Let the Bass Transport You |
Remember the extra dimension of deep, realistic bass you experienced at the movie theater or concert hall? Infinity knows how critical low frequencies are to the full enjoyment of today's high-quality multichannel digital music and movie soundtracks. The SW12 powered subwoofer delivers 500 watts worth of that same rich, clear, dynamic bass response right in your own home. This is the bass that transports you to that exciting movie scene or concert, engaging your senses, commanding attention, and truly delivering the entire experience. |
Shape the Bass to the Room |
The sound we hear at low frequencies is determined as much or more by the listening room than by the loudspeaker itself. The positioning of the speakers and the listeners, and the acoustical characteristics of the room surfaces all figure into bass quantity and quality. Except for trial-and-error repositioning of speakers and listeners, there's not much that can be done about the room's physical characteristics short of massive acoustical treatment, which would be both impractical and expensive. Equalization is the only practical answer. Infinity's Bass Optimization System is a sophisticated, yet simple-to-understand, calibration procedure that allows you to adjust the SW12's built-in parametric equalizer for the dominant low-frequency response characteristic of any room, the same way professional sound engineers do it. With Infinity, the room no longer controls the sound of the bass--you do. |
Patented CMMD Technology |
In their quest for unequaled sound, Infinity's goal is to eliminate resonances, the unwanted colorations, or distortions, of the sound reproduced by a speaker. Every transducer has its own unavoidable set of resonances based on its own physical characteristics. The trick is to build a transducer where the natural resonances are either above or below its audible range. To accomplish this, Infinity engineers invented and patented Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm (CMMD) transducer material, a sandwich made up of layers of ceramic alumina (20% of the total thickness top and bottom) anodized to a metallic aluminum core (the remaining 60% of total thickness). Among the stiffest materials known, alumina and aluminum were chosen because sound moves through them faster than through conventional transducer materials and the CMMD sandwich responds to electrical signals very rapidly without coloring the sound at all. Remember that Infinity's CMMD technology is patented (nos. 6,327,372 and 6,404,897), so when other manufacturers claim that their transducers are ceramically coated, it's merely a cosmetic surface treatment. The SW12's transducer is made with 20/60/20% alumina-aluminum sandwich material first and foremost for the sound, not just the look. |
Best-Sounding Bass Possible--Go RABOS |
While the Bass Optimization System allows you to fine tune the SW12's bass response to sound best in any particular room, some listeners don't have the ablility or inclination to adjust their speaker by ear. To get even faster and more accurate results, Infinity developed the Room Adaptive Bass Optimization System (RABOS) kit as an option (not included) for the SW12. With this self-guided kit, the user takes a series of measurements that allow the Bass Optimization System to become truly room-adaptive. The kit includes a test CD, a low-frequency sound-level meter, a "Q-Finder" to determine the width of the measured curve, and finally, a measurement template. Here's how it works: You play a series of reference tones from the test CD and record--on the measurement template--the relative output levels (using the sound-level meter) at different locations in the room. After taking the measurements, the template produces a response curve for frequencies below 100 Hz. Then you locate the largest bass peak frequency, calculate the correct attenuation, and use the Q-Finder to find the width of the curve. These are the values that are dialed into the Bass Optimization Controls on the back of the SW12. You may also log on to the RABOS Online Calculator web site, input your measurements, and have the adjustment values calculated for you. For the best-sounding bass possible in your listening room, go with the optional RABOS kit. |
