Apple is constantly looking for ways to improve even their best, most popular products. Keep 'em talking

But it's also never been as easy to do so much with your photos. You can now organize your photos logically using Events to group them. Now you can also hide photos without deleting them. If you're still having trouble finding the snapshot you're looking for, you can now search your library in one place, sorting by date, keyword, name, or even rating. You can use the extra time you save by not having to look for your pictures to edit them using advanced tools to acheive just the right effect. Then, print professional-quality photos at home using colored textures, photo mattes, and borders. With all the talking people will be doing, maybe they should have included some earplugs.

Lights, camera, finished?

With the new iMovie, your movie will be finished practically before you can even say "action". iMovie '08 has been totally redesigned into a streamlined process allowing you to create fully-edited movies ready to premiere in just minutes. You can start by quickly skimming your rough footage faster than real time to get just the clips you want. Then, drag those clips to a project and arrange scenes like slides. After that, it's time to ice the cake with transitions, titles, and effects. Here comes hours of rendering, right? Wrong. You can now add or view your movies' special additions in real time. Then, when you're done, publish your movies directly to YouTube or your .Mac web gallery, or send your flick to iTunes to view on an iPod, iPhone, or Apple TV right away. It gets even better though. Let's say you realize that you need to make a quick change to one of your old movie projects. This used to mean searching for minutes through the generic "Movies" folder because you never took the time to rename or re-locate your projects. With the new iMovie, you can view all of your clips and movies instantly in iMovie, organized by Events. Finally, there is expanded format support for all the most popular formats, including AVCHD.

GarageBand's biggest addition for the '08 edition is Magic GarageBand. This new feature allows you to join a virtual band based on the styles you set up. Simply select preferences for the style of music and the individual instruments, and GarageBand will generate a song in your style that you can then play along with. This is all the fun of being in a real band without any of the fights over who has the best hair, or who's more important to the band. You can use it to create complete songs, or as a starting point to get your creative juices flowing. With Magic GarageBand. Even if you've never played a note in your life, you can write and play music like a veteran. Bring on the groupies . . .

Your ticket to the big leagues

You don't have to be a pro to sound like one! Most of the new improvements to GarageBand offer you the ability to make your music sound like it was produced at a professional studio. Only instead of spending hundreds or thousands of dollars, it's included in iLife '08 with many other features and applications for under a hundred bucks. These changes include the ability to define sections such as chorus, verse, or bridge, then copy, move, or edit your sections at will. The new version also brings with it the advantage of multi-take recording, so you can simply mark a section to repeat, record as many times as you like, then once you nail that part of the song, just pick your favorite take. Another new addition is Visual EQ, which allows you to adjust the equalization of your piece by simply dragging the EQ bands. You can also imitate a professional recording studio by automating effect and tempo changes throughout the song to let you keep things fresh by not forcing you to choose just one style throughout the entire song. For quality, you can also record high-fidelity music with 24-bit audio support. Then, when you're finally done, print out the entire sheet music for your masterpiece. The professional-quality recording and editing is perfect for sounding like a professional label without the struggle of getting signed by one.

Your web pages, your way

iWeb is another application in the iLife package that's been improved upon. With it, you can create totally custom web pages in just a few minutes. One of the new options is the availability of Apple themes. Choose one for a pre-designed layout you can customize, then add text, photos, or whatever else suits your fancy at the time. But what if you change your mind? Not to worry. You can change themes at any time with just the click of the mouse. Photo pages were also redesigned. Visitors to your site will now have access to your photo albums through a page designated specifically for them. You can now include up to 500 photos per album, allow visitors to see them full resolution, and even receive comments about your snapshots. Another improvement to iWeb is the variety of things you can put on your page. Choose anything and everything from web widgets for stocks, sports, weather, or many others, to interactive Google Maps, to Google AdSense ads (which give you credit when your friends click on them). The final option in customization is the URL. iWeb users with a .Mac account (recommended) can choose any available address for their site. These are just some of the great new improvements to iWeb.

Users with an older version of iWeb: It is highly recommended that you back up your current website files before converting them to use with iWeb '08 in case of any errors.

The Hollywood touch

The final application in iLife '08 plays host to several new innovations as well. One of the changes iDVD brings with it is the addition of ten new themes. Each one of the many themes includes a coordinated design for every screen in your DVD. Simply drag and drop your photos or movies to the drop zones, and you have a professional-quality DVD project ready to burn. And, now, your themes can be configured for either 4:3 or 16:9 screens. Your current theme isn't quite what you're looking for? With one click, you can choose any one of over 150 themes and change all of your menus. It's also equipped with more customization options than ever before. Now, you are able to make slideshows with both photos and videos, using even larger photos. And, should you approach, reach, or even exceed the capacity of the disc, iDVD will configure it with professional-quality encoding to ensure the best possible quality in the smallest amount of space.
