Panasonic's RPHC150S monitor headphones with noise reduction use active noise control (ANC) to reduce unwanted ambient sounds in the listening environment. ANC reduces primarily low frequency noise like that generated by airplanes, trains, buses, cars, and heating/ventillation/air conditioning systems by about 25%. ANC works by detecting sound arriving at a microphone built into the headphones and then using electronic circuitry to generate an anti-noise soundwave of the opposite polarity. The resulting destructive interference cancels out the external noise within the enclosed volume of the headphones. By keeping noise low inside the headphones, you can enjoy your music at a lower volume that's easier on your ears. ANC leaves higher frequency external noises relatively intact, so you can still hear warnings from car horns, telephones ringing, and human voices. The noise canceling function is powered by one AAA battery and an indicator light lets you know when the battery is low. If the battery is completely drained or not installed, the RPHC150S headphones work like normal headphones.
