Purchased July, 2011.
I received this subwoofer as a birthday gift. As someone who has always appreciated quality speakers that do not break the bank, I decided to go with this subwoofer. Two friends of mine had older Velodynes. They loved them.
Bad stuff out of the way first I bought the sub and had tons of problems with trying to get it to turn on. I would have to CRANK my volume up, adjust sub dB on receiver, fiddle with the sub cross over on the plate amp, etc. etc. I just thought my Denon was having issues giving it voltage. I ran a Y cable. Didnt work. The issue got worse until it wouldnt work.
Called Velodyne... gave them my spiel. Told them I took the amp out, inspected the driver, connections, etc. Gave them symptoms. Told them I thought it was the amp. I mailed in just the plate amp and in a week or so they sent me a new amp with a new, updated warranty. Fixed. Works like a charm. Turns on at low volumes. Sounds great. Velodyne was really easy to deal with...other than I wasnt too keen on paying the 10 shipping, one way, to mail it to Velodyne. Oh well, its ok. Overall, A on service and standing behind your product.
I ***had*** this VX-11 matched up to some Mid 90s MB Quart 502QLs bookshelf speakers. One might think there was a mismatch in terms of level of qualityprice for the speakers. I was kinda worried about this myself. I think they sounded great together. Movies and music sound great with the Velodyne...the VX11 does not come across as being cheap or inadequate for smallmedium rooms. Hooked up to a Denon AVR-1612.
The only downside with having them paired with the MB Quarts is that the sub simply will not keep up power wise when the amp is turned up. Thats fine...I need to save my hearing.
I had not paid much attention to the MB Quarts...I just threw them on the Denon thinking they were compatible...come to find out the MB Quarts were an ohm mismatch. Thats fine, I want to protect my MBs and my Denon. I will find a separate 4 ohm load amp for them.
I just ordered some cheap Klipsch WB-14s. All the Klipsch stuff I have owned Promedia 4.1, Original Hereseys and have experienced too much to list has large appeal to me. I expect the WB-14s to be completely different from the MB Quarts. With that said, it should be a better match. I expect the Velodyne VX-11 to fully keep up.
In short If you are looking for an entry level sub, look no further. I love this sub. Simply great! Dont be afraid to price-point mismatch. Just be aware that when using this sub with a larger speaker such as the MB Quart QL502s, it will not keep up at the HIGH volume levels. Velodyne knows what they are doing.
I ranked relative to the price point for reasons of criterioncontext relatedness.

I found that this subwoofer was perfect for my apartment and audiovideo needs. There is enough bass for movies and music without disturbing my neighbors! I have it hooked up to an Harman Kardon HK 3480 receiver, using JBL S38 speakers. My albums, cds, and movies sound great! As with any new speakers there needs to be several weeks listening at moderate levels, before the full potential of this subwoofer is realized. Once it has been broken in and adjusted to your room environment listening preferences? It is very musical with tight bass, as far as subwoofers go, imo. If you have a very large room or like lots of BOOM! This subwoofer may not be for you! But it is perfect, for smaller rooms e.g. apartments, basements, bedrooms, small living or family rooms.
Cons
No remote. Velodyne customer service sucks, but Vanns good customer service will take care of you, if problems do arise! Other than that, I do regret purchasing my Velodyne VX-11!

I had this for a short while before returning and getting something a bit more on the high end mainly for music. However, I must say it was a powerful little fella, and was excellent with movies. If I ever considered setting up a simple system in a small room just for movies, and not blowing my wallet out at the same time, I would not take this off my list.

