.' This is because the Uni-Q configuration eliminates the inherent problems of having the separate midrange and high frequency drive units of a conventional speaker. As loudspeaker radiation varies according to frequency, low frequency and high frequency drivers have intrinsically different radiation patterns whose directivity - known as 'Q' - changes at the crossover frequency. Interference (or 'lobing') between the two units causes a dip in power response around this frequency, with a peak above it due to their differences in directivity. These factors introduce colorations that muddy the sound image. You get no such problems with Uni-Q. Being coincident and perfectly time-aligned, the directivity of both LF and HF units is controlled by the profile of the midrange cone, with no possible path or phase differences between the two, and no 'lobing' interference at the crossover. The 'Q' is unified, in other words - hence the name.

The Shape Of Sound And The Uni-Q Pattern

So instead of narrowing towards the crossover and then widening again as is the case with separate drive units, the Uni-Q radiation pattern remains stable. Power response is uniform, with smoother variations on and off-axis. The acoustic image is better balanced and more natural sounding across both direct and reverberant fields. Multi-channel imaging is noticeably clearer and more accurate. The MF voice coil is of copper-coated aluminium ribbon, edge-wound over a polyimide former to increase sensitivity by maximizing the amount of copper in the magnet gap. The chassis are of precision-cast aluminium for greater rigidity, with a vented design to improve power handling. Faraday rings are incorporated into the ultra-low distortion motor, further reducing harmonic distortion by as much as 20dB. With refinements like these, no wonder the sound is so open and natural. No wonder the action on screen suddenly becomes more compelling. No wonder you get so utterly immersed in the listening experience. It's what the KEF experience is all about.

A New Standard: Center Channel Bliss

Your movie dialogue had better be good, because you're going to hear every word of it. Carrying up to 60% of the sound, the center channel is vital in any home theater system, and the dedicated center speaker of the 5000 Series is in a league of its own. With the same new generation 4.5" Uni-Q array as the satellites, flanked by two additional 3" bass drivers, the hefty frontal impact is complemented by amazingly clear dialogue. And the response is so superbly integrated across the frequency range that you soon forget you're listening to a recorded signal. It sounds astonishingly true to life.

Stylish Satellites

An evolution in style and function, the KEF KHT3005 is a completely new design that looks better and sounds sweeter than its esteemed predecessor, and anything else in its class. The new 4.5" Uni-Q driver in these satellite speakers has been comprehensively engineered for even cleaner, smoother response. An improved magnet system delivers even heftier bass by allowing greater movement of the speaker cone. KEF's all-new sealed suspension technology (SST) fills in the gap between midrange cone and tweeter to produce a markedly more powerful, cleaner sound. Distinctive radial ribs on the midrange cone improve its rigidity for pure, clean vocal effects with exceptionally low distortion. The cast aluminium enclosures are shaped to minimize internal resonance so that the satellites fill the room with a lush and incredibly detailed 3D sound. The attention to detail is plain to see, from the depth of the gloss finish to the ingeniously simple wall mounting bracket system. Dynamic. Perfectly balanced. Seamlessly integrated.

A Pretty Subwoofer?

It's the first subwoofer at this price level that you won't want to hide away out of sight. With an ultra-reliable, high efficiency, 250W class D amplifier powering a 10" driver with a matching auxiliary bass radiator, the radical HTB2 model subwoofer anchors the 3D sound image with stunningly realistic low frequency reproduction. Whether you prefer to position it vertically or horizontally, the story's the same: an acoustically inert enclosure shaped to eliminate internal standing waves, extremely fast response and SmartBass 'connect and go' versatility with simple bass boost and phase controls.

And If You Go With Wireless, There's No Interference

If the idea of radio signals being used to transport audio makes you think of your childhood walkie-talkie, think again. KEF's revolutionary 2.4Ghz radio frequency wireless signal delivers real time audio with no mutes, audio dropouts, or loss of bonding. For example, if you ever listen to a radio you may notice that when you turn on your microwave it causes a static sound due to frequency interferance. This isn't going to be a problem with your home theater system, because KEF uses an 'Intelligent' Interferance-Free Signal.
