Forward-firing design offers versatile placement
The low-frequency bass audio reproduced by subwoofers has low directionality. Whoa! That sounds a bit technical! But, in all reality, the concept is quite simple: The sound waves characteristic of bass audio are wide enough that their source can be difficult to locate with the ear. On the one hand, this is an advantage of bass audio because it gives the impression of room-filling audio. On the other hand, however, without a little directionality, bass audio loses some of its punch. Now, many subwoofers are designed with drivers that point downward, utilizing the floor as a guide for creating directionality.