This subwoofer is joined to a pair of Paradigm micro monitors v.6 in an office space of less than a hundred square feet. Power comes from an Onkyo CS-445 it is adequate for the space. The Onkyo provided speakers generated sound. It is only used as part of 2.1 music stereo setpup.
Even with the Paradigm speakers there was something missing from the sound reproduction. It was the lower end of the sound wave spectrum. Since the size of the subwoofer was a concern this particular unit had the right measurements, was from a firm specializing in subwoofers, had strong professional reviews, and was not an exorbitant price.
I had originally wanted to keep the cost of the subwoofer around a hundred dollars. The available units in that range all lacked some essential element and had lackluster user reviews. In increasing the upper price range this unit came on to the radar screen.
Set up was extremely easy, once the price was paid for the necessary cable and adaptor. Adjustments took a three days in terms of crossover point and a fixed volume for use with the Paradigm speakers.
The volume of this subwoofer in my space at just over one quarter volume. If set higher the common wall shakes and causes an unacceptable reverberation accompanied by a rattling of the heating and cooling system. The unit does have a rear air port which generates reverberation if placed to close to the wall. This issue was addressed by placing one sheet of natural cork available at big box hardware stores on the wall behind the subwoofer. The crossover is set at 110 on the back switch.
The basic music CDs used for the subwoofer setup were Edgar Meyers Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites Performed on Double Bass -- a true test of reproduction of low tones. The resonances of the idoubel bass were clearly articulated and distinct with the subwoofer and were difuse and harsh without the subwoofer and Led Zepplins Early Days -- each instrument and its harmonics are distinct..
My one minor annoyance with the unit is that there is no automatic onoff switch. This seems to be a standard feature on most current subwoofers and is included on less expensive competitors. My solution was to put the whole setup on a dedicated power strip with an onoff switch. Hence the notch down on value.
Overall a high level of satisfaction

Pure and simple, this sub is awesome. Im using it for my room which is about 10x12 and it fills the room perfectly. After several days of break in and a few tweaking to the volume and frequency controls on the back of the sub, the bass is nicely distributed to all areas of the room without being isolated to the locaiton of the sub. The sub is also pretty compact, maybe not MiniVee compact, but enough so it doesnt seem daunting. This sub easily out performs other subs in the price range and even those higher in price. Velodyne is known for their subs, and the VX11 does not disappoint. Do not hesitate with this sub.

After a bunch of research, which was not necessary had I listened to the advice the Vanns associate had given me in my first conversation with him about subs, I got the VX 11. As some of the other reviews have stated it was a little boomy initially, but after a week or so it has mellowed into a great sounding sub that has a bunch of horsepower if you need it. Its primarily a music sub for me, but the few movies Ive watched with it in use it adds a whole new element to the sound. As a music sub it has a nice tight bass. Once I got the crossover and volume set it blends great and gives me the low end that my bookshelf Kefs were lacking. Highly recomended.

I was concerned that cutting power by 80 percent and uping the cutoff to 32Hz would be a little disappointing, but not so. In fact, I like this sub better! In a 17 ft x 13 ft room it blends perfectly with my Mission mains and Polk center...sonically does not stand out at all, which I think is a good thing. Finally the system becomes a whole and each individual speaker fades from consciousness. Whats left is simply great music. I should have downgraded sooner. I am officially done with subwoofer envy. Much prefer to have something that fits the job at hand rather than force a component into the system because its *bad-ass*.

When I connected everything and watched a movie for the first time I couldnt tell any difference between the old and new sub. Vanns recommended a five day break in period to loosen the foam surround of the woofer to allow for maximum movement. Its been a week numerous movies and almost non stop music of use and I still think the 6.5 sub performs just as well as the VX-11. I realize I didnt pay a ton for this sub but I guess I expected a bit more.

A really nice unit. Worked right out of the box and delivered the bass in accordance with specs.
Please note that subwoofer just fills in the audible frequency range not covered with main speakers in your system. So this unit is nice if used with a small bookshelf speakers that use woofers 6.5in to 8in. If your main speakers have already 10in woofers I would recommend looking into 12 or 15in subwoofer.
It also has power line protecton that may switch of the unit intermittently if power line voltage falls below certain level. This didnt work great in my setup and I had to replace VX-11 with different type without this kind of protection.

