E-TTL Digital SLR Flash

Further development of Canon's flagship Speedlite has led to the production of the 580 EX II. This is the premier Speedlite for all photographers, including professionals. Newly designed to match with the EOS-1D Mark III in terms of improved dust and water resistance, body strength, and the ability to control flash functions and settings from the camera menu (EOS-1D Mark III only). Other features include improved communication reliability through its direct contacts, and recycling time is both 20% shorter than the 580EX and is completely inaudible.

Speedlite: a name you can trust

Canon's top-of-the-line Speedlite has been thoroughly revised. Again. It's still smaller and lighter than ever, and provides significantly faster recycling than Speedlite 580EX. A Select Dial makes changes, like exposure compensation, a breeze. It now covers lenses as wide as 14mm, and has new features for digital SLRs—including the ability to transmit precise flash color temperature information, and vary the zoom setting to match the imaging sensor.

Get the proper exposure every time

Canon's Speedlite employs Evaluative Through The Lens (E-TTL) flash metering. The beauty of E-TTL is that it discharges a low-power preflash from the main bulb to determine correct flash exposure. The preflash is used to calculate the proper light output needed to achieve a properly exposed subject.

Less fooling around

The preflash exposure is calculated by the camera's metering system, as opposed to being measured as a reflection off the film. This means more accurate exposure metering and less fooling caused by stray light bouncing around inside the camera.

Smart sensors

If a photograph is taken under extremely bright conditions, auto fill reduction is automatically triggered and the white light output will be diminished by approximately 2 f-stops.

Going the distance

With a standard 50mm lens, the Speedlite 580EX II has a distance range of up to 98 feet. And the assist beam covers all focus points in EOS cameras with 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 45 AF points with a distance range of two to 32.8 feet at center and two to 16.4 feet at periphery.

Choice is good

The Speedlite 580EX II can be powered using four AA batteries or with a CP-E3, dust and water resistant external power pack, or the Transistor Pack E battery packs.
