Dreamy internet streaming
Are you in love with the convenience of streaming media, but you don't want to give up the quality a component offers? Don't throw in the towel just yet. The fine folks at Sony created their BDP-S480 Blu-ray player just for you. Built with internet video streaming capabilities, you'll have instant access to the likes of Netflix, YouTube, Vudu, Pandora, HuluPlus, and more. But you don't just have access to the Internet, any computer could do that. What makes the BDP-S480 worth it are the little extras, like Gracenote Metadata Service accessibility, I/P noise reduction, and a free media remote app to turn your iPhone, iPad or Android into a versatile remote. Yes, all those independent conveniences just landed on the mother ship of entertainment technology. Oh yeah, the S480 plays Blu-ray and it's 3D ready. Enter the future of 3D entertainment with the companion Sony BRAVIA 3D HDTV.
And the award for "Best Picture" goes to . . .
In the movie world, "picture quality" depends, largely, on the budget you throw at a film. In the digital world, picture quality depends on bit rates. For example, DVDs can deliver 10 Mbps. HDTV broadcasts can reach 19 Mbps. But Blu-ray Disc outshines them all with up to 48 Mbps! Quite simply, Blu-ray is the best home video source. Ever. At the same time, it provides seriously sweet surround sound. With up to 3 streams of audio, the BDP-S480 is an amazing experience for your ears. Blu-ray Disc can deliver concert videos and music videos that will make you want to get up on stage and sing with the performers. To put it in other terms, Blu-ray is like "Gone With the Wind," "West Side Story," "The Godfather," "Forrest Gump," "Titanic," and "Gladiator" all rolled together into one visually captivating, auditory-enthralling feast for the senses.
WiFi adapter ready: making room for your DVDs
Gone are the days of wading through the slithering mass of network cables strung out between your home theater system and your computer. Yes, three cheers to the Wi-Fi Alliance for un-tethering us from the burdensome aspect of technology, making our lives clutter free. And four cheers to Sony for making the S480 WiFi ready. All you need to connect to your wireless broadband network is a USB WiFi adapter.
What was once not even remotely possible is now a remote
Can you imagine your grandpa, 50 years ago, sitting in his La-Z-Boy, changing the channel on his tube television with the rotary dial telephone? For anyone actually alive during the age of the console t.v. and the rotary dial phone—come on, I know I'm not the only one left. I'm not even old yet!—the thought is comical. For anyone born post-1990, the idea of not using your phone for every possible daily task is inconceivable. And just when you thought every app ever possible had been created, Sony came up with one for their Blu-ray player. Their free app allows you to operate and control the S480 via your iPhone or iPod touch.
It's not the destination. It's the journey.
Unless we're talking about home entertainment, that is. Your family doesn't want to spend two hours waiting for the movie to load and two seconds watching it. That's why Sony made sure the BDP-S480 is first out of the gates with the Quick Start mode. Be prepared though, it's so quick, you might miss something.
DLNA: Because we can all get along
The BDP-S480 allows you to wirelessly stream digital photos from your PC or other Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) enabled devices to your Blu-ray Disc player. How does it work? First you need to set up a home network—wired or wireless because DLNA Certified devices today connect and communicate with each other via the network. If you're new to networking, this may sound daunting. It's not. The smart capabilities of most hardware nowadays makes set up a snap. Once you have your network established, all you need to do is connect DLNA-certified products. (DLNA-certified products are built to work together no matter which company made the product. And there are currently 60 corporations collaborating, so opportunities abound.) Now you can print photos from you t.v. or telephone, play music from a variety of devices, play movies located on your computer—the possibilities are endless. The beauty of collaboration is the freedom of choice.
Sustaining entertainment
Adding to the depth of your entertainment experience, Gracenote Metadata Service gives you access to detailed information about the movies you're watching. There's even a cross search functionality that allows you to easily search select BRAVIA Internet Video partners for entertainment and information related to the disc that you're watching.
Redefining high definition—just add 3D
See and hear a whole new dimension in High Definition with Sony's BDPS480. With the advent of new 3D TV, Sony adds 3D technology to their Blu-ray Disc player. And the crystalline clarity of 1080p Blu-ray Disc movies, Blu-ray 3D media, and DVD upscaling that can bring your DVDs to the highest possible quality, means your favorite movies have never looked or sounded so good. Featuring Full HD 1080p video output, you can take full advantage of your HDTV and the unparalleled detail of Blu-ray Disc video content. Plus, this player upscales your existing DVD collection to near HD quality via HDMI. Finally, with WiFi-ready functionality, you can connect to the Internet to download and stream BD-Live content such as additional scenes, shorts, trailers, and more.