Velodyne...THE name in subwoofers!
The VX-11 is an entry level sub, but dont let that title throw you. Unless the square footage of your living room is the size of a small zip code, this sub should do the job. My room is somewhat small at 18 x 14, but my subs volume is set at the 11 oclock position, so I have plenty of power to spare should I ever want to upgrade my living room! My VX-11 is working along side some good sized speakers JBL towers and Klipsh center & surrounds, and powered by a 7.1 Yamaha, so I set the crossover at 60Hz.
My last 2 subs were JBLs. The subs were good, but both amps crapped out shortly after their 1yr warranty expired. Much as I love JBL gear, I knew it was time for a change. So, after doing a little web surfing, I ended up at Vanns, looking at the specs & price on the VX-11.
VX-11s amp is covered for 3 yrs, and Vanns regular price of $169, $130 off the MSRP, makes the VX-11 affordably priced, Add in the quality and performance of the VX-11, and you just cant go wrong. And if you think youre room is too big by two...theyre small!

It kind of took over the sound of my system with the subs volume only at about 1.5 out of 10. However, now, since the speaker has had a chance to break in the boominess has disappeared and now Im getting a nice tight smooth bass that integrates seamlessly into systems sound with the subs volume at 4 out of 10. As the saying goes, truly good bass is felt and not heard, Im very happy to say that now Im feeling some very musical bass. The system that Im using this Velodyne in is strictly my music system NAD pre-amp and amp and Ohm Walsh 2 speakers and Im extremely satisfied with how this sub has enhanced and complimented its performance. I cant help feeling that I got an amazing bargain by only paying 169 dollars for this sub.

Received my new Velodyne VX-11 about a week ago and immediately connected it to my home theater system. I bought the Velodyne to replace my Klipsch SW350, which I purchased less than a year ago. I was very impressed with the Klipsch, which replaced an Onkyo subwoofer, however, I felt the Klipsch was lacking the harder hitting and more impacting bass I was looking for.
Right out of the box, the Velodyne was easy to connect and the crossover frequencies were easy to adjust to blend well with my main speakers and center channel. I currently use an Onkyo receiver to power my Klipsch bookshelf speakers, center channel, and new Velodyne sub.
The bass coming from the Velodyne is amazing...it filled the void I was looking for. It hits hard and still reaches the lower frequencies more commonly heard and felt in movies. As far as volume, the Velodyne is loud!!! Ive adjusted the volume to roughly a 3 oclock position about 25 volume and this thing rocks the room when I turn up the receiver. Dont get me wrong, the Klipsch is loud as well, but after much researching and adjusting, the Klipsch was much too boomy and still didnt have the impact I was wanting. My wife has since noticed the difference and has agreed that this was a wise choice.
I am not an expert audiophile, nor do I have the funds to afford the more expensive models and series of equipment, however, I do research the good, better, and best of what is out there. Ive experienced PSB, Paradigm, Klipsch, BIC, and Mirage, and this being one of Velodynes entry-level subwoofers, I must say, rivals those at higher price points.
This subwoofer really is amazing...its loud, hits hard, reaches the lows very well, and is also very affordable. I recommend the Velodyne VX-11 subwoofer as a worthy component to any home theater.

The bass is very clean and it really adds a lot to both music and videos. My beloved reggae tracks sound more lively, classical music has much more depth, and action movies sound great! There is stereo line input but no LFE input so you need a splitter cable if you are going to feed it with the subwoofer output of your surround sound receiver. It is not too complicated. I wish I could afford one of their high end models, but the VX 11 does an exceptional job delivering smooth, powerful bass throughout the room. I felt like I was hitting the beach while watching The Pacific on Blu Ray. Vanns has exceptional customer service and product advice to meet any budget.

I bought this subwoofer to use with my Magneplanar SMGa planar speakers. The SMGas are very musical, natural, and fast sounding speakers, but are lacking in power at the low-end. Integrating a subwoofer with them is very difficult compared to a typical box speaker, and I am still struggling to get the VX-11 to sound seamless. I have my receivers crossover set to 40MHz and the VX-11 around 60MHz, which sounds the best so far, but there still seems to be a hole in the lower registers with certain types of music. I think the VX-11 is a very good product, especially for the price, but may not be the best to match with planar speakers like the SMGa.

