A leap forward for backup
The Time Capsule from Apple provides everything you'd ask for in an external hard drive and so, so, much more. With 1TB of capacity, this model stores more than nearly all hard drives out there. But most hard drives connect with a USB to a single computer and store only what is manually saved on there. That's just not how the Time Capsule operates. If you want to store files on the Time Capsule, all you have to do is go through the easy enabling process. It's as simple as flipping an on switch. After that, if you're operating a Mac computer with Leopard or Snow Leopard, Time Machine and Time Capsule do the rest for you. It will automatically back up your computer wirelessly so you never have to fear losing a document. If you don't have OS X v10.5 or later, have no fear! Older Macs or even PCs can still back up files wirelessly through the network, the only difference is that they don't back up automatically. And if you're a Mac household, every Mac with Leopard or Snow Leopard can use Time Capsule simultaneously, no go-between hard drives required. And with 1TB of space, everyone will be able to back up for a long time.
Come on, now
You didn't really think the only cool thing about Time Capsule was that it backed up automatically and wirelessly, did you? After all, this is an Apple product. Along with the hard drive functionality of time Machine, it's a full-featured AirPort Extreme Base Station. As such, it offers compatibility with the latest 802.11n draft 2.0 wireless technology as well as backwards-compatibility with 802.11a/b/g products. But we're not done yet. Products like the iPod touch or devices using 802.11b or 802.11g protocol operate on a 2.4GHz band. But today's latest computers and other products can use the faster 5GHz band. If you've got an iPhone and a new iMac, which would you choose? Faster internet for your computer, or slower internet with both devices supported? With Time Capsule, that's a choice you'll never have to make. It offers dual band support so you can use the 5GHz band with products that can use it, while still getting great internet signal on your devices which use the 2.4GHz band. And this selection happens automatically so you don't have any extensive configurations to go through to get the best signal for your device.
Tighten up your security
Maybe you're a little hesitant to use the Time Capsule as the hub of your wireless network, though. After all, if you have guests that use your wireless network, you need security. Well, not to worry. The Time Capsule offers one of the most unique security solutions. It allows you to create a guest network separate from your home network so your friends can surf the web without needing your Wi-Fi password or being able to access your total network. Still feeling a little scared about letting others on your internet connection? You can equip the guest network with a separate password while your home network will still remain safe. And of course, you can secure your home network with either 40-bit or 128-bit encryption.
Goodies galore
There are a couple more goodies bundled in with the Time Capsule to make it an even sweeter deal. First, if you have a MobileMe membership from Apple and a computer with at least Mac OS X v10.5, you can access the Time Capsule wirelessly through the internet any time to get your files from home should you need to. But there is also a USB port on the Time Capsule in case you want to hook a printer up to be shared on your home network or you need even more storage space on an external hard drive.
