Higher capacity SD cards are a result of upgrading the File Allocation Table (FAT), a data storage protocol that tracks and locates files in memory. With several different protocols from FAT12/16 to FAT32, each uses more bits to identify each cluster on the card. This makes locating files easier and allows for smaller clusters, improving the efficiency. Even if a file gets fragmented (split up into various areas in memory), the file allocation table can still track it.