Just completed our home theater system. The VX-11 is a perfect complement to our system. The first time we watched a blue-ray movie, my wife was amazed by the clarity of the sound. Particularly, how powerful the little sub was in the low range, i.e. explosions . The design fits any decor and the setup was a breeze. Highly recommend this product.

Though this is an entry level sub from Velodyne, for my taste - the bass reproduction is just awsome.
It has been a great addition to my prior setup of - Denon AVR-391 CF-30s Fronts.
Simply great effect for movies, and the music also has been benefited.
I think this is a great value for around $170.

I have had cheaper subs in the past and I thought I liked the boomy bass. Until i got the Velodyne VX-11 I had no idea a sub could sound so good! Music sounds great, bass drums and guitars actually sound like they should, I am no audiophile but I can tell a big difference from my oldcheaper Sony sub. Movies sound great the room shakes when its supposed too. My room is about 17x16 and I have the sub at half volume and it feels just right. It was easy to hook up, plug and play with my pioneer receiver, I am using the LFE plug with a generic RCA cable. I love this subwoofer!!!! Thanks Vanns!!

I have a great appreciation for sound fidelity, but I am not an expert. Ive had a 5.0 surround environment before adding this subwoofer to a 5.1. The difference is tremendous. The amount of realism in movies after adding the vx-11 is amazing. The level of output and frequency can be easily tuned to your preference. The bass is unobtrusive, rich and undistorted. For the money that I paid, I am very happy. Be sure to get the right cable to go with this.

I sometimes struggle with how to spend what money I have - get the better of the lesser brand, or the lesser of the better brand? Well, in this case, I chose to get the lesser of the better brand.
The VX-11 is Velodynes entry-level sub. Its a 10, ported, front-firing unit with a 100W built-in amp. Go to any AV enthusiast forum for advice and youll be laughed off the site for considering such a modestly-specd sub...but I ignored them, and Im glad I did.
In this price range, youd be hard pressed to find something better. Velodyne is a premium subwoofer manufacturer, and has been respected as such for many years. Surely they would not put their name on an inferior product. Trust me - they didnt.
Unpacking the unit, I found that it was double-boxed, packed securely with foam corners, and completely bagged. It included a power cord and an owners manual. The sub was not overly hefty, but not a lightweight either. Construction and finish are top-notch.
I connected my input cable through a y-adapter to split the signal between the subs left and right line-level inputs, though there is provision to simply plug your LFE cable into the right input only.
Once fired up, I was very impressed. This thing easily fills my 12x14 room with clean, tight, musical bass...surprisingly so given that its a ported unit. I planned to run my old sub as well for a dual-sub setup, but I promptly packed it up after hearing this one. Wont need it. In my room, and for my taste after a bunch of tweaking, the sub sounds best at just under half volume, crossed over at about 135Hz. Movies have serious impact, and music is equally impressive.
My only wish would have been some sort of feet - there are none. The bottom is as smooth as the top, and no feet were included. I plan to install carpet spikes at some point, at which time I expect its great performance to get even better.
I highly recommend this sub for anyone wanting something under $250.

For small to medium rooms, in a home theater or music set up, this sub definitely holds its own. With an economy like the one we live in, affordable, high quality subs are valuable. Velodyne is one of the leading manufacturers of sub woofers, and they live up to their reputation with this sub. I wouldnt recommend this sub for large rooms or theaters, but a pair of them could probably do the trick. Enjoy.

Vanns shipped this out real fast, when it arrived the first one had a scratchy volume control. We called Vanns and they issued a return authorization instantly, you can just print a shipping label that they email you... No cost to us.
When they received the item back, they sent us a new one right away. Excellent customer service!!!! This was my first purchase from Vanns, but will not be the last. They have earned my business!!

I am afraid this will not be the most exciting review since there is not a lot to say about a subwoofer unless you are an audio geek...I am not, I just like to listen to good stuff.
What I can say is that the speaker looks well put together, is small enough to fit in a corner nicely, and is unobtrusive.
Set up was easy...just connect the subwoofer output to the two inputs on the VX-11...you will need a Y adapter for this...plug in it and you are ready for the setup steps on your receiver.
Vanns had a very competive price and good shipping. I was well pleased with the process and time involved.

