Yes, yes, of course, iPod, but . . . |
Let's say you're NOT using your iPod 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Let's say you actually own physical CDs as well as all that digital information stored in your iPod. Let's say you're nostalgic (for the 1990s). All you have to do is load your CDs into one or more attached changers and wait as your multi-zone Escient FireBall media server and ZP1 team up to fill your house with vintage entertainment options. The media server scans each CD, then connects to the Gracenote CDDB database to download information including: artist, album, song list, even the jacket cover art (remember when music had cover art? Or "covers" for that matter?). Next thing you know, you can see everything you'd ever need to know about your collection organized on screens in multiple rooms all over the house. Maybe you want to view lists of music by genre or, in order to recreate that music store (remember music stores?) experience, you can shop the whole shebang by viewing the cover art, waiting for something to catch your eye. What will definitely catch your eye is the way the FP1 provides a separate customizable graphical user interface for each room. Choose a "skin" that best suits your mood, match it to the different rooms different painted accent walls, or, heck, match it to your iPod. The choice is yours. |
With a little help from its friends (at Sony) |
Unlike some of the other multi-zone receivers designed to work in conjunction with FireBall media servers, the FP1 is more than a $500 paperweight without those more expensive counterparts — thanks to your iPod. You don't need no stinkin' media server! Thanks to the FP1, your iPod can, however, play with those fancy components when it suites you. By getting them together, you can manage as many as 2000 CDs. There is no safer, or more convenient, way to store your music collection than to archive it permanently within a carousel changer . . . or five. That is the maximum number of Sony DVP-CX777ES 400 disk DVD/CD changers that can be hooked up to the top-end Fireball media server. So — do the math — if you have over 2000 movies or CDs that you require immediate access to at the snap of your fingers, you'll need to find another system. If 2000, plus all the songs stashed on your iPod, has you covered, then you'll be happy as a clam with the expandable capacity offered by the FP1 and some further wear on your credit card. |
