While DVD technology uses a wide red laser to encode and read information on an optical disc, Blu-ray Disc technology uses a much narrower, blue-violet laser. Because the Blu-ray laser is so much finer than the DVD laser, it is able to encode significantly more information in the same space as DVD. And by "significantly more information" we mean five times as much! Consequently, Blu-ray Disc media are capable of storing both Full HD 1080p video and lossless, 7.1-channel studio-quality surround sound audio. And, guess what? There's still room left over for a variety of bonus materials like deleted scenes and director commentary. And thanks to its advanced HDMI output, the DV-BD507 lets you send both the HD video and audio to your receiver via a single cable. While the DV-BD507 outputs Full HD 1080p video, its bitstream 7.1-channel audio output must be sent to a Dolby TrueHD or dts-HD Master Audio-enabled receiver for full decoding.

Your incoming media content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, and with that in mind, HDMI systems automatically configure to display that content in the most effective format. Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device.