I am not a huge audiophile, but I definitiely need more than my stock speakers for everything car, home theater, computer Headphones must be from Shure or Bose, and I gotta have a subwoofer for ANY musicmovie.
Ive always bought an all-in-one home theater system because of the ease of setup and configuration. But after the 2009 Panasonic series Home theater system with the piece of crap wireless technology for the rear speakers, I got my dedicated 7.1 Channel Pioneer VSX AV receiver from home. I already had speakers for them, but I never really bothered to put in a sub since I had huge 3-way 12 Infinity speakers.
Let me say, I will never go back to those all in one systems. The bass I get from this relatively cheap sub is amazing. Ive never felt some of the bass my movies created with the old system. This little thing feels like I am at a theatre, where I can feel the tiniest rumbles, especially at the really really low frequencies.
Never really heard of the company before, but I did some general research, and the product is solid. So simple to setup, I didnt even read any manuals. Just hooked it up to the Sub pre-out, adjusted the volume and levels, and it sounds awesome. Will be a fan of their product from here on out!

Bought this from Vanns a couple of weeks ago -- I was a little concerned that my room might be too large for a 100 watt 10, but this guy proved me wrong pretty fast. Like anything else, this does have to be broken in for a week or two before it really starts getting deeper and louder, so while you shouldnt expect to have your pants blown off when you first hook it up, Ive had to turn the volume down on mine twice as the sub gets further along in the break-in process. It doesnt sound flabby like a lot of other entry-level subs do. The bass is fairly precise when watching Blu Rays and very precise and accurate just listening to music in stereo. I listen to a lot of rock and metal with double kick pedals, and this sub keeps up beautifully. Got a great deal from Vanns with free shipping and their usual customer service to go along with it. I dont think you can touch this sub in terms of the priceperformance ratio. Get one.

After several weeks of serious research and consideration, I chose the Velodyne VX-11 subwoofer for my home theater setup. Let me tell you, it is exactly what my system and my ears were lacking. If you want clear, visceral and undistorted bass that doesnt cost a fortune, get THIS one. From classical to hip-hop. From country to punk rock, the VX-11 has you covered. For movies and gaming, it is incredible. Low frequency special effects that will grab your attention without the sub being turned up very high at all. Unless of course, thats what you choose to do. But believe me, you may not need to. My subwoofer volume is currently set at 9 oclock 3rd dot of 9 until I finish breaking it in. Then I will probably dial it down to two and a half. Yes, its that good!

I bought this speaker to go with a small Klipsch surround sound theater system which I also bought at Vanns for my home office. The room is about 12 X 16. I received the Klipsch speakers first and set them up, running them off a 40 Sony Bravia TV and a Denon AVR-590 surround receiver with a Sony CD-BD player, all HDMI. The sound was very good, and as I play music that runs from classical and Jazz to 1930s hillbilly and blues, with some Rock classics from the 1960s occasionally thrown in, it really has to run the gamut. I was a little recluctant to buy the Velodyne VX-11 as it is difficult to find reviews of it on the internet. I did so, but it took some time, and I wondered why the company was not advertising it more in its literature. Was it a close-out? Had there been problems? I should not have worried. It arrived, I hooked it up and the sound was perfect for my tastes and the room size. I do not like a large, booming bass as it detracts from the overall sound in my opinion. I am a listener, not a dancer. With the VX-11, I can set it just right and even on CDs produced from old 78rpm records, a necessity given my musical tastes, there is a richness that pleasantly surprised me, and the bass is precise and crisp. The movie and TV results are equally impressive for this price range. I have several other, more expensive systems, so the point of comparison is a high one. The speaker is unobtrusive and good-looking, and easy as pie to set-up and use. The owners manual was better than average, not a huge compliment. As always in my experience, Vanns service was efficient and professional, with great value prices. Their follow-up and support have been great. I am now a lifetime customer. My only problem is that I use it so much I am not getting all that much work done at home anymore....
